My first article, i hope it helps.
Why are fangames seen a bad games?
For a long time fangames have be known to be some of the worst games in the community, I think i know a few reasons why they have this stereotype.
First of all most fangames are rubbish, its sad but true. Nowadays i simply don't download most games with mario or sonic in the title. It is because a person (newbie)that buys a click product wants to instantly create a game that they played and loved in the 16 bit era. They will churn out a game using libs from the internet thinking that because they got it working, its a great achievement compared to what they would have been able to do with a programming language, sadly they get told otherwise in the comments section. A fangame won't be as good as the original game unless the maker works VERY hard to do so, Click products are great for making games quickly but a fan is still going to take a while to get anywhere near the same quality.
What can anyone do to make a good fangame
It is possible to create a Good fangame. Of course it is, Mario is only a platform game with some boxes and coins, Sonic the hedgehog is only a platformer thats very fast with some rings and loops.
Okay there is more to them than that.
First off the graphics that is ripped needs to be ripped well. A fan of a mario game for instance will have played the game so much they will see a slight inperfection on the animations. Getting those hot spots just right can help. Mixing original with ripped isnt easy either so its not recommended.
Secondly, the level design shouldnt be rushed. Having the right graphics isnt nearly as important as having a good level design, Don't make collectables impossible to reach, don't make it flat if the real game has loads of platforms, Basically try to keep the level design similar to the original because that helps the gameplay stay faithful too.
Third, the music. I know that its very easy to download midis of music from tons of games from www.vgmusic.com, ive got loads of midis myself but please don't use them in your game! One or two can be passable since nintedo remix the same mario tune in most games but using game music isnt always a good idea just because it's good music. Ive heard tons of final fantasy music in all kinds of games and to me final fantasy music fits the game it was made for and NOTHING ELSE!
I know its hard to get music that suits a game but is not used, i don't make my own music i download Modules from www.modarchive.com and use those in my games, i have about 300 to choose from.
Lastly but probably most importantly, try to keep the gameplay similar. We don't want to play a fangame that plays differently, A mario fangame where mario can't jump on enemies won't be liked, or a game where the character jump twice as high as they would normally, this puts off the player instantly because they wanted to relive the experience they had origianlly.
So think to yourself, what made this game so great in the first place? mabye playing it again to refresh your memory will inspire you to make a better game, who knows.
What did you think for my first article?
