Original Ideas VS. Original Content.
Which Is Better?
I hear klikers say all the time that ripping graphics is a disgrace to the klik community. I'm not certain which is worse though, ripping graphics and creating an original story line to keep people interested, or stealing the main idea or theme of a game from another game and making your own graphics. Sure, the second idea is fine if being used in the context of a puzzle game but if someone is making a zelda game, I want to see true zelda graphics, not character design that look only remotely better than stick figures and horrible environments. Of course, a game that had ripped graphics and followed the same story line as another game in the official lineage would be the worst possible game creation outcome.
Original Ideas:
If you're like me and can't create "AWESOME" looking sprites but can code and write story line like nobody's business, what are you left with but sitting on your hands if you aren't in a production team? You can't make games that people are going to applaud you for, so what's the point? My point is making games I like. If that means making sequel or prequel fan games then that's what I'll do. I can tell you what I won't do under those circumstances. I won't be making my own graphics. If I'm making a prequel to Chrono Trigger, I want it to look and feel like a prequel to Chrono Trigger and not some messed up looking game with horrid sprites and environments with a great story line. Many of you may be thinking "You rip sprites? That's horrid! I hate you!". Well, I'd like to validate that by saying that if you'd rather see a zelda game I make have stick figure characters then keep on complaining.
Original Content:
Let's say you DID keep complaining about my infatuation with ripping and I DID start making games with stick figure characters and horrible looking environments. Would that be better? I don't think so. A game may have a wonderfully indulging story line, but unless the graphics are meant to be a joke, a game with such graphics caliber would simply ruin the over-all experience of the game itself.
Conclusion.
I believe original ideas are more important in a game than original content. Understand, I am in no way telling people to go out and start ripping graphics because it is a bad idea that should only be left as an open option to those who have no graphics talent. I would also like to say that I can create my own original graphics and I have before... and they are more detailed than stick figures and 6 pixel quick backdrops. It's simply that my graphics capabilities pale in comparison to other klikers. Anyway, I think that should just about bring this commentary to an end. Peace out
