With some friendly sugjestions from others. I decided to make a better artical on the same matter. So i give you...
___10 things to help open areas and big landscapes less repetative and boaring___
#1 WIND.
Say you wanted to make a big open grass feild or feild with trees with a steady wind blowing acrosst it. One thing to do would be to make the trees and flowers blow in the wind. It may be hard to do with trees but the slower the wind the less the tree moves. so if you wanted a slow wind you would make only one or two patches of leavs thrust to one side. Fowers would be easyer yet they would have a very diferent movment. Not only would they blow to one side but they would have a recoil in which it would come back and not come straigh back and upright. Also with anything blowing in the wind, It would have a very fluid motion, so the more frames the better. Apart from things that stay in one place like trees and flowers, You could add leafes. I would use a ball movment and an animation where it kind of rolls in a circal. Its movment would speed up than slow down, but it would stop once in a while. so it would need a moving and stoped animation. Leafes would need a very fluid motion to so no sudden stops or starts, yet i would make them start faster than they stop. Also another thing about wind is that every thing would be moving in the same direction. so i would have it that once the leafes leave the frame to wrap around the playing feild in all directions. and have them evory 1 or 2 seconds bounce in one direction or 5 directions but 5 of the 32 directions such as direction 7,8,9,10,and 11. And if you can think of a better movment for them than you do it. Also a windmill might not be a bad idea.
#2 RAIN
You may think making rain is easy. And your probibly right. But I want to state the sifferent ways to do it. One way would be the 32x32 or 64x64 object with 4 or 5 frames of a few raindrops falling. One thing that it should have is straight lines as raindrops. and have them at a slight angal. And its color should be some sort of blue. You could also have it semitransparent if you want. Another way of doing rain isn't to have raindrops but little splashes on the ground all over. this way I think would be easyer. if you wanted you could have falling rain and rain hitting the ground. Also good sound effects are a must. but getting it to be evorywhere on a map is a thing to think about. you could have it follow the screen by unselecting follow the playing feild in its object prefrences. or just cover the entier frame with them... I woulent sugjest doing. another thing to do when you have rain is have puddles or have bodyes of water make circular ripples all over.
3# SNOW
I find it hard to make just flat snow fovered ground. i never know if it should be plain white or have some darker spots to make it look like it has texture. but once I'm done with that its easy. I take the trees from earlyer in the game and cover them in snow. which isn't too hard. also have snow covered bushes and roofs. and anything that has a surfase. to make falling snow i would make the same as thr rain. only slower and not have a hitting the ground animation. also the snow flaces dont have to go in sutch a straight line down. They could move from left to right slowly, thats realy up to you how mutch it mover. Or it it were snowing and windy the snow would be getting blown to the sive wery fasy and at much more of an angal. it also can be semitransparent if you want. now that i think of it the ground should be slightly darker or darker in some areas so you can see the falling snow. also you could have your player leave foot prints in the snow. you can figur out how to do that thers so many diferent ways of leaving tracks. And last of all have all ponds and none moving water be frozen.
4# CLOUDS
Couds are very simple. you could add clouds to your game. they could be clouds or the shaddows of clouds. just make a few semitransparent black cloud chape slowly drift over the land. or sevral. And thats it for clouds. although if there were a very high mountain you could add some white clouds near the middle of the mountain. Or fog!. just make some white semitransparent flat and stringy shaped objects slowly drift lefy and right in a swamp.
#5 ANIMALS
Another thing to have in big areas are animals or insects. an example of this in harvest moon 64. animals all over the place in the woods. I'v made a few small insects and animals in my games. you could have them run away or follow you or you could hunt the bigger ones and eat them. you think of somthing.
#6 WATER
sparkaling water. what i would do is make a plain blue or blue with blotches of darker or lighter blue backdrop with a sparkaling object thats just a few sets of pixles side by side. and have frames where there in different spots. but what i would do instead of just going from one frame to the next and have them just random as heck. i'd make them fade away and fade in. just use lighter and darker colores.
#7 RANDOM THINGS
Have some random things like a fallen tree or a patch of mushrooms. or a broken abandoned caredg. or whatever you can think of.
#8 INTERACTIVE RANDOM THINGS
Have a tree you can pick friut from. or that patch or mushrooms you can pick up and use. Or a pond you can throw things into, or a tree you can knok things out of. think of things for yourself.
#9 BEACHES AND SAND
sand is prutty easy to make. you make sand becaus thars no one way to make sand. As in the snow. You could have your player make footprints in the sand. As for the ocean I think the best kind of ocean is just a tide that rolles in and rolles out with a thick white edge.
#10 WALKWAYS AND PATHES
The kind of walkways you havein your game are endless. you could have a dirt path or stone path, uncommon woodden path, the golden street, the brick road, You could have them surrounded by fence or a row of stones. And think of it logicaly, such as if thers two towns and theyr both made of wood and white mudd walls and have straw roofs and dirt streets but the road conecting the two towns is made of stone. people might see a problem with that. unless it hase a story behind it.
one more quike note. Diversity between things is a good idea. like having more than one kind of tree. or to make 2 or 3 different sizes or shapes of tree. Also you could do this with flowers and bushes.
and sorry for the spelling. i know its wrong. But it was a really long artical to write for me. tell me what you think.
