Hey guys. I made a chip tune a while back, and I decided I wanted to share it with you guys. I hope you like it.

better than I can do. For it to be appropriate you should convert it to the NES sound format ^^

You can NOW actually get a codec for the NES format of sound to play in a media player

As far as composition goes, I quite like it, especially the part in the last third. It sounds retro, although I have to say, it doesn't sound very NES-like in particular. For a REAL NES tribute, you'd probably want to read up on the technical aspects of the NES's sound capabilities.

Very nice. Sounds like a perfect dungeon theme. But yesh, like Nim said, it doesn't sound very NES.

What software did you use?

you're right about it not sounding very NES like, i can see that. I used a program called Impulse Tracker to make it with.

The drum samples are from a keyboard I got when i was a kid, which i recorded and used (that was before this tune) and then decided to use them here.

in your song the samples seems to have a short release when a new note is played, that uses automatically more channels, therefore I think you exceed the channel limits of the NES

Impulse Tracker? That ancient DOS program that invented the IT sound format?

You know, there's something around called Modplug Tracker now. Windows-based, and can do everything modules can, plus a bit more. Or MilkyTracker if you don't like MPT.

Sorry, I'll listen to the actual song later.

I don't think that's good advice. Just because it's Windows-based doesn't make it any more useful. As far as I know, for creating .it files Modplug Tracker is no better at the job than Impulse Tracker. Just stick with the interface that you're already used to.

1) Well to be honest i used a modern windows close called Schism Tracker. I use it because i find IT to be the fastest tracker out there (in terms of how fast i can get from idea to song), because i know all shortcuts in and out etc.

2) i tried modplug, and while i'm sure it can do nifty stuff, it seems chunky and i really don't like the way it works

3) Also, i realize you're all right about it not sounding NES Like, but does it have to, in order to be a tribute ?

Yeah, it's not really retro, it's more like neo-retro. Doing new stuff out of old concepts and styles. 'S nice.

Re: 3)
You're right. You can write whatever song you like and call it a NES tribute. As long as music is still considered "art", no one can tell you what is or isn't a worthy tribute because it's subjective. You could mash together Celine Dion and a totally rocking bagpipe solo and call it a NES tribute, if you like. The thing is, if your console tribute song neither sounds like the console or is based on any song ever heard on it then you can't be surprised when people start wondering why.

Anyway, it's a nice retro song I like the percussion work. As axel said, it would be perfect for a dungeon theme.
