Why was the "create-games" added to the thumbnails? Were people hotlinking them or something?

Its just on jpgs and pngs, due to gif licencing rubbish, there are no thumbnails for those, just the full image scaled down

You can't put watermarks on gif. files because of licensing issues? How does that work? Surely the person who created the image owns it regardless of format?

What if you convert it to png then downscale it?
