i posted this as a second half to a recent post in the C++ topic but got no input so im starting its own thread.

would it be worth it to buy visual studio 2008 pro? its like a 700$ purchase but my school for some reason is selling the discs and key for 130$. usually a used copy (no box or documentation, just a disc sleeve with the product key on it) with student discount so that accounts for the super low price. ive grown to love msv but does anyone know whats so much better about professional then express? one is free and the other is almost a $$grand.

my main questions is what the actual differences are. what makes the paid software better? or worth buying?

Uh, what does it do again? I dunno.. I find a lot of open source software to be just as good or better than their expensive equivalents. For example, Microsoft Project. Killer price, but there's plenty of other good cheap alternatives. Same goes for MS Word, most C++ compilers, pixel art tools, etc.

Google it first before you buy

microsoft visual studio is an IDE suite.

c++ , c# , visual Basic, Web Developer, SQL server.

there is the free "express" version that i currently use and develop most of my windows applications in, but there is also a retail version, standard and professional. standard is about 300$ retail and online, and professional ranges from 500$ to 1000$ online and generally 700$ retail. since i'd be buying it through my university, they get discs and keys, and sell them for "academic use" only, which is basically just "since you pay tuition you get a discount for buying from us" and its 129$. thats already over a 500$ discount. but i dont know any of the differences from the express version that would even make it worth my 130$

i looked online like wikipedia and it lists features that are taken out in the express versions but i have no idea what they even are .

also i the retail contains mfc and atl headers. those are the only reason i could think of buying it for.

im going to buy it at the end of the week when i recieve my paycheck i just want to justify spending the money

Meh, I never really use any of the "extra" features in software anyway. Marketers often use it as a trick to get people to believe they'll get more from the dumber customers by giving a tiny extra. Not that MMF2 Pro is anything like that

Yeah, I guess you should go for it if you plan to use it in the future.
