Have you ever looked back on one of your first games and the only word that came to your mind was "Suckish"?

Why not redo one? Overhaul an old game! Get rid of the pre-fab graphics, the miserable bugs, and port it to MMF2 or TGF2 (Lol and have even MORE bugs to deal with. ).

The rules apply:

-You may submit only one redone game, but you must also submit the original game.
-You cannot keep any pre-fab graphics. All must be replaced or deleted.
-You may moderately alter the gameplay.
-You may change the sounds and music.
-You may moderately change the storyline.
-You may redo original graphics.
-You may not change the plotline.

Scoring:

Scoring will be determined by how much each catergory has been altered, for better or for worse, since the remake.

The catergories:

-Graphics
-Sounds/music
-Storyline
-Gameplay
-Overall

Time limit: you have 2 official weeks to complete the redo. The compo starts on May 12, but you can start the redo before that date. Not only does this give you a little over a week to get ahead, and technically 3 weeks to complete the redo, but also sign up.

The compo ends May 26; good luck to all participants!

(Credit goes to Tomatokid, who gave me this idea. )

Haha, this is a good idea. If Splotches were close enough to completion I'd enter it. But of course that would be unfair since I started remaking it long ago. W3r3w00f, rules addendum suggestion: Redo's must be started today at the earliest, it cannot be an old redo project.

I have a billion games I want to remake, but my art is pretty bad and I should use my non-homework time for Splotches. Good luck and have fun everyone!

Do I have to remake my own game, because I've always wanted to remake Tops the Pig. Also, the only games I ever completed were wiped away with my second computer (this is my fourth).

I can't wait to see what It looks like.
I've drawn a new Tops sprite and redone some of the enemies and general objects. Now I'm wondering if I should add new features to the game or keep it simple.
I might make him actually have a proper punch instead of no attack that advances to throwing lethal gloves.

Awesome!

Hey everybody, Because I am probably the world's slowest coder (I do plan to throw in my entry for fun) I'm extending the compo time to June 9, which gives all of you two more weeks to work on larger sized projects or fine tune your redo. Also, you now have until May 19 to enter the compo. Please, though- don't wait until the last minute!

Rules update

With permission from the author, users may redo other Klik games.

I used to churn out my early games in a week or two. So it shouldn't take too long to do a remake. Although I'm putting more effort into it than I would have back in 2001.

Actually at the moment I'm still not sure which of the games to remake.

I don't see what the problem is really. Surely you don't need to have the source to remake your game. If you're going to improve it you may as well make it from scratch.

Nope- I personally hate commenting and grouping. I might do it, but very rarely. (Besides, I thought we were watching the intro?)

@Mkingy: You can still remake someone else's game if you can't find the sources.

@AndyUK: Yep, Started from scratch. it was way easier anyway.

Just so we're clear, do we need to submit just the original game or the source to the original? And do we need to submit the source for the remake too?
And can we submit the remake as a TDC download?

So it doesn't matter that you're nto going to be able to play the origianl due to it not actually existing anymore... how do you plan to judge how much it's improved Might remake anyway, I'll see how my exam revision progresses.

Sorry I haven't been getting to you guys' questions sooner. Abit busy lately.

"Just so we're clear, do we need to submit just the original game or the source to the original? And do we need to submit the source for the remake too?
And can we submit the remake as a TDC download? "

You only need to submit the original game. As for downloads, if you wish you may submit the download, or you may post it here. Either way works fine.

"So it doesn't matter that you're nto going to be able to play the origianl due to it not actually existing anymore... how do you plan to judge how much it's improved Might remake anyway, I'll see how my exam revision progresses."

You have to post both versions of the game. The original game MUST NOT have a broken link. However, if it does, (if you can) post it here.

As for judging on improvment, the three judges will judge the first game and rate each catergory. Then they'll rate the remake. E.g: Someone judged the original game and the results were...

Graphics: 4/20
Sounds/Music: 5/20
Storyline: 7/20
Gameplay: 5/20
Overall: 5/20

Now I rate the original and the results are...

Graphics: 14/20
Sounds/Music:13/20
Storyline: 12/20
Gameplay: 12/20
Overall: 13/20

Now we minus the original's scores from the redo's scores, and then we add the remainder to the total points. Here's an example.

Graphics: 14/20 - 4/20 = 10 points (14 - 4 = 10)
Sounds/Music: 13/20 - 5/20 = 8 points (13 - 5 = 8 )
Storyline: 12/20 - 7/20 = 5 points (12 - 7 = 5)
Gameplay: 12/20 - 5/20 = 7 points (12 - 5 = 7)
Overall: 13/20 - 5/20 = 8 points (13 - 5 = 8 )

Add them all up and you get 38 points total from that judge. After the two other judges have scored the game, the game with the most points wins.

Good luck to all participants!

If anyone wants to help out with the graphics that is

I could help with them. I'm not the best, but I'm not necessarily bad at it. I'll download the original tomorrow if I can and see what I can do.

(And hey, if someone else offers, I can just be the backup graphics guy.)

This is a refreshing compo! I've been looking for an excuse to jump back into my game-making saddle; this seems like a great way to do it.

I'm one of those folks who lost their original source files for the game they're interested in remaking. My choice is "Spirit Seeker," my first effort, and a game which actually won the GOTW upon release.

Here's the player's sprite; it pretty much stayed at this position for the entire game.

Image

I worked for a little bit this evening, and I'm happy with the new sprite; this is the player, facing to the right, and stationary.

Image

I intend to make separate directions for both moving and stationary player positions. There will also be some special visual effects surrounding the player, depending on their actions. Although I'm no pro coder, I've learned a lot since the release of Spirit Seeker, and nowadays I have more than just enthusiasm to back up my vision.

I'll make no guarantees, but I still would like to challenge myself to finish a remake of this old game of mine.

i made a game a long time ago, i made a menü screen, some intro and an engine. but all of them sux ;>
there was an earlier version of this game, which was playalbe, and more suxxy, but i can not find that. ;*-C

"is that a problem, if the original game is not finished (not playable)? actually, just an engine?"

That could negate the Gameplay catergory, so I think engines should be left out.

However, I think that redoing unfinished game could be allowed- the redo could be the complete version of it.

I hesitate doing this, but just for the sake of longer games (Plus me being on constant slo-mo) I'm extending the compo to the end of June, 6/30/09, Tuesday!

I hope this gives everyone plenty of time to finish their games.

Glad to hear it, Hayo! Having an awesome time too.

@AndyUK: Try starting with basic attacks, such as an uppercut. But in your case, we'll go with a punch. Animating is a pain in the arse for me, but quickly getting it over with makes everything go down the drain. Imo the best way to get a good animation is to have a guideline on doing them, which makes you more confident. The guideline is to act out the actions (If possible) yourself and study the movement of each of your limbs and then put it into frames. This is how I learned walking animations.

Good luck everybody!

I am starting to wonder why I am redoing all old levels. If I make new levels and some new enemies I can call it Fishhead 4. Maybe I will redo all FH2 and FH3 levels with extra stuff and then make 13 more levels. That would make a 60 level Fishhead game.

yep my remake of the original MrPineapple from which i derived my internet name is coming along!it's almost unrecognisable now (in a good way). as you may have heard it now involves interesting things (to me) like the PMO and by the way andy, i sorted that bug... it only took me 2 solid days

it occurred to me earlier, i released the first version of this in 1999.... 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY EDITION!

Ive said this god knows how many times on this site. Yes, it's possible to control lots of enemies with PMO, Nifflas made a good example a while back:

Yeah, that works well, I've checked it out before now. But I've found an easy way to make enemys follow you around if you add actives indicating it to jump.

Lol tried that with the PMO and the enemy couldn't stop following me and caught up at twice my speed. it was annoying and I only wished I had made his death animation sooner.

Yep, got rid the coding cause his movement wasn't the best tbh and I just decided to leave him there as an active until I find an AI coder.

I was going to redo Deth but using dual analogues but then I realised most people probably don't have 360 or whatever controllers hooked up. And the gameplay would be hella different so it's probably illegal.

Btw everybody, There was a storm here maybe 30 minutes ago so I had to unplug my computer. I turned it back on and I couldn't load my mfa file! I was mad like fire.

BUT! I managed to open a file as and Mfa and I got the file back!

Lesson learned: Make plenty of back-ups. (Should've learned sooner. ) Everybody who hasn't made backups, start now!

Hmm, my "next gen" game is almost done, but I don't have the original game I'm making it from because I never uploaded it online and my old computer flooded in Katrina. BUT the original was a clone of another game that came with KnP, so can I just use that as the bases for the next gen version?

The deadline is June 30th; 6 weeks to complete your game.

"Do I need to put anything special in the title?"

If you mean the game title, just put "Next gen" in parenthesis. Or you could put it in the description.

"Also, I can't seem to find the old condition red sample game."

If you still have it uploaded to the site and the link isn't broken, then it's alright. Otherwise, you may not be able to compete. but hey, I'll give you 50 points just for your interest if you can't compete.

I'm realizing now that there may be more added features in my game than I expected (the original was fairly stark in terms of gameplay), and this may be a factor in qualifying my next-gen remake...but I can't turn back now.

My schedule for June is packed with all sorts of other tasks and projects, so I'm doing my best to finish Spirit Seeker '09 early this week. Again, I'm well aware that some of the new functionality will add significantly to the gameplay; I'll totally understand if the new version isn't admitted.

Okay, so it's pretty clear I'm not going to finish this on time. I'm currently training for a bicycle fundraiser this coming weekend; I've two shows with the band before the end of the month; I just came back from a week in the mountains and I'm still recovering; and I have to move to a new house at the beginning of July. It's just so far down on the list of things to be done at the moment.

I'll have to come back to this later in the summer/year. Sorry I can't fully participate; thanks again to W3R3W00F for bringing this contest to the forefront...it's been a lot of fun! This remake WILL be completed eventually, as things are looking pretty good--particularly when compared to the original.

Here's an URL to the old version:

http://www.let-off.com/software/spirit_seeker.zip

Here's an URL to the INCOMPLETE do-over version:

http://www.let-off.com/software/seeker_redo.exe

NOTES: you are the fellow in the purple cape. Move over the spirits (the glowing yellow things or the orange squares...I did mention this was incomplete, right? ) to collect them. They will grant you 2, 4, or 6 points (the orange squares give you the most). AVOID the moving grey things, including dark clouds and an evil-looking horned torso creature (though at this point, the torso creature does not subtract from your life points).

When you have points, you can press Button 1 to convert one point into energy and launch a magic projectile either up, down, right, or left, depending on the direction you're facing. Shoot the grey clouds to destroy them; shoot the pillars many times to destroy them (the object of the game will be to destroy five pillars).

After you've collected 100 points from the spirits, your mentor will begin glowing at the bottom of the screen. Touch him to receive 20 additional life points. You have to constantly keep collecting spirits, because even if you avoid the evil creatures, your fatigue gets the best of you and lowers your life.

GAMEPLAY: 80% complete
GRAPHICS: 70% complete
PRESENTATION: 30% complete
SOUND: 10% complete

Me too. Please let me join. I was making a remake of my old game, Spellcaster. I never released it being buggy as it was. I am a little confused about what you wrote. You can alter the storyline, but now the plot? What's the difference? Also I want to add a semi-turn-based battle system to my platformer. Is that moderate enough of a change?

Alright, when the NEXT Next gen compo starts you'll both be pre-signed up.

DMT: Plot and Storyline can be abit confusing, but they're entirely two different things.

The plot is basically the underlining, aim, or point of the book, movie, game, or the like. (e.g: Tim is a young boy who isn't generally too bright. Tim has many disfunctional, and sometimes disasterous adventures that teach him that he learns something new everyday, through the stupidity of his nature.)

The Storyline is a collection of events that take place in a specific order within a book, movie, game, or the like. (e.g: Jack went outside, Jack swung on his treeswing, Jack went back inside.)

In summary, you can change some of the events that happen throughout your game, but you can't change the underlining, aim, or point of your game. I hoped this helped.

It did. thank you for your help. But I'm still not sure whether to enter because my game REALLY sucked. It was the first game i attempted but it had terrible and/or library used graphics, loads of glitches and sub-par gameplay. I cannot believe i made such a game. And because it would rate so low, I believe that I have an unfair advantage.

Glad I could help.

I wouldn't say it really matters advantage wise, because most of or all of our first games had bugs, pre-fab graphics, mix-match stuff. Besides, it makes you feel great when you compare the new to the old, because you know that your remake is loads better. It's like making amends for a past fault, only fun. By all means feel free of conditions to enter.

Edit: Grammer mishap. oO

@ DMT, the ideas for the game can't be terrible though, it's the execution that they are aiming to better in the competition. Even if it was a really basic idea, it can always be improved with graphics update, less bugs, better gameplay and controls etc. And sounds/music.

As it turns out, after giving blood I don't like doing much other than sitting in my room with the air conditioning on full blast.

What this means is, in a bizarre twist of fate, it looks as though Spirit Seeker '09 will be completed this week...! Just a little more sound design, and I believe it will be playable and done to my current satisfaction.

Next remake (or perhaps the next game I finish?) will include cut-scenes and an online scoreboard...But for now those will have to wait.

Hmm, sounds interesting, i may just have a crack at it.

I've been wanting to make a Jambuster 2, sequel my old junk game Jambuster, for a while. However Jambuster 2 requires the making of masses of graphics and will be an entirely new game. Sooo for the competiton i'll instead rework the original Jambuster into "Jambuster EX" or something and improve the gameplay slightly but leave the rest as it is .

Also I'll never finish on time.

Well if you want to start somethin else, it's cool with me- it's your call.

I know, the compo seems abit constrained and all, but if you want to just submit whatever you've got, or save your remake for the second NGC that's cool too.

You know, I thought about that this morning. I was like "Seeing as AndyUK's remake isn't much like Tops 3 according to him, and it's got all this cool stuff, and he's obviously a much better programmer now than he was when he made the original, and Chris Street obviously wants Tops 4, and who doesn't want Tops 4, maybe he ought to just make a new game."

Go for it.

Hmm, this remaking business is fun! Re-doing a game from when i used to pump out games every week is cool too, spending more time over the graphics and that . The title screen in the old version had a few strings and a button object, now it has a cool logo, a stylised car and a keyboard-controlled menu. Oh and as it's a driving game it has a V8 firing-up sound effect when you start it.

Pardon me for this update, but to give the judges time to rate the games I will extend the compo's end to July 18th. That's 4 days for the judges to give their ratings.

Do you have to just rate? Or do reviews and that's taking forever

I'm gonna need more time anyway, I'll be done on the twenty at least, I just hope I don't have to keep doing these reviews then

I think in one of the PMs I sent to all the judges said you didn't have to do reviews but you DO have to rate. So no, you don't have to review if you don't want to, but if you do you may take as much time as you need.

Unfortunately our judges aren't finished with judging yet so, as much as I already digress from a standing deadline, I will give the judges one more week or less to finish their scores/reviews.

I apoligize to everyone. This went alot longer than I thought.

I think judges should be given decent time to play the games and rate/score and review them (if they wish), because everyone's still got their own personal lives to be busy with school, work, etc.

Lordy! I've decided for THE last time to extend it to August 1. Because of broken links, failed downloads, incompatibility, and other henious obstacles, not all of the judges still aren't done yet, so we'll see if these extra days give them some more time.

Alright, this is the end of NGC 1! Unfortunately, only 2 judges finished their reviews in time, however all judges will be recieve 500 points for their participation as a judge.

Unfortunately Tops the pig remake could not be judged because the judges couldn't open it even after multiple tries for whatever reason. Nonetheless, all participants recieve 250 points for their tries.

With that, time for the Scorings from the judges!

Spirit Seeker

Original
Graphics:13/20
Sounds/Music:15/20
Storyline:2/20
Gameplay:9/20

Graphics: The graphics are okay, but they are extremely unpolished. More shading would've helped a lot, plus the tiled pillars don't help it...

Sound/Music: Actually not that bad, about in the middle quality, only a bit better. The sound effects are good, and I kinda like the retro sound to the music.

Storyline: What Storyline?

Gameplay: Just basic and without any challenge... Walk all over the place and get spirits, lose some, touch this magey dude. It can go on forever it feels like. It gets really repetitive after a while.

Remake
Graphics:18/20
Sounds/Music:17/20
Storyline:8/20
Gameplay:14/20

Graphics: The graphics are fairly decent. What seperates these from many I see, is that it seems like s-m-r didn't try to make the character with defining characteristics. Actually, he doesn't even have a face! But it still all looks good, mainly because by not doing these I believe he was able to focus on more important parts about the characters and enviroments.

Sounds/Music: The Music is okay. I wish it looped from frame to frame, it seems a little noobish without doing this. It's fairly setting. Kinda sounds like the stuff in the old fantasy movies like Sinbad. So, generally fairly good in the music compartment, and the sound effects are okay too.

Storyline: I barely remember it if that says anything. Something about Wizards and such. Okay for an arcade I have to admit. Hey, beat the snot out of Donkey Kongs storyline! It's not terrible, but not very good either.

Gameplay: It's kind of a cat and mouse game. You play the mouse, and the dark spirits are the cats. The cheese is the yellow spirits. You need to collect a bunch of the yelllow spirits and give them to your wizard mentor. IT repeats this format. Eventually it gets fairly challenging as the grey spirits get large in numbers.

Overall: It's not a bad game, but I didn't get much enjoyment from it. I trust it was much better than the original. Wish I could have played it. It's an arcade game, like it's supposed to be. Nothing more unfortunately.

Overall score: 18

Mr. Pineapple (Demo)
by Mr. Pineapple

Original
Graphics:2/20
Sounds/Music:18/20
Storyline:1/20
Gameplay:6/20

Graphics: Uh... Not the greatest. A little too much pencil artwork for my taste... Some of the worst I've seen... Some are ripped from Zeb, some are original.

Sound/Music: Actually, even though it has no sound effects, it has great tunes! So it deserves a great 18/20.

Storyline: What Storyline?

Gameplay: Very glitchy! Talk about a bug fest! Default movement anybody? You're on a quest to get to this green bar thingy.

Overall: Uh.. I don't think I've seen much worse... But you know, there is a huge increase in the remake.

Remake
Graphics:12/20
Sounds/Music:20/20
Storyline:4/20
Gameplay:19/20

Graphics: Not that great, a little mismatched feeling. But that added to the grooviness of the game! Still not terrible, I likey... I enjoyed some of the effects though. Especially during the one level where the sun's brightness actually changes with the level's pieces blocking it. But still, coulda been better.

Sound/Music: GREAT Music! It's not hard to see why Dr. James chose Piney to do music for Tormishire. The tunes are great and very fitting. The sound effects are good too.

Storyline: The only bit of Storyline I found was from the read me, and it helped some. I like the story, but it won't be the game's strength no matter what.

Gameplay: Fun, fun, fun, fun... Very fun game, pretty challenging too. I couldn't help but play to the last level. The greatest feature is the fact you can pick up weapons! I got about two bazooka's throughout the whole game, and I had a blast with them! I couldn't beat the boss though... Maybe Mr. Pineapple should make him easier.

Overall: Good. Actually, Great! A literally HUGE improvement on the original. It's a little unpolished, and still unfinished. The tunes are great, and the gameplay is quite good. I'm waiting for this one to get done.

Well done Piney apples man.
It's a shame about not being able to play the old Tops 2. Surely not all the judges failed to open it? I can run it fine on my laptop with Windows XP 32-bit.

I wish I could have worked faster on my failed entry. I only decided to change from a remake to a sequel based on how damn little I had done in the time available.

Congrats to my fellow entrants, and thanks very much for the 2nd place award! I also think Mr. Pineapple showed leagues of improvement over the original, and that's an undisputed win across the board. Thanks also goes to the judges for reviewing and scoring so gently.

Also, I wanted to compliment the judging/scoring system. It's designed to award those who have shown improvement over time, and reflects the true nature of the contest itself. ωξяξW○○F, well done!

The scoring was good, except I felt like if your original game was good, it didn't matter on the quality of your new game as much. I think they're should be a bonus category representing 50 points instead of 20, for your improvement level, that would be the only thing I would change
