DC Official E3 2009 Thread! Yay!

No threads for E3 2009? Is nobody excited or something? (I sure am!)
As always the big deal about E3 is usual the conferences/briefings from the big three: Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo.

Microsoft Briefing
Monday June 1st, 10:30am PDT (6:30pm BST)
Approx. 95 minutes in length

Nintendo Briefing
Tuesday June 2nd, 9:00am PDT (5:00pm BST)
Approx. 60 minutes in length

Sony Briefing
Tuesday June 2nd, 11:00am PDT (7:00pm BST)
Approx. 120 minutes in length

You can watch all of the briefings live in HD on GameTrailers.com - there are usually some really big announcements in these things so I'll probably end up watching all of them (maybe that's just me, total geek out).

Anybody else a little excited, or just me?

I'm not fussed at Nintendo's event this year. I'm interested in what Sony are announcing and Microsoft have apparently shifted their show timeslot slightly to accommodate a surprise. A few folk are guessing a Sony handheld but I doubt it. Probably just some motion control thing.

I think I'm more interested in the PSP this year. New Metal Gear, LBP, Gran Tourismo, Motorstorm... They all have my attention. Given Sony seem to be 'relaunching' the PSP I'm expecting some big annoucements.

But any Mario, Metroid or Zelda announcements for the Wii or DS (so long as its not Zelda DS...) will have me

I'm guessing you meant Xbox handheld there
But yeah the PSP Go! was leaked yesterday (pretty obvious it was deliberately leaked too). I'm not really too bothered about that as I already own a PSP - but as long as my PSP can play the new LBP, MGS and Gran Turismo games then I'm a happy chap. Those are the kind of games the PSP has needed from the start (although it could also do with some shorter 10-15 minute type games which you can just pick up and play).

I'm expecting some new Zelda/Mario/Metroid games from Nintendo - and maybe the Wii Fit online component which a few people are talking about. I think they'll have more announcements for the "hardcore" audience this year, at least I hope so.

I don't really know what to expect from Microsoft - they'll big up the new Halo 3 expansion, and the new Peter Molyneux game will be a big deal probably. I really hope they don't announce a motion controller - I'd much rather see them go for the apparent 3D motion camera instead.

Not long till the Microsoft one starts now - yay!

I'm more interested in what Sony has to show. If there's anything Microsoft can do to grab my attention its showcasing a new Dungeon Siege. Or possibly their new Zune HDs. Nintendo... well, I guess oldschool really.

Hah yea
But also interested in Assassins Creed 2 (just started playing the first, bloody brilliant!), Alan Wake, Trico, maybe Tekken 6 and some Crysis 2 details. Oh and I'd kill for some details on HL2 Episode 3 but I don't think Valve are attending.

You bet your scalding biscuits I'm excited! I'm waiting for my new Wii Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, Star Fox, Metroid, Kid Icarus, and forty new IP's! But yea, I'm excited. I have a feeling Nintendo won't repeat last year's snoreboreyawnfest.

Despite being loyal to Nintendo for all its awesomeness (not for fanboy's sake, but because I truly like their style the best. It's hard to explain the nintendo-y-ness) I am interested too in what Microsoft and Sony bring to the table. Even if I never get their stuff, it's still fun to ogle at and want to play. I am a computer and gaming guy after all, and I like seeing what different companies do and what games they make. It just so happens I think Nintendo's style is the best. I play the occasional FPS or realistic racer, but it gets old to have all the games look exactly alike.

I didn't want a PS3 until I discovered the extent of PSP and PS3 connectivity. I don't have enough moolah!

I was about to say the same thing. IGN is dead. Boy e3 is popular. This better be fixed before tomorrow.

I agree Rob, I love e3. It's just... awesome.

IGN looks to be back up, but I have to install the player in IE!

Nintendo intentionally abandoned those hardcore games. Its leaked down the grapevine that there will be a Mario title announced, but odds point to it being a sham cooking game or something. Nintendo seems terribly insecure in their top spot after the gamecube flop era, and I think that hesitation is going to cost them in the long run. And I haven't bought a wii game since Smash, and doubt I'll ever buy another (probly sell it)

Course they did. They're making a much bigger audience and revenue with the family casual titles these days. There are a number of 'real' games coming out from them, and probably always will be, but their priority is with their new market. Same with the DS.

I'd be surprised if they didn't reuse the Mario Galaxy engine, mind...

Well they know that their strategy of "appeal to the mass, forget the hardcore" is paying off very handily in the short term, but what I think is the problem isn't that they are intentionally spiting their userbase, but rather that they are extremely paranoid about losing their top spot now, and are being far, far too cautious. Nintendo took a big hit back with the N64 --> Cube, and I think the management took a blow to their psyche with that. We won't see any surprises come out of nintendo, just more shovelware and *extremely* sparse real titles.

In the long run its gonna tear them down obviously, they need to take their lead and make something of it. Unless every N-executive retires with 50 million dollars onto a small desert island with young beautiful girls, I'd say they're making a mistake :X

I don't think I'd be too sad if they reused the Mario Galaxy engine. Normally I want my games to be new and fresh, but there was just so much more they could have done with that idea. I'm hoping they'll have a Galaxy mini-sequel and another bigger title, but we all know there's 0% of that.

One thing I do hate about e3 is the politics. I despise it from all sides. Making snide remarks about each other and putting down others' business models... Lech.

Oh, and they're always really cheesy. Sometimes the people they get to stand up and talk just weren't meant to stand up and talk. Some are good, some, not so much.

2 things have stood out for me-

L4D2; NO. I don't understand why they're releasing a sequel a year after the original. It's so very un-Valve. Maybe it's a way to get around their image of giving out free DLC... Just release paid for games using the same engine and resources

And Dr. James versus Epic Games. Oh dear

That's what I was thinking. Am I the only one who doesn't like the idea of eliminating the controller? I mean sure there are cool applications, but there are only so many things you can do with that control scheme. It looks rather unexact and contrived to me. :\

Well it's cool, but it's really overhyped I think. Looks tiring too. I think they should have stuck with cool games instead of trying to make themselves look all innovatey by focusing on something that honestly doesn't look as fantastic as they make it out to be. That paint thing is neat, but you'd tire of it in ten minutes. This is kind of like Nintendo's showing last year, except motionplus is something that should have been integrated from the start. I'm hoping Nintendo focuses on awesome games this year and cuts the boasting. Be humble!

I actually think its good that they are trying to do something new, just instead of new games for a old series.
But this motion thing have been done a couple times before, and never really took off.
If they CAN do it right though, I can see some amazing games.
(Some shooters, or a new elder scrolls game)

I wouldn't be surprised if the Natal thing never makes it to market to be honest - at least for the 360 anyway (maybe the next generation Xbox). The fact they gave it a "code name" and showed no real games for it shows that it must be pretty early in development. The marketing video they showed for it was clearly not how it works at the moment. It just seems like a lot of work to me - the Mylo thing was cool and all, but how would it work in an actual game? Surely it's going to be 1-2 years until we actually get to play with this thing.

Biggest surprises of the conference for me:
+ Actual Alan Wake footage (finally) which was mind blowing
+ Metal Gear Solid: Rising on 360 (kind of expected though)
+ Left 4 Dead 2 (pretty gutted about this - Valve normally support their games for longer)

After touting around not having gimmicks, it seems odd that Microsoft would turn around and try to introduce controller-less gameplay. As much as they'd have you believe otherwise, it is a gimmick until we have holodecks. Perfect motion capture is still sci-fi stuff as of this demo.

I think Microsoft really doesn't care about Nintendo, like they say. They are obviously cutting into the market with the new dashboard and the avatars, but they're Microsoft, they always do that. They aren't worried about Nintendo, they're expecting to pummel the competition down over time like in all other areas they dabble. Whether or not that will be true is anyone's guess...

Good grief, I'm such a nerd. I don't even play that many video games anymore, it's almost more fun anticipating them than playing them! Of course, I'm also putting off homework by examining these things, so.

It's not odd really - they think this thing will be huge, and if it is then it will make then a TON of cash. That's only ever going to happen if it gets to a point were it works like it did in that marketing video.

Kudo's avatar acted pretty weird when he moved it around at the start. That could be more to do with the software rather than the hardware. But the fact they bothered to show the thing in an important conference shows how early in development the thing could have been. The painting thing was pretty cool though it was pretty much just splashing paint around. Didn't exactly look great for drawing pictures. I'm sure this was just something to demonstrate the hardware and not something that would actually be released though. The creation of the elephant at the end was pretty cool.

I'm not really convinced. Could be because I grew up using a controller and don't really want things to change - either way I see Microsoft promoting Natal as a gimmick rather than an actual game changing interface, just to make some quick money.

More news coming from Microsoft at E3 (this stuff wasn't in the briefing):

+ Games on Demand service coming to Live in August with 30 titles
+ Win avatar items as rewards in games coming soon
+ Also a marketplace to buy stuff for your avatar on the way

More info on the way. I'll update the first post with all the big news soon-ish.

Seems awfully gimmicky.

You know, nothing was shown besides the tech demo, no game support announced, no release date, no titles, etc. Theres a good change this is merely a pipe dream, and they know it, but they intentionally showed it just as a jib at nintendo. You know, nintendo being a bit twitchy and all, it could provoke a reaction from their management. And that might be a better success for the 360 than actually seriously developing the darned thing O_o

I've got a wii and I don't play the 'motion' stuff, its all a gimmick. I loved the zelda/mario titles, and smash is a good party game, but it could all have been done with regular controllers. Zelda and its tacked on wiimote slashing is probably the best use I've seen of the motion controls O_o

imo its seems more like business posturing than actual serious design

I don't like useless waggle any more than the next dude. For some reason I really just like the ergonomics of the wiimote. It's the only video game system I can play sprawled on the couch with my arms stretched out. The pointer is fantastic too. There are cool uses of the motion but it's not the defining feature for me. And in all honesty, even if I hated the Wii's design (and I don't, I love it) I would probably have one just to play Mario and Zelda. I guess that makes me sound like a fanboy, but then again maybe I am.

No, I'm not. Because I think the 360 and PS3 are cool in their own right.

I don't mince words with it; I bought it merely so I could play those zelda/mario AAA titles.
I really could have cared less about the motion controls, but I knew they had top titles ready to go, and that was enough of a reason to jump on it. But their continued support has been.... lacking. I got one for price and games, and it was well worth the $200 US over here, but I'm pretty much done with it now. I'm really thinking that unless they announce any new AAA titles this E3, I'll pawn it off or give it away

I just watched the Halo 3 ODST video. I missed most of the previews when the stream cut out and I just went to live. This guy is one of the few people who did a good job of presenting, and almost had a theater stage presence. Of course that's probably just because he's very good in comparison with the rest of them. I still haven't been able to play Halo 3.

I've never really been a fan of the Halo 3 campaign and ODST didn't really change my mind. Cinematically it looked amazing, but gameplay wise it felt like it was missing something (the same feeling I had playing the Halo 3 campaign). Like walk up to a wall, press a button to plant a bomb (no bomb planting animation for the player also? just doesn't seem very immersive), shoot some guys, fire a rocket. I'm sure the multiplayer will be awesome though.

valves thing with L4D2 seems a little questionable. L4D barely had any content to begin with, just a single major DLC release, and now all the rest goes into a sequel? O_o not remotely worth shelling out $50 a pop for. Well, at least its better than Blizzard/Activision trying to squeeze us dry with starcraft 2(/3/4), but still

Lads and lasses we have a traditional Mario game coming to the Wii. Educated guess is that its a flat out new Mario game. There's no "New" before it, so it won't be a kind of prequel like New Mario DS, it was at the Wii booths. Such an announcement would explode me.

Clayton, by 'reusing the Mario Galaxy engine' I didn't necessarily mean the entirety of it, eg the gravity/planetary aspects. I'd just be surprised if they didn't reuse it (having said that, Nintendo have certainly stuck to the one engine, one game rule many times over the years).

Eg:

Capcom with PN03/Resi 4/Godhand

Nintendo with Wind Waker/Twilight Princess,
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass/'The Train Thing'

As development costs go up, they've become less 'wasteful' with their engines than they were in the SNES/N64 era.

As far as I'm aware it is totally not like Nintendo to cover up their booths - so hopefully we're in for some really big announcements Hoping that Sony and Nintendo's briefings are as good, if not better, than Microsofts

I hope that Mario Bros game for the Wii isn't 2D. I'm all for 2D platformers but I'd rather have another 3D one at the moment. I'm also hoping this isn't the only major announcement. I'm living in dreamland, but it would be awesome if Nintendo would pull out several big guns... like four or five of them, rather than maybe just two AAA titles.

I'm also interested to see what new spiffy features Sony comes up with...

I won't be able to watch Nintendo's conference live, because I've got class right when it starts.

Ok, except for the vitality sensor, it was acceptable. As for the sensor, What the frizzles? >_< That brought down the overall quality. Anywho, I'm actually pretty stoked about SMG2, it's something I really wanted but never expected to happen. Nintendo, making one of my whimsical ideas? The New Super Mario Bros Wii will probably grace my gameshelf, and Wii Sports Resort is kind of a given. I like the look of the new Metroid game, very epic, but I was kind of wanting another FPS. I'm hoping it's a conglomabob of third and first person shooters and 2d stuffs.

All the good stuff was at the end, pretty much. It was funny that Reggie actually made a comment about the whole blog thing, since e3 shows usually keep comments on chatter few and far in between.

No Star fox, Pikmin, Wii Zelda, or Kid Icarus. :\ Still ok though. But I REALLY coulda done without the vitality sensor. I'm satisfied, but I was really expecting Nintendo to pull the plugs and blow everyone away with more projects.

You know, on second thought, this is pretty awesome. I just secretly had my hopes too high. Yoshi in SMG2 was enough to make it awesome. Though I'm still waiting for those titles I mentioned on Wii nintendo. Wii, not the next system. No time for the Sony show.

I really enjoyed the Sony conference - the Nintendo one not so much. I think in terms of games Sony had the best conference, and in terms of surprises/new technology Microsoft had the best conference. The Nintendo conference gave us Metroid, Zelda and Mario but it's not like they were unexpected, so there wasn't really as much surprise. And I like surprises

Microsoft had too much showboating, Nintendo had killer titles but lacked any sort of punch, Sony was just all round good even if they did have a slow start.
Got myself some goodies from E3 being sent over from attendees , really should try and go there myself next year.

GOTM - MAY 2009 - 3RD PLACE!
3rd June, 2009 at 03:42:18 -

Natal - I can't wait for the 3 average games that support it.

Sony's Ball on Stick - so, it's wii-motion plus. . . except it's a year away?

Mario Galaxy 2 - Awesome! Except I need to go beat mario galaxy before I bother buying it. At least I can ride Yoshi in a new mario game that doesn't suck (sunshine)

Metroid - We'll See. I have prime 3 for wii, but between the fact that I don't like aimless wandering games, and I don't like fps games, I don't really play it. If they can at least do away with one of those angles for the next metroid, I'll probably buy it.

PS3 Price Drop - oh wait, they didn't announce this. Not that it matters, even if they dropped the price it'd only go down to $299. Which is still $150 more than I'll spend.

Overall I think Microsoft had the weakest showing. And Nintendo had the best, only because I don't have a ps3 and won't for the next few years.

Natal sounds to me to be a combo of the Eyetoy, night-vision goggles, and Wii Speak. Not sure why the Wii Speak part is in there. But okay, they can do what they want.

I'd buy a PSP Go simply because I don't have a PSP, my brother's lacks a working battery, his Memory Stick lacks the space to hold enough downloads, and I want to play Crash Bandicoot again. But that's pretty expensive.

In other news, why Blue and Yellow Toad as opposed to Red Toad? He's the most respectable of the Toads (Toad being my favorite character) and why are they all exactly the same? Why not have Mario, Toad, Luigi, and Yoshi, and have them have stat differences, and you choose who to play as you jump in? But yeah, I'd buy that. And Mario Galaxy 2, even if it is essentially an expansion pack to Galaxy. I haven't actually seen Metroid yet so I don't have an opinion.

Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do to Deserve This? is a great game. I played the Japanese demo before.

My E3 Impressions

Microsoft's wowed me from a software perspective, and seemed to have the most focus. I felt like they had a very strong game lineup, and a couple of great surprises (Reach, Natal, Alan Wake not being vaporware). I was a little disappointed that Bungie didn't offer a new IP, and by Rare's absence (tho admittedly they haven't produced anything good since the N64). Overall tho, amazing software presentation they really stepped up as a system for the hardcore gamer.

Project Natal impressed me, although I'm still not convinced that motion control is ever going to completely replace traditional controllers. Still, I'm excited to see what they do end up using it for and will probably check it out. I'm also curious to see how it effects Nintendo's market dominance since the Wii's major selling point is its unique controller. Personally, I don't see the add-ons making a significant impact since they won't be bundled with every system sold, but next generation could be interesting since presumably all three companies will be integrating their second-generation motion tech.

Nintendo's conference was a disappointment. New Super Mario Bros. Wii looked like great fun, but lacked online. I don't know what to make of Team Ninja developing a Metroid title... Metroid is all about adventure first, action later, and I just feel like the house of Ninja Gaiden will fail to strike that balance properly. Tho admittedly a part of me wouldn't mind seeing Zero Suit Samus with their trademark jiggle physics.

Mario Galaxy 2's announcement was welcome and unexpected, but a small part of me died when I realized that Nintendo spent more time talking about a fashion game and a 'murder mystery book club for women' game for the DS than they did about Zelda. Seriously, I get that they're trying to appeal to the casual gamer, but they're not even trying to appease the hardcore anymore. Tho after seeing their completely botched Mario Kart and Smash Bros. efforts, I guess we're not missing much. Still tho, can we get some legitimate games on the console please!?!

Sony's conference nearly put me to sleep, but ultimately I was impressed by the PS3's software lineup -- now if they'd just lower the price I might consider buying one. The presentation itself was far too long winded though, and I couldn't really ride a wave of excitement like I did watching the Microsoft conference. PS3's motion control solution was pretty awkward looking in its R&D stage, but still managed to impress me (particularly the 1:1 tracking and video compositing).

I don't like the PSP Go at all. I get that they're trying to push digital distribution, but why alienate all the early adopters by cutting the UMD slot? They should've held that one back for the inevitable PSP2. Also, a slider design doesn't make any sense at all. The biggest problem with the PSP is that you can't stick it in your pocket without worrying about scratching the screen. I like the form factor but they should've made it a clamshell instead of a slider.

Your thoughts?

They should include some method of transferring a UMD or using a serial number to unlock a DD version. Because yea, whilst the PSP is good all my games are locked up on UMD or are PS1 games I ripped myself. The Go is a no go for me, a friend over there got a chance to play it and said it's not comfortable at all.

And I'd imagine why Nintendo didn't speak much about their upcoming decent games is because of surprise or they might be too early to discuss.

Unless that Mario4Dead4swords gets raving reviews I think I'll pass on it. I'd only get it for the multiplayer.

Well they have the exploit now (or did), it's just a matter of building a new M33. But I agree I think we'll get there eventually.

And Sony! Naughty boys. Learn from Apple. People hacked their own apps onto the iPhone so Apple released the App store and made a kajillion dollars. It's a bad idea to shut out the poorer and hobbyist developers when theres lot of money and funtimes to be had.

Viva Pinata, Conker Live And Reloaded, Banjo: Nuts and Bolts, infidel! Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo were also adequate games, when not judged against the studio's previous output.

Oh, and everyone knows that the original Perfect Dark is coming to XBLA with full 60fps, right? Yum.

I'll admit I didn't play Viva Pinata, but Conker Live and Reloaded was an N64 port (albeit a very pretty one), Banjo: Nuts and Bolts got average review scores and fell off my radar once I found out they were abandoning any ambitions of making it a traditional platformer.

Perfect Dark Zero was terrible (I bought it at launch and really tried to like it). Kameo was in development for 3 different systems and it showed (clearly rushed for launch also)

Perfect Dark XBLA will be a straight port. Why would I play it over new games coming this year like Modern Warfare 2, ODST, or L4D2?

Until they release Killer Instinct 3, or something original of the AAA-caliber they were once capable of, I will continue to be disappointed in Rare. All their real talent left to form Free Radical in 1999.

The demo of nuts and bolts was soooooo boring. I mean the old banjo kazooie was already a fetch quest, but in the new one they took out anything that gave it action at all. That and the characters babbling on and on and the overcomplicated explanation of, "You have to find one of these things, and bring it here, and then go over there and get 50 of those and put them in this and then that will turn into that and then you can go in here". All in the first 5 minutes. What happened to "get to the end of the level without getting your ass kicked" platformers?

No Star fox, Pikmin, Wii Zelda, or Kid Icarus. :\ Still ok though. But I REALLY coulda done without the vitality sensor. I'm satisfied, but I was really expecting Nintendo to pull the plugs and blow everyone away with more projects.

I legitimately thought Iwata was making a self-deprecating joke about his company when he announced the Vitality Sensor. Then I realized he was serious and just kind of sat their staring at the screen in disbelief.

As for the major projects, Nintendo has abandoned the hardcore gamer in favor of making money off tween girls and soccer moms. And the few efforts they have made were watered down versions of previous games (Mario Kart Wii and Smash Bros. Brawl in particular were dumbed-down compared to their predecessors). Hell, even the 4-player Mario they announced, while it looks fun, won't have an online mode, and is clearly catered to casual gamers. Metroid: Other M was farmed out to Team Ninja of all people (who are completely incapable of capturing the tone of that series).

Oh, I'm not saying they've not been a disappointment for many (I don't have much of an opinion either way), I just disagreed that they've done nothing good since those nostalgic N64 days. They had their flaws back then, too. All their talent certainly did not leave with Doak and Ellis to go to FRD, however often outside-of-industry game websites claim otherwise.

Also, I'd really consider giving Nuts And Bolts a go; it's an inventive experience that has been largely overlooked thanks to the confusion of it being a Banjo game, but also not. If you can get past the tagged on Banjo franchise I'd recommend it. I think it suffered reviews-wise thanks to that disappointment factor; I know that was the case with at least 3 magazine reviewers within future publishing. Perhaps Rare shouldn't have attached Banjo to after all.

But yes - like Pinata, it's quite an original, fresh, fun concept, maybe give it a rent.

It'll all blow over.

Too bad I don't have the patience to read all these new posts. I've been gone for the past few days. I skimmed a few though and I must say that I don't think Nintendo's abandoned the hardcore yet. They need more titles coming out but there's only so much they can do alone. Nintendo is making a Metroid game, another SMG that satisfies the socks off of me, another Mario game, and a Zelda game is in the works. 3rd Party developers really need to step up like HVS and stop shoveling out crap for a quick buck. But that won't likely happen. Multiplayer non-online games aren't automatically non-hardcore, and I find the whole hardcore definition and arguments flawed anyway.

So yea, we need more good Nintendo games, but they haven't given up on us. Not by a long shot.

Zis is vat I vanted to hear. SMG2 is more hardcore than the first. And the first was pretty sweet. I mean... Yoshi!

Oh and I just rewatched the Other M trailer... I was being silly when I suggested wanting mashups of third-person, first-person, and 2d gameplay. I think they're all in there. O_O Plus that SMG sequel I wanted and another Mario game! (Though not 3D ) If only they'd showed more of the Zelda Wii title. :\

I'd given up on there being a black Wii. I don't understand why they didn't stick with it, since it looks so much more sleek/slick.

Watched a few chunks of the Sony conference, lotsa cool stuff. That 256 player MAG game looks neat. PSP Go is ok, if I had the money I'd probably go with a 3000 though. The motion controller is looking pretty cool actually, but I think MotionPlus will provide a similar experience (minus the video overlay, which I can do without) and will be in the types of games I enjoy more. I really need to find a friend with a PS3, I haven't got to play one in-depth yet.

Mag looked smart but hella boring at the same time. But warzone shooters don't interest me much. I also don't like their being a team leader, unless you can do your own thing like be a distant sniper or a spy or something.

It wasn't so much the shooter thing that was cool as it was the massive amount of players. Being a team leader is a pain in the butt and that's why RTS's get a bit old to me, since assigning objectives takes away from the fun of spontaneously exploding things as you go. I really only like the occasional round of Halo or CoD and a playthrough of Metroid Prime when it comes to FPS's. It was still cool, but one of the many games I'd almost rather watch other people play than play myself.

At least the main two presenters for Sony weren't too awfully cheesy.

Yes. I think they were attempting a joke there (there was a winkwink) but it wasn't worthy of laughter. Reggie himself and even the others aren't so bad, but when you get them all together... :\ I just wish they'd ditch the cutesy cheeseball and show us awesomeness. (Because you cannot deny, Reggie is awesomeness.)

At least nintendo people don't pause and say "Yea" and start clapping when they mention something mildly interesting. That seems so forced. >.<

Looks like they're still harping the "looney tunes" art style for zelda that they've been doing with everything since windwaker; look at the (presumably) female in front of link. Clearly along the same lines as the terrible "twilight" effects in twilight princess, instead of the naturalistic OOT path sort of thing. And those zelda games really would have been a ton better if they got rid of those extraneous elements.

maybe I'm just too old now. Back when the old zelda games were done in what was effectively the western style of graphics, whereas now its re-japanifying, the whole anime effect on everything. Besides irritating me on principle, the real loss is immersion, since you kind of kill the suspension of disbelief when you have crap like this in your game:
Image

was especially bad in TP since they worked so hard with the wii controls & feedback to make it feel immersive
look at OOT, where the most whacked out thing at all was that Bongo Bongo boss. And thats far removed from anything at all you'd see in modern zelda titles. Track back as far as LTTP, and theres not a single element of the game that stands out like that (one of the reasons LTTP is verifiably the most well made game of all time)

That could be because it was one of the first Zelda titles you played. Links Awakening was my first and I skipped LTTP until years later with the GBA remake (never had a SNES), but I'm not seeing one of the best games made with that. Infact nothing is pushing me to complete it unlike what I had with OoT and TP (Majoras Mask had the same effect on me as LTTP).

The art style doesn't detract any from the overall experience. The proportions are a bit exaggerated sure, but its within the boundaries of caricature and in some cases humour. Besides that style never hindered FFVII, Windwaker or the DS Final Fantasy's from being figgin brilliant games.

ps. sorry if some letters are missing. I'm using a funny keyboard.

I had real trouble trying to like the last couple of Zelda games. Like Pixelthief I think LTTP is one of the best games ever made (with Links awakening as second best), and loved every Zelda up to the Windwaker, except Majora's mask. Minish Cap was fun, kind of weird and very short, TP doesn't feel like Zelda to me and I gave up with the Phantom hourglass after a few hours.

I also like all the old graphics, from the gameboy games, and snes.
I even like the original NES graphics.

I like all of the 3D art styles they've had so far. I gave up on Majora's Mask because I only have 2 minutes to defeat the giant fish and I don't wanna redo the dungeon. I hate the time mechanic in that game.

At any rate, as long as I get my 3D zelda game, I don't care. I've loved all of the newest iterations and their art styles.

I was thinking something along the same lines, because of the jewel and the coloring. Shape-shifting mabob? Would be a nice metaphor for using the wiimote as a sword. Perhaps that thing IS all of the items in the game.

As long as there is no wolf in the new one I should be happy.

This what he said last year:

When asked about innovating within existing franchises, Miyamoto was surprisingly critical. "What I've been saying to our development teams recently is that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was not a bad game, by any means. But, still, it felt like there was something missing," he said. "And while, personally, I feel like Super Mario Galaxy was able to do some things that were very unique, at the same time, from another perspective, certain elements of it do feel somewhat conservative." He commented, "this is something I've been talking to both of those teams about," and that "hopefully [the next Mario and Zelda] will feel newer and fresher than their most recent versions."

So hopefully this new zelda will be good.

I'm really excited about all of the Nintendo stuff! Last year Animal Crossing City Folk was the only good announcement worth while! The new Metroid interest me the most. 2nd place would "Mario $ Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story." The first one was probably my second favorite RPG of all time, possibly even first! Where as Metroid was always my favorite series. And I can't wait to see them finally stray from the Prime. I love the looks of how it'll tie up fusion, (hint hint, who do you think the guy saying "Any objections, Lady?" was?), and I'm pretty sure the orange thing that shoots the beam that Samus summersalts out of the way was Motherbrain's final form from Super Metroid. I beleive I read somewhere, in an interview with Ninja Team, it'll also tie up loose ends from Super Metroid.

My only problem with the new Metroid is that it looks so colorful... Metroid was meant to be a really dark game with an sinister and almost sad feel to it.

But I'm still super excited, (as you can see by my extreme paragraph of doom I just wrote )

One thing i think Nintendo really needs to do is add a hard mode option to zelda games. Just give a second option where bad guys are a bit faster, hurt you more, and take less damage per hit.

I thought Prime 3 was great. Other M looks ok, but I liked that Prime was like Nintendo's Halo... a nice FPS. Oh well.

Natal... Natal looks frustrating. They want you to think it's more immersive, but I think it pushes you away from it more. Having a solid object like a wiimote or the PS3 wand of doom seems better to me, like a tether--something to keep you attached and interested. Plus, how many times do you think it will misread one of those page turning gestures? Or maybe hear the wrong command? And the huge sweeping gestures look tiring. They overhype it, and I can just TELL it's one of those things that everyone thinks is revolutionary but is nowhere near as good or developed as it looks. Kinda like the wiimote, but now we're getting that 1:1 at least. I've read a lot of comments where everyone thinks the holodeck has arrived. They forget that these things are never as good as they look.

Ah well, I just think Natal will be a giant glazed-over disappointment. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'll be glad if I am.

I have doubts about Other M, I hope it doesn't get completely bound by story and forgets the exploration. I also hope it doesn't play like recent action games where in boss fights it prompts you to press buttons as you watch a movie of your character defeating them, argh!!!

Oracle of Ages and Seasons came out around the same time as Ocarina of Time, or at least like a year or two later.
Take a look at the character concepts though:
