Thanks for the comments! Here's a small concept mockup of a level.
I'm working on this at the speed of maybe. I'm going to see how far graphically I can go, and then start coding. I'm going to take my time with this one. Let me know what you all think of the above.

looking pretty good.
The background is maybe a bit too light and has a bit too much contrast in comparison to the foreground (which should have more contrast/focus).
I made an edit of the colours to show what I meant about the contrast.
You may also want to work on your tiles so that they're more "seemless".
Thanks for the edit crit!
I'll see what I can do with the background.

I'll try, but not a big concern. Maybe when I have more time in another week.
And before anyone asks: I am using Graphics Gale with a Wacom Bamboo tablet for some stuff. Though whether or not the tablet has an effect is yet to be seen.

I feel ya. I'm easily involving in surplus creation.
I like that style- quite unique! Just wondering why a guy in a green polo and blue jeans get-up would have a big sword, though.
As for the backgrounds, Alastair's right, they'll need to be toned down. But still, just a LITTLE more than his example. Try sticking to two shades for the background. Maybe Get rid of the lightest shade at the top of each brick in the background. It'll flow more evenly.

Medieval cosplay history buff enthusiest. And, his son goes missing from rubbing an antique ring. The ring takes whoever to the same location, but not back. So he goes off to find his son. I wanted to throw the whole "save the world" story cliche with an ultirior motive. And how can you tell it's a polo?
