With the Arcade up and running and with some more games coming in tomorrow, I think it is a great time to start up a little TDC Arcade compo. We challenge YOU to make a cool Arcade game.
The winner will get courtesy of clickteam the FLASH extension for FREE. That is a $69 value folks! For the peeps who already bought the flash we are working on getting something equally cool.
So da rules then!
* Games must be open source only. This is to add security and to add the daily click arcade high score system. Once completed please PM Rikus with the link or email to: rikusk@gmail.com --Be detailed in your description on what the game is about and what the player has to do. Also let us know if you want your game to be vitalized or flashed.
* Please as the author -Do Not- include a cheat feature in your game,
while the admins do check for such code if such a game is found out of having
the abbility to cheat, both the game and the author will be banned from the arcade.
* Games must be addictive with a arcade High Score setting in mind.
* Resolution/play area should not exceed 640*480 and keep in mind that larger games will have longer loading times.
* Keep 1 frame empty on where we can put the Arcade Highscore code in, also be sure to let us know were we can pull the highscore data from. (Example, player 1 or player 2 etc)
Also there's a bug with the current version of vitalize that means mouse events don't work, and there's no fix for it yet.
With that in mind if you submit your game and we do find a error that prevents us from converting it to either flash or vitalized we will of course let you know.
Other then that anything goes, make people have some fun with your game! This compo will will last until April 16th. Feel free to create a project page detailing the progress of your game and post the link below. Any questions or if I missed anything let me know. Good Luck!

Noob question: Exactly how would I be able to store the score? I would guess via ini, but this is for flash/vitalize. How would we/I do this?
All platforming problems can be mostly solved here:
I have actually just recently released a new highscore board based game to TDC called real360 Pong. There is a game like it, but Clubsoft told me that mine is a lot better, so can I enter this in the compo and will any of this hurt my chances of winning?
I would really like to get my hands on a free version of Flash, since its out of my hands right now to buy it.
I was hoping that Flash limitations would apply also for Vitalize games in terms of extensions. Then these games could be recompiled to Flash afterwards. Vitalize is not a good thing - the Arcade needs to get more Flash games and forget the Vitalize. I had a perfect example yesterday when I introduced the Arcade to my girlfriend (who occasionally plays casual games on various game portals). When launching one of the Vitalized games her reaction was like "nah I don't want to install anything.." when the Vitalize install question popped up. This is what non-clicker users will think and they will leave the site. So this is basically about decision whether to build the Arcade for clickers or instead try to establish it as a generic casual gaming portal which attracts casual gamers outside the community, which then works as a "platform" for click developers to develop content for and to get players for their games (rather than just developing content for the fellow developers to play).
Other than that - and the open source requirement - this competition looks great and hopefully we'll see many new cool games to the Arcade!
MJK for now until clickteam patches it, flash is just too darn limited to transfer all vitalized games over, trust me with tried.
So yes the arcade will both serve vitalize and flash for now "until" flash gets a couple of good updates from clickteam. However there is good news, and do note this, once clickdoes patches up the flash plugin it is "very" easy for us to save all the remaining vitalized games to the flash format. So even if the new games are compiled into vitalize now, weeks from now when flash is patched we can just recompile vitalize into flash. So no worries

Are there any restrictions of posting some of the old games to the competition? I mean many could "remake" their games and make them example flash compatible.
So for Clubsoft to create a highscore system in our games, all we need to do is make an extra frame where we want it and have some place to store the score?
Could I possibly use a global value or an alterable value in an object?
By default, I'll take the Score of Player1 as the final score to submit - however, if you let me know if this differs, I can use a global variable for example.
Alternatively, you could create an event in the level that sets the score of player1 to the value of whatever you're using as your score.
Does the game have to be made in MMF2? Or can I make it in MMF1.2 and ask Clubby really nice to convert it into an .mfa? I'd of course make sure it'd be convertable.

My guess would be no restrictions on this, since many of the games on the arcade were already made and played before.
Blood of the Ancient One, Seen only as Shadow, Faster than Lightning, Fierce as the Greatest Dragon, Nearly Invisible, Floating in a Dream, Entered through the Demon Door, Destroyer of Evil in a Realm with a Red Sky Scarred, Who could I be ?
I would have assumed that genuine remakes are fine (ie. If they've been re-made from scratch).
If all you do is make modifications to an existing game, then it would be very unfair for it to be eligible for entry in the competition - since everyone else only gets 1 month in which to make a game.
You could of course still submit it to the Arcade though.
Re: Lembi's Post
I'm guessing you'd have to count backwards from some value, and submit the remaining time left as the score. Otherwise the scoreboard would be backwards.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that this is the official answer for the reason Sketchy gave. Remakes are good, old games shouldn't be entered. Even if it weren't so, you'd probably score lower for submitting an old game anyway!
(Though do please submit your old games too. )
Do we have a DC Point or Arcade credit (AC? ACDC! ) reward for submitting games? There should be one if there isn't!
It's probably best to keep the rule the same across the board. It's not unusual to have a competition mandate new entries. Though if everyone thinks the rule is unfair, (or that an exception should be made) then it should be changed!
I'm almost halfway done with my minigame It's called "Avalanche Ascent" and your objective is to see how high you can climb an icy mountain using your trusty ice picks! It's going great so far! Here are a few screenhots:
Thanks Rikus I worked on the game some more today. The stuff is more "randomized" now and the icicles work. Both the boulder and the icicle can be shattered by ice picks. Cracked ice will now make you skid down farther making you lose a bit of your height score. I also added powerups: +Ice Picks ; +Health ; Destroy (stuff on screen) ; Speed (faster climbing)
Of course
The compo entry needs to be a source file, so that it can be modified to make it suitable for the arcade.
It's up to you if you want to upload another version in the downloads section aswell.
Obviously I'm not an admin / competition organiser, but this is just common sense.
I have a question about music and sounds. You have to use the "built-in" music tab in the editor, but when it's converted to Flash, all of the music will be converted to .mp3's, right? You cant use other extensions like the Direct Show So what type of music file does MMF2 support, because the current ones I have wont work. Also, any suggestions for a music converter?
umm, I'm almost done with my game and there's still about 20 days left Are you allowed to enter multiple games? Even if you cant can I still make more games that are for the arcade, but not for the compo? (i dont have flash)

Pretty fun. I like all the power ups but I was annoyed at how you went forwards when u pressed up and back when u pressed down. They shuold just go up and down IMO.
Ooooh W3R3W00F, i rather like your game, very much reminded me of Rock 'N Roll Racing when i first booted it up Loving the isometric shooting tomfoolery!
Thanks, Radon! I personally thought it lacked something though. It could be that the colors aren't bright enough, or maybe more powerups were needed? I'm not really sure.
One thing I noticed was how it seemed my car just randomly changed weapons. I guess I just didn't notice the power ups, they are white and transparent.
How about you go ahead and make the game, and then if you don't like the prize, just use it with mochiads and submit it closed-source in the downloads!
Just reminder that the compo will be finishing soon! I don't know if an official time was mentioned, but let's consider this the closing time as of now:
When it is no longer April the 16th anywhere in the world, the competition is closed.
Hey guys. There's no way I'm going to finish my game by tonight. However, when I do finish, how can I submit it to the arcade? I do not currently have the flash converter, but I am thinking about buying it. Thanks.
I guess you have to send it to Rikus, following what he said in his 1st post, even if you're not going to enter the contest.
What he said in his 1st post applies to all games in the Arcade.
Okay to do list:
clean bathroom parts
add y to game and hope to finish that up before 4:45
4:45 go to he-, er work
10:15ish get home even though schedule says 9:30 (yeah right)
finish up y, try and send to rikus before 12
stop sitting here and start on list, check
All platforming problems can be mostly solved here:
IF I'VE GOT THIS RIGHT (And I may very well not), this countdown should lead to the last moment that it's the 16th of April, 2010, anywhere on planet earth.
Oh, by the way : I hope the judgment will be done by Rikus, or some admins, and that there will not be a poll or anything like this. It could result in people voting for their friends. And I think the admins will be really fair judges
Too bad for you, Watermelon, even with 5 hours left?

I can have mine done in another 12-24 hours. In fact, I coulda had it done at least 3-4 days ago. But that's another story.
I was working on a shmup. I finished the engine and enemies and lost interest. Until the deadline was up in my face. Now I have 20 levels to make. Bottom Line, I can't finish.
I have a serious problem with procrastination. I'm going to do something about it, but I keep putting it off.
Awesomeness is Watermelon.

This is Koji. Copy and paste Koji to your sig so he can acheive world domination.
Also PLEASE tidy the arcade screen. This is just a general comment
Everytime I enter the page I get around... 12 errors messages (# of games) and it's really offputting
I'm sure you're aware of this; but I don't understand why this comp was setup if the page wasn't working right in the first place
I still haven't received an answer as to the current plan for judging! If we don't get one by this weekend, I'll just have everyone send their entries again and Jon and I will judge them.
Still have not had any more admins sign up for judging.
Here are the options:
Wait a little longer for the other admins.
Recruit some non-entrant members to judge.
Only use my scores, which I should have time to finish by today or tomorrow, depending on how long I take to mow the lawn. (I strongly advise against this option.)
I consider to purchase that SWF upgrade to MMF, but I wait for the results to see who won. I myself have an entry in the compo and I probably have to halt my purchase until I see the result, even if I don't know the chances of each piece in the competition to win.
I would include it anyway, but it appears the download link is broken. And my computer doesn't like vitalize.
I've got most of the games scored, minus Elementas and one game I'm not sure is an entry (working on that). Hope to have the scores up by this weekend, depending on if the other scores are available by then.

Paste this link on your browser surf line and it will work for you! Don't just click it because there is no hotlinking in my account!
I just really REALLY want to get the arcade updated
I trust Clayton's word, but waiting for the other admins has gone too long
If there is something wrong with the converting progress for certain games, do tell!
There are still only two people to my knowledge that can put games in the arcade, and I'm not one of them! I have no hand in the submission of games to the arcade. Sorry.
If a couple members think they could provide a balanced rating of the games, then we can go with that. This has gone on far too long.
Hi all - i have two games left to review elementas and rythmix calculix. Elemenas won't download properly - keep getting corrupt file and rythmix calculix won't open for me as i don't have flash.mfx in my extensions folder.
Can the creators of the aforementioned games please provide me with new download links and also a compiled version in the case of rythmix calculix?
If i can get these two files today i can send OMC my scores.
Hi, I'm the creator of Rhythmix Calculix. Actually I haven't read this topic since a while, I thought the contest was cancelled.
The Flash.mfx extension is the Flash Object, which works like the Vitalize Object. It is provided with the Flash exporter.
I can send a compiled flash version of the game, do you want it to be sent to the email address shown in your profile?
Sorry about delays! Been working on other DC projects, but will get the rest up soon.. had a few issues converting some of the games, so I'll get mails sent off to the authors
Neat.
I didn't mind the delay, but these things are annoying when there are no messages about it (excluding brief new sentences)
Clayton did fine
... all I like to know is when the games get submitted to the arcade
Also, I mentioned an arcade-page error in my last post, anyone care to explain WHAT that is?
Waiting for two games to be judged. I didn't put them on the list I sent to lembi because a few stragglers submitted their entries after everyone else. Word of warning--if a competition's organizer has to leave, cancel the competition. Or at least be sure the judges were even lined up beforehand.
Aww, we gotta keep having compo's like these, even if the previous one wasn't perfectly executed! Afterall, if we'd given up on rockets after the first cock-up, we'd have never landed on the moon!
Now that the results are here, let me say that the game was actually made in 1-2 days. When I first heard of the competition, it was going to end in a few days, and I did NOT want to miss this chance. By this time I only really just returned to The Daily Click.
Neonworld Grix would have been a more polished game if I had more time, and hearing about members's work getting delayed for 2 weeks (when I was over a panic being a day late) made me rage. I have a downloadable version of the game somewhere... I will post it here soon. The review was fair and I generally got an enjoyable experience from you lot. I wasn't expecting to be near the bottom but more in the middle, but I can't always win.
If it pleases you to know, once my game is up on the arcade, I will start tracking my "comments" to see what I can fix. I'm working on a remake/sequel to this game to be downloaded as a single player experience with MANY un-used gameplay ideas which I couldn't put in this game, updated graphics (but still simple), FUCKING GOD DAMN MUSIC, much better sound, far more options.
Now... the difficultly, to me, is one of the major highlights as I intended the score of the game to be a challenge between players. I will be adding lives and more polished levels and engine, but no-safe spots and the difficultly level will remain the same.
Thanks for accepting my game, and I hope this new one would fix everything. If I knew the comp would get delayed, I would have a much better result. But for 1-2 days work, I'm proud.
I would like to present my new scores in I Will Die 2 game... Its really awesome game to play .. Try yourself and get high scores....
