Problem with the current rating system:
- No anonymosity. Rating something bad because you don't like it (a valid reason) means that people would report and attack you.
- Opposite with articles.. you can rate something 0 for no reason and nobody will know.
- If you or your game/article has a lot of fanboys/haters, then they'll be rating
- If you give a completely honest 2-4 star rating, your vote is practically wasted.
- Really good games score lower than somewhat good games because of higher expectations.

No matter what system you give, someone will try to break it, and people will be upset when it's broken. The best rating system for TDC would be something that lets people be honest but is hard to abuse.

So, I think instead of adding them all up and dividing them, it'd be best to just display how people voted for them. We don't show that this game has a 2.9 star rating, we show that it has 8 voting 5 stars, 4 voting 4 stars, 1 voting 2 stars, and 10 voting 0 stars. That way, you can make your own judgement about what the game is worth.

Drawback is that it's hard to simplify into what it's really worth.

You do have a point. I won't rate a game that I don't think deserves less than 4 stars for fear they'll do the same thing to one of my games. And that's not a good way to go about stuff.

I actually give a lot of props to those who DO vote 1 or 2 stars on a game, they're just being honest after all.

This is just an idea... discuss it a little, but what if we gave people the ability to choose what game types they preferred and then that would effect how much voting power they have against games of those types.
It sounds like it could be easily broken, but it also sounds like if the majority of the website takes it seriously, we could outweigh it.

I don't really download that many games anymore anyway and the ones i do download are all 4-5 star games. If a lot of other people on here are like me, then ratings don't really matter, just download count.

It works fine enough for people downloading the game, but just thought it'd be more helpful feedback for those who are getting rated It also caters for both the people who don't want a 0 star rating and those who want it. And it reduces damages from all the 0 star ratings, which the really superb ones get a lot.

Decent idea, but I can't really see what it'd add to the system. It sounds like it has the same effect as the favorites system.

Umm.......The games rating should be based on half user votes and half good reviewer votes(like an admin or something).

Scrap the ratings all together, or have a like/dislike option.

I'd go for a like/dislike option as -Adam- suggested. Maybe leave rating only on the reviews, since there you have to justify your ratings.

But this is what we had before the 5star rating thing... because of that system.

What if you had the ability to buy a golden rating sticker which gave you more DC points for rating and reviewing but it gets revoked if you write too many rotten reviews or don't do it at least half as many times as there are downloads that week, per week. I don't know, I'm just trying to think outside the box.

Idea: How about, in addition to keeping the current rating system, we also allow people to view detailed information about how people voted for the game, as Muz suggested in the first post.

So it would look something like this:

Example Game

|
| | | |
| | | | | |
5 4 3 2 1 0

Overall rating: 2.9 / 5

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that we could just stick a bar graph next to the overall rating to see how the votes are spread out, since the average by itself doesn't really say much.
