Hello.

This is an old habit I've had since I started using computers: All of my games are stored in d:/_games. Same for _music, _photos, _video, etc. I just ignored Windows' My Documents folders when they were introduced in Win95. In each game folder there's a todo.txt and a bunch of other folders like /build, /sfx, /gfx, /screens, and so on. Sometimes I wonder how other people organise stuff. Do you use "My Documents"?

I also have a blank MMF template game file which I use every time I start a new game. It contains "default" settings like debugger off, named layers for GUI, game and background, global events (esc quits, PgUp and PgDn navigate frames) and some better default counters. Just saves me time when I start a new game. Also good for 1 hour competitions!

Anyone else want to share some game dev habits?

I've used Windows since 3.1, and before that I used DOS and an Amiga (can't remember which model)

I didn't organize anything though, I just installed stuff and used the default folders.
I only used my computer for games though, until I got KNP in 97, then I just made a "my games" folder inside the KNP directory.

I started using the My Documents folder when I was using Win98 to store midi's I'd collect from other game's data folders. (Namely all the Lemmings games, and of course other downloaded KNP games)

I don't have a MMF template though, Imma have to start doing that. Great idea!

I just click the new button in mmf and name the first frame "gameplay" and build the engine, after that I finish up the game and make the menu's and add polish last.
I never use global events, behaviors, or layers.

I'm still stuck with some of my KNP habits and never found the time to mess with some of the newer features.
It took me a while to start using scrolling after TGF 1 came out in fact.

The upside is that most of my projects are easy to convert whenever a new runtime comes out. Too bad most of them are half finished abandonware.

Well, I just use global events for a few simple debugging things. I've never used behaviors either. In fact, I don't know when they'd be useful in MMF. Layers are incredibly useful however! If you start using layers, just remember that collisions don't work across layers. Caught me out a few times

I started with TGF, which I'm pretty sure automatically created a Games folder inside the GFactory directory. So now I have a Games folder inside the MMF2 directory. Small experiments get dumped there.

I make a whole folder for projects (usually on my desktop while I'm working on it), since I do sounds and graphics with external programs.

In the past my file and folder organization has been haphazard, but lately I've developed a more standardized system.

And now I feel like I've said I a bajillion times.

I don't really have an organised or clear way of storing resources. When I was in Acoders, I used c:\acoders and started placing subfolders there; then it became c:\0natomic. I eventually placed all game-related things within subfolders in there, such as sound effects, useful formula, engines that I've downloaded since forever from the Clickteam fora, game ideas, inspiration sprites/photos, visual references, professional game scripts and paraphernalia (especially Xenogears, FF), flowchart templates for game stories and so forth. I find it a very useful library or collection.

I've been using a computer since I was like 2--my mother had a multimedia design company at home. I don't remember if there was windows 3.1, but I used dos programs anyway (Animator and 3d studio 2). I got used to the c:\ani and c:\3ds2 folders and stashed everything there. I remember using frontend and .avi animations to make "interactive" movies of a character going through several Monkey Island ripped background screens in html. Lovely garbage. Then, I was around 8 when I discovered K&P, bought it and immediately bought TGF. I started using c:\amcharts, which alluded to a piece of shit "company" I "founded". Unexpectedly, three Swedes joined my feeble intentions; one was Yoshiman (Johan), who eventually also joined Natomic, the other was Aggressor (Martin), and another one whom I can't recall . For some reason, I have the webpage in a hard drive, and the link to the forum still works x) (http://amazingforums.com/forum/AMCHARTS/ ). I totally digressed, didn't I?

I draw absolutely all of my graphics in the MMF2 graphics editor. Even if it's going to be an external file I draw it in MMF2. Most of the time it's all drawn in a seperate MFA to my main game MFA though.
I know that kinda limits me to pixel art but thats all Ive really used so far anyways.

I use http://workflowy.com for my projects , it's the best way to manage your projects/time.

I keep everything on the desktop until I run out of space, and then move it to .../desktop/stuff and then if I start getting name conflicts I create ...desktop/stuff/stuff, and so on - and then eventually I just shove everything in c:/adam
