Greetings. I had a few questions I want to ask all of you. As far as RPGs go, do you like the freedom to have any character equip any weapon? Or should select characters only use a certain weapon?

Clearly the latter is much easier, and at the same time is more personal. A perfect example of this is Chrono Trigger, with everyone using different weapons. Chrono and Frog both use swords in battle, however they are different types of swords. It's not impossable to code/draw Chrono using Frog's weapons and vice versa. However, would that extra work make for a better game?

Another question is the the amount of weapons. A core part of what makes an rpg and rpg is getting better weapons and equipment. But by the end of most rpgs you are carrying around 50+ different weapons of each type. (Assuming you didn't drop or sell the crappy ones thoughout the game.)

My idea is to greatly limit the amount of different weapons within each type, which makes things easier on me and at the same time makes finding/buying new weapons much more important. And/or I may have a weapons upgrade system were you have a starting weapon and it can be improved a few times.

So what are your thoughts on that that? Thanks.

well, i always like being able to use any weapon, that makes things a lot more fun. especially if each character has different skills and such for the same weapon. it just depends on how much time and effort your willing to put into it. i usually think the more content a game has the better, as long as it is well explained, if that makes sense

I like the idea of having fewer-but-upgradeable weapons. This allows the customization that players like, and it keeps inventory down, which both players and coders like.

In terms of who has an opportunity to use them, I would recommend that all characters can use weapons, but some are better at particular weapons more so than others. The character who seems to have a knack for the rapier versus the character who does well while dual-wielding daggers, while one character is excellent with thrown weapons, or a massive bludgeon, or etc. This also allows for some customization beyond the obvious specializations.

The large-bodied "tank" character will most likely do well with a heavy, slow, high-damage weapon; the leaner, acrobatic types will most likely do well with the smaller, quicker weapons. But that doesn't mean a lean waif might not want to smack down with a gigantic club every once in a while...And seeing big fighters with tiny weapons is amusing. However, it's not game-unbalancing.

Honestly, I think the weapon customization part should be more significant a factor than who has an opportunity to use which weapon.
