I originally posted this in the VIP section and then realized that was a horrible place to post it, for various reasons. Here's what I wrote:

Hey people.
Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but here goes.
How about TDC hosts some small competitions, maybe ones that take place during a weekend? I'm thinking something along the lines of Ludum Dare. I guess some would think "well why not just enter Ludum Dare?". I think 4 times a year is too little though. I dunno, I guess I just thought it would be cool. Any thoughts?
And then S-M-R posted this:
I'd totally dig it if we had a "Quickie Contest" every other weekend or so. Here's a potential run-down of the guidelines.
On Saturday at 12:01am GMT, there's a list of themes or potential titles a participant can choose from (a la the Video Game Name Generator, for instance) and one's submission would be due by 12:00pm (that is, noon) GMT on the Sunday of that weekend.
The emphasis is on a quick turnaround on projects, regardless of its completion, progress, or polish. One could argue that there's already something like this out there (Ludum Dare was mentioned, and I'm personally a fan of Glorious Trainwrecks), but whatever...The more, the merrier, says I.
The guidelines should be considered as guidelines only, with nothing hard-and-fast, no disqualifications. It's simply a showcase of quick "game sketches" or whatever from forum participants. This would also prevent people from pissing and moaning about no prizes, as the compos come so fast and furious, the results so out-there and unpredictable, that there's no reason to expect anything beyond bragger's rights. However, I'm sure the compo facilitators could come up with something to provide incentive, especially if collaborating with the active TDC admins.
I'd suggest some kind of leaderboard, just to make it a little bit more interesting (perhaps even a small prize at the end of the "season").
You could organize it on a two week cycle, something like this:
Mon-Fri A - submit themes for next contest; vote for winner of last contest
Sat-Sun A - announce winner of last contest
Mon-Fri B - vote for theme of next contest
Sat-Sun B - announce theme of next contest; start contest!
That seems like a good way to do it I'd be a driving force behind this, but I have too many other projects (both digital and "analog") to be able to commit to it. It's kind of a crappy move to suggest something and then not wanna be the guy behind it but..meh..I'm sure many of you can relate
I'm totally interested in helping officiate/facilitate this. It's high time there's an even better reason to follow TDC than just the Projects page, and this could be it.
As for a prize at the end of the season, I'd like to find some way to connect it to forum participation.
- Comments posted about games
- Trophies given to game developers
- Reviews
- ???
Those who contribute could vote for more than one game, or have their vote count more than once...Like if someone writes a review for a game, and then uses the points they earned from the review to give the game developer a trophy. If someone writes a review for several different games in that week's contest, each game would earn a vote.
Even posting more comments on TDC will eventually allow someone to give a trophy to a game developer for the game they made.
I like Sketchy's ideas, too. Winners from previous weeks can coordinate with the compo facilitators to determine the next week's theme or game titles. The game developer with the most reviews by the end of the year/compo period earns a cash prize, like US$0.10 per trophy or review they received from other users throughout the compo period.
Sounds very good, though i'd only be able to enter when i'm free of all my other chores. I like the idea of random name generator theme every competition
It does NOT take much effort or commitment to make a game of this calibre (not to single you out, Marko). The bar for entry is set very low for this sort of thing.
