I just realised something... the best sites in the world don't even use real ratings/points anymore. Even if they do, they're meaningless, like Worth 1000's ( www.worth1000.com ) post rating system.
Why? Because they bring nothing but trouble. C'mon, there's been complaints about people who are 'misjudged' because of their ratings. And what about those crappy games with absolutely nothing in them? They're probably just there so that the guy who put them there would get a higher rating.
What do we get from abolishing ratings?
1. Less member interaction (though not all member interaction is good, anyway)
2. No more feudal-era status levels (which isn't really a bad thing either)
3. Less to reward in competitions (which brings in more sincerity, less quality, and less competitors)
But then again, do you all still want to deal with those crappy games that nobody in their right mind would play? I'm sure some of you admins (especially Circy ) have gotten pissed off by them all too often in the past.
Disclaimer: Any sarcasm in my posts will not be mentioned as that would ruin the purpose. It is assumed that the reader is intelligent enough to tell the difference between what is sarcasm and what is not.
That'll lead to even more discrimination. At least with the usual DC points, even the legends are considered 'newbie'. If the points were actually accurate, well... you can guess the elitism that'll bring.
We need a DC that gives justice to all, without any discrimination or oppression!

dc points are not a judge of skill level. argh, i'm getting tired saying this: it's a judge of your participation at the site. i think they could be reworded; e.g. "Newbie" -> "New on DC", normal member could stay the same, "expert member" maybe to "high participant", just to stop all the confusion. but if we didn't have them we wouldn't know our Smebys from our... well, our normal people
Shut your pie hole Pyry you stupid newbie... go back to Newtopia!

Ratings are the stupidest thing ever. If people want a popularity contest, let them do it themselves - otherwise they'll complain to the admins that their rating is wrong and they're much more 1337 than da n00b f00 who submitted stupid quizzes and a game starring a bouncing foetus.
A rating that tells you how good you are at click products would never work, one reason is alot of guys dont even post there good work on TDC, you look at there profile and look and they have no amazing games up, you think they suck when its not true. I judge people on how many explination points you use!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol jk
We are the music makers, we are the dreamers of dreams...
I say lose the ratings altogether. I don't see how a note of participation makes any difference, there are plenty of high-ranking members who are complete morons. If you look at the code-it forum, newbies come up with the right answers as often as anyone else. The well-known members are well-known, that's it. I don't need a rating to tell me that.
A "Member for X months" does the job just as well, and far more impartially.
I comply with Radix. The rating system is completely useless for most members. I newer use it for anything as it means nothing. So what if you have a high "participation" level. That does not mean youve done anything good. Also helpful posts in the forum means nothing acording to the rating system.
The amount of processing time and database space far outruns the usefulness. Simply dumb it. A "member for X months" or even more simple "member since xx/xx/xxxx" would be much better. That would show how long a member had been a member and would most likely tell something about the standard to expect.
If you knew, I would have to kill you...

no, they must stay! we need prizes to give for the compos
LoL Ashman, that's the best thing I ever saw!!!
First you were like: HAHAHA
Then Pete were like: HAHAHAHAHA
Then you were like: NOOOOOO
Then Pete was like: HAHAHAHA
Then I was like: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Go Pete! Ratings rule! Without ratings, the competition that exists in the real world of game dev would end! Two different ratings( one for participation and one for skill) would be a good idea though.
Ratings make me sick! It's so rude! Its like putting a label on people, you could be king dick of clicking but only just find this site, sign up then be treated like shit because you look like newbie when trying to give people advice.
Yeah, how dare you degrade newbies by labelling me one. How insulting for the poor newbies. We were all newbies once Pete, can't you just leave them alone! THEY DON'T DESERVE THIS SHABBY TREATMENT!!! SHAME ON YOU!

He told Pyry to go back to newtopia so he got his rating reset to newbie... I dont know why he has done worse stuff... I mean he calls shadow caster a wanker everyday...
The points aren't really that important for me, but it's not like the rating system is much of a nuisance anyway. I don't recall seeing much people here who really act in a elitist way due to their rating and people who really act this way get ignored sooner or later anyway.
As been mentionned in the topic already, the rating just shows how much this user submitted to Daily Click and shouldn't be used to identify a member as being an expert/newbie to the entire click community. For instance, I'm an expert member with a star besides the name, yet I only submitted 4 games. I only got up to that rating by submitting an handful of reviews as well as 2 articles, so this means nothing toward my status as a general click community member. If you don't like the way the rating system works, none of you are forced to take notice of people's rating.
Besides, you should be thankful about the current rating system, since the first one that was used on Daily Click was something you could really bitch on. Your member rating was given to you by all community members around willing to do so, so you could imagine the mess that it would spring out at moments. Most people just gave 1s or 10s to almost everyone for no real reason. Now THAT was hell.

The current system is good, all that needs to be added is extra points for extra participation (for example making good games).
Thinking about it, I have done loads for this site and never gotten DC-points for participating (well, by that I mean fixing various security holes in the site).

yes, paul, the (sometimes incorrect) assumption being that the more you add, the more you are participating. i admit it could do with some tweaking, but nothing's perfect.
Um... in case you guys haven't noticed, half of the crap games out there are submitted purely for DC points (the other half by innocent newbies who don't know better). And the 'low participants' (e.g. the ones who submit only one really long game) still keep to the really low ratings.
So basically, someone could just submit 10 1-hour games that are barely decent (ala Invasion of the Muz) and the admins still should accept them. I don't see how this could be of any advantage to anyone, specially not the admins.
It's a noble enough idea, but it's been abused too much and will continue to be abused even more.
