Yesterday i dug out Grand Theft Auto the original, and it was so much more fun than GTA3 and Vice City in my opinion, and i played GTA3 and VC straight after playing GTA1. Vice Citys fun, but fore me is not up to the original's fun factor, sure it might be btter technologically, but i do not think its as playable.
I also dug out my N64 and my snes and played some games on them, and again i found them more fun than their modern day variants.
Is it just me?, or are all the recent~ish games getting really boring, Splinter Cell, Rainbow 6 3, and Halo i do not find fun IMHO, the last shooters i found fun was TimeSplitters 2 and Serious Sam 2.
Total agreement here... nothing beats classics! Secret of Mana is of course the greatest game of all time.

I do agree with this actually. I never feel motivated to complete a modern game (Playstation and above), but when I had my trusty MegaDrive, Master System and Amiga, I was totally dedicated to try finishing a game. I felt a sense of satisfaction when I did so, but these modern games, I dont feel that satisfaction. Maybe thats why Im not as dedicated, or maybe it's because I've gotten older and started to lose interest in games. Tough call.
Games are becomming to easy. just Take Wind waker for example, Gnondorf was the easiest boss in the whole game. i think they should put more thought into making it more difficult.
So why doesn't everyone just play SNES games? Think of the money you'll save!
Seriously, I don't think there's much credence to this argument. First of all, I know a lot of you grew up with the SNES, so it's got a lot more nostalgic value for you. Yes, it had a lot of great games, but it also had a lot of lousy games, too. Mortal kombat II was a big deal at the time, but if you play it now, it's more or less a joke, much like the more recent additions to the series. Anyone ever play Stunt Race FX? I thought that was pretty cool at the time, but by today's standards, the framerate makes this thing virtually unplayable. And there are a lot of instances like this, where you think a game was so cool, and then you go back and play it, and realize how bad it really is.
Now, sure, the SNES also had games which are still fun to play. I was disappointed by Mario Kart: Double Dash because it was significantly less fun than the SNES original. Sure, it looks a million times better, and technology has allowed the designers to do more with the game. However, that didn't translate into it being more fun, but that doesn't mean old games are necessarily more fun. For example, I think Animal Crossing is a great newer game. I like GTA: VC a lot. A lot of this is a matter of personal preference, but I think there are just as many classic games on my new systems as there were on my Atari 2600, which is to say, not very many.
There are many parts to the problem. So many things need to go right to make a great game: you have to start with a lot of knowledge of what has made other games great, plus the vision to see what features will appeal to people, plus, of course, the talent to do it all. You need time to develop the game, and most games today get rushed to market before they're ready, and console games do so without much capacity for fixing them once problems arise. Also, you need maketing money to bring your product to people's attention. Jagged Alliance 2 was a great game, but most people didn't know about it here in the U.S. just because Sir-Tech didn't get a good publishing deal, and now they're virtually out of business.
Anyway, all I'm saying is that new games aren't so bad. It's just that the bad ones are so fresh in our minds. In ten years, everyone will have forgotten about the Rebel Strikes of the world and say, "Man, do you remember TimeSplitters 2? That game was awesome. I miss shooting monkies in the face."
Defenestrator is actually correct. There were just as many bad games back in the "good old days" as today. In fact, the NES had an EXTREME amount of horribly designed games. Even many of the NES classics would be trashed if released today, simply because game design has improved so much.
When the SNES rolled around, the play control and level design began to improve greatly, so the SNES actually had a much better ratio of good games to bad games than the NES. But still, it had plenty of horrible games. Here are the two REAL reasons why people argue that games today are not "fun anymore".
1. You are getting older. Simple really, when you are younger you are more easily amused. Even when you go back and play the old games you may think they are better than they actually are because of the nostalgic value.
2. It's getting harder and harder to come up with fresh ideas. This is not the game designers faults, obviously. People who have been playing games for awhile want something new but it's getting harder and harder to deliver. You won't find young gamers complaining about "lack of innovation" for obvious reasons.
It has nothing to do with games getting "worse". Kids who grow up on the Gamecube will probably be saying how games are not "fun anymore" ten years from now. They will be bragging about classics such as Metroid Prime and Wind Waker.
99 percent chance that the above post is 100 percent correct.
Most recent games are just a bunch of crap covered up to look nice. Legend of Mana, the Final Fantasy series, Sonic the Hedgehog(Genesis), and the old Super Mario games are awesome.
Maybe we're all just getting too old for this shit!
