New Feature: Forum Edit Button
News posted 1st August, 2003 by ShadowCaster
It's been asked for and asked for more than any other feature, but you needn't ask any longer... The forum now has a handy Edit link! You can edit posts that you've made only on the current day (to prevent people making changes after too many replies have already been made).

If you have any problems, or discover any bugs, please be sure to tell me here.

Edited posts will automatically have an Edit icon appear at the bottom of the post, along with a short message informing other users that the post has been updated.

~Mike

Additional: The system has changed so that you can update your post at any time as long as there are no replies after yours. I think this is a better way of doing things since if a post is changed then subsequent posts will always be relevant.

Additional: The download system now asks you what you think of a game while it is downloading, hopefully to encourage more people to use the new voting system.

Additional: By popular demand you can now view the download URL on the download page again.

way hey! finally. nice job shadow.

how are you supposed to know what a game is like before it's downloaded?

Posted by Pete Nattress 1st August, 2003

ADODB.Recordset error '800a0cc1' Item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal. /downout.asp, line 87 this happens on half of the links i tried.

Fixed... plus a new feature as well (see news) :)

It displays so people know they can vote, and once they've installed the game if the page is already displayed then I think more people will vote.

Nice, but didn't many other boards had this feature already? And is dc just behind with his boards?

Akira: Asked and answered.

Um, doesn't the page kinda stress people to just download a game? I hardly know anyone (in real life) who leaves a page open when they have nothing to see in it, especially if they're using bulky little Internet Explorer. That new voting thing would only encourage people to vote on a game according to their initial perception. It happens enough already on the GOTW poll. At least leave some message in bold reminding them to look at the game before voting. Thanks for the edit thing, though...

Well said Muz. I have a pet hate of people who post "downloading now" or "looks good" underneath games, and there are already far too many of them without an extra voting system. Although your motives are just Shadow, it basically encourages prejudicial opinion-giving, based on no more information than anyone else can see by reading the description themselves.

"how can you rate a game if it isn't finished downloading?" you foob, I just asked that... Wouldn't it be best if the 'what do you think of the game you just downloaded' window was a small popup? say, 100 by 200 pixels with no toolbars? that'd make it a lot easier to use

Kris: I agree with you on the pop-up window thing, but people might have a pop-up blocker thing.

I'm just trying to answer the call of those who are saying "it would be better if more people voted"... suggestions welcome.

Hurrah for Shadowcaster! Hurrah for Pringles! Hurrah for the person doing the voiceover for the British phone service 123. "The time - sponsored by Accurist - is eleven minutes past eight PM."
