FINALLY... Xmas Compo 2003 Results
News posted 25th January, 2004 by Pete Nattress
God, this competition has been a right royal pain in the backside for me. But after several rather large hiccups I am now very pleased to finally be announcing the winners. I will send all this information to Shadowcaster so he can get it up on the "proper page" ASAP, but for now, make do with this.

Unfortunately, Sejj appears to have lost interest in doing this competition, which meant I had to find someone else to co-judge with. I in fact invited Chris Street (Circy) and Paul Masterson (Shab) to donate their opinions, and they both obliged, much to my gratitude. Each judge gave marks out of a possible 100 to each game (50 for gameplay, 20 for graphics, 10 for sound/music, 10 for presentation and an extra 10 for whether they considered the entrant to be a winter sport or not, as per the rules). I consider these guys to be mature and sensible which is why I asked them. Our marks were then added together to give each game a mark out of 300. Then obviously, the game with the highest score won.

So, I hear you cry, enough with the bull, who won!? Here are the top 3 entrants:

First Place - 218 / 300
It's Tom Carlier (Yuyu) with his very nicely designed Freestyle Santa, which impressed Circy and myself with its well drawn graphics and smooth gameplay. Congrats to Tom!

Second Place - 196 / 300
Paul Jeffries takes silver with the technically brilliant DownTime, which also attracted the judge's attention with its own attempt at pseudo 3D effects. Struggling gameplay problems kept this from grabbing the top spot.

Third Place - 182 / 300
A well deserved prize for Lasagnasoft with their game Santa goes Tossing before Christmas which, although simple, had its appeal in the form of addictiveness and nifty graphics. And you have to love the risqué title.

Sadly, not every game wins a prize, and the following are the remaining entrants who, for one reason or another, didn't reach the top three.

4th: Super Snowboard by Caspar Raaarup (CsaR) - 171 points
5th: Snowball Showdown by Hernan Zhau - 153 points
6th: Shovel!!! by Paolo Tajè (Monkey Soft) - 155 points
7th: Xmas Xtreme by Andrea Galvani (PeggioSoft) - 138 points
8th: Snow Ride by Beejay Urzo - 132 points
9th: The First Annual Reindeer Games by Kenley Brown - 125 points
10th: Obstacle Snowboarding by Nuutti Hölttä- 120 points
11th: The Vasa Race by Niklas Heikkilä- 115 points
12th: High Voltage Snowboarding by Alex Filipowski- 74 points

These results are not definite yet but they are as good as. I've checked all the maths and it appears to add up, but if anyone wants to check then please do. If you want to read what exactly the judges said about the games you can find our opinions HERE for Circy, HERE for Shab and HERE for me.

Well, that's that over for this year. I will be in touch with the winners about prizes etc in the near future; please be patient. Also I must stress that arguing with the judges will get you absolutely nowhere. The only way these results will change is if there is some addition error somewhere. Pleas, excuses, etc will not be listened to.

Finally, I'd like to say a big CONGRATS to the winners and a big THANK YOU to Shab and Circy for Judging and of course to Clickteam for providing the lovely prizes.

Thanks for reading.

Good job to all that entered, hope you guys had fun.

Last Comment. Obstacle Snowboarding would ROCK if you would work on the graphics a bit more. Ok, a lot more, but I love the game, it's challenging as all hell.

worry not alex, i know too what it is like to come last in an xmas competition! :P ;) shab, you've been de-shabed. and all the links should work now. if i've spelt your name wrong then... live with it, people spell my name wrong all the bloody time! just kidding, post here and i'll correct it.

Posted by Knudde (Shab) 25th January, 2004

you spell your own name wrong too.

Alex, revamp HV Snowboarding, it could be very good if you put more time into it. And change the control scheme, using 1 and 2 for tricks streches your hand too much.

jd, FSS takes some getting used to, but i started really enjoying it after playing a bit.

by a whole 1k, right behind Shovel. Alex, starting early is not the key experience and desire to make a good game are the key. Working on HVS would give you more experience. Find some friends to test new features out. Combined, my friends have played a total of about 10 hours of Noir, and given me advice on things, which I change, and then make them play it all over again. The main thing is, does the game pose a challenge that is fun and last for a while? That's the critical error of your game, it's waaay too short, and it's not a whole lot of fun, yet. Keep working on it man.

Whoah! I would change the Click convention cd with Mmf 1.5... :P

Posted by GFX software 25th January, 2004

Ah... what is that thing about tdc points?

Posted by Knudde (Shab) 25th January, 2004

What are you talking about GFX, what DC points?

Posted by yuyu 25th January, 2004

I'll admit Freestyle Santa is abit messy. There wasn't much time to make it because I found out about the competition late. But if you get used to the controls its actually pretty decent.

Frestyle santa is pretty good, really weird controls though, but the Downtime was my fav.

This comp was a joke.

HAHAHAHAHahahahhahaa.... This is one of my comments on the game... "It's winter, there's one sport (racing) then a homicidal rampage on some elves." lol...oh well it was fun :D

Posted by yuyu 26th January, 2004

If you the Freestyle Santas controls are the wrong way around then just turn invert steering on in the controls.

I won this last year and all I got was some dodgy DC points... what a gyp! Congrats fellas, btw.
