Andi's TDC Goldmine #3 - Butterfly 660
News posted 27th January, 2004 by Andi Smith
Welcome to my third TDC Goldmine! This week I'm hot on the trail of a awesome platform shooter from yesteryear since Commando has been released this week, and Furry has made a reappearance at The Daily Click. So what could I be talking about? Gunner 3? That's a well-known classic.. how about something a little more obscure?

Syndicate Studios aren't ones to hype up their games, so when this one arrived from nowhere on to the Planet Klik submissions (the community site I was working on at the time) we were all pleasantly surprised by how damn good the game was. Butterfly 660 doesn't promise lots of fancy weapons, moves or enemies - but it does have a really engrossing plotline that will keep you playing and playing.
Comments from the Author:"Butterfly 660 is an odd combination: an Action Platformer with a thick RPG-like plot which unravels itself as you play the game. The engine is simple, (you can jump, duck, shoot, reload etc) but the game play and the plot line is not. It is a twist on traditional alien-hunting games with puzzles to solve, bosses to beat and the elaborate plot to discover. Butterfly 660 contains numerous levels, lots of weird and wonderful aliens and full-length cut scenes, as well as being rather long."

As good as Commando or Gunner 3? Well, I'll leave that one for you to decide!

So what do you think guys? Better, as good as or worse than Gunner 3 and/or Commando?

It's really quite amazing - the plot is one of the best I've seen in a Click game. And it was also the first game that I ever reviewed. <¦-)

It's a pretty good game. It does have flaws, though (it uses the standard platform engine and doesn't really debug it well).

... Are you all nuts? The story was the only thing that kept me playing, but the gameplay is pretty poor

Yes, we are all nuts, but that's irrelevant - it shows just how important a good plot is to a game.

it's not perfect but it's pretty impressive with regards to presentation. gameplay could be better, as circy said, but this is a great example of how to use a story effectively. nice one andi.

The plot was great. The game was far too easy. Like Circy, I only played because of the story. Nice game, but it has no replayability.

Do Grenade Tennis 2 or Death City next. Those games were awesome.

Thank you very much again Andi, you've just redirected me into memory lane. ^^

Oooh! Our ancient game has been briefly plucked out of obscurity again! :D Cheers, Andi.

I love this game. It's had so much thought put into the plot, and the Outtakes when you finish the game are brilliant (the one where Butterfly falls onto the Board Of Directors' table and is blasted to hell, then the last guy throws his gun at him is particularly funny). I also love the cutscenes, especially the one where Butterfly launches himself through the ground and blasts two guards in slow-motion before his feet even hit the ground. This game has so many nice little touches (back-flipping over the large creature, for example), and the last boss fight was one of the most original I've ever participated in. Gotta love the psychic powers and floating chairs! This definately deserves its spot in the gold mine.
