Mode 7 Ex
News posted 21st May, 2002 by ShadowCaster
Marcello has just released a new version of his Mode 7 extension: Mode 7 Ex! For those of you who don't know, Mode 7 is an extension for MMF which allows you to import 2D maps into MMF and convert them to 3D environments...

In the simplest form, the term mode 7 refers to a graphics mode on the Super Nintendo (tm) system used to, among other things, create pseudo 3d games. F-Zero or Mario Kart are examples of several commercial Nintendo games that use mode 7. The games turned a flat 2d map into a 3d environment.

The mode 7 ex extension puts this power in your hands, making it extremely easy to create maps and move around them. You can load images into mode 7 ex and take them for a spin in just minutes!

After the initial public beta release of the Mode 7 extension, many suggestions were brought forth, there was a definite need to continue development on the basic Mode 7 concept. Striving to go beyond the basic idea, I decided to integrate some neat concepts into mode 7 ex.

The new version contains some new spiffy features, bug-fixes, and improved stability. Among the changes are:
  • Internal Image Support
  • Auto-redraw support
  • Height map/voxel support
  • Wrapping, Fog, Interpolation and mip-mapping
  • Heaps More!

On TGF you van use my last raycasting 3d engine. It's free, open source and had some good comments and lots of downloads (239). You can find it in the "Files" page. If I was still an amateur SH I should have used to make a game. Try it anyway (it's just one mega).

I was a bit dissapointed with the examples. If this is such a powerful tool it surely didn't show off in the examples.

It needs a higher height map, less lag, different blending options and more precise heightmapping support....or something.

Erik: All of the examples were made in under a couple hours. Feel free to make your own or expand on the existing ones.

I can't open the examples :( Some error which says that it was saved under an older version.. :(

If you actually read the documentation you'll see that they require MMF 1.5! So unless someone wants to port them back, you'll have to upgrade...

You probably have MMF 1.2 I believe these examples were created with MMF 1.5
