Talking Topic #18 - When developing a game, what drives you to continue it?
News posted 23rd May, 2007 by The Chris Street
When developing a game, what drives you to continue it?

This is the discussion for this weeks Talking Topic!

Do you enjoy making games? Do you do it for the fun, or do you feel that you SHOULD make a game because people have high expectations? Maybe you feel you need to better your previous works, or maybe you just want to finish your first game in years? What motivates you?

Please submit your opinions in the comments thread. Remember to keep things clean, and please respect the opinions of other individuals. And, if you have any ideas for the Talking Topic, feel free to mail them to me! Happy debating!

It should also be noted that, since I'm running out of ideas, this weeks Talking Topic is very likely to be the final one, unless more ideas are sent!

Half way through making Sam I got into Castlevania and wanted to bring in a giant overworld level instead of the map. Then I wanted backtracking. Then I released Sam and started work on Tormishire .
I don't know what's motivating me to work on my game now. It's just something fun to make and I'm experimenting with everything I learnt whilst at university. And experimenting with music since I bought a USB Midi cable for my keyboard.

Support from my internet bum chums. And being able to make some graphics to some kinda standard. Also, other people's projects motivates me hell of alot.

Need to show people what I can do really at some stage - show them of my intellect haha Having started a game often drives me to finish it.

It's the factors as to why developments get abandoned which is more interesting - and possibly an idea for next weeks' topic too.

I don't know. I've been working on the same game since early February, without getting carried away with any other projects, which I think is quite remarkable considering that fact that I haven't released anything big in over a year.

The only thing that drives me is the fact of people enjoying the game. but lately I have had big bumbps in my road so I can't finish like any project

Good comments and a like of my own code.

If a project gets too messy, or the coding isn't up to my par; then I scrap and start anew. The problem is that my par usually goes up while I'm developing.

Indeed. comments.

Also, my code needs to be dynamic enough so I can easily change things without sifting through layers of crap.

My games are just a showcase for my art. And people are retarded enough to expect me to make games and download it. yay.

Nothing.

When things start going well and fitting together, that's when I get motivation to carry it on more, adding more pieces to the puzzle that makes a game.

Motivation also comes from figuring out problems, both in design and development. Making things more awesome than they were is always a good drive

What demotivates me? Having tested the game so much that it gets boring - I start to think that other people will get bored of it, too, hence why I've only released one (rushed) game

I have an idea, make me admin.

Posted by Tim 23rd May, 2007

To qualify for being admin shouldn't volunteer themselves and be selfless... probably

I think what motivates me to continue a game is how cool I think it would be to play a game like the ones I make. That is, if i didn't know that I had made them. The thing is I keep getting new ideas that keep me from finshing the old ones.

...............What motivates you?

wel i always liked playing games. started out on nintendo and then tru the rest of the consoles and pc.

thru al those years of gaming i missed something
and that was being able to make my own game or help crating a game with others
just becouse the industrie doesnt allow people who now nothing about c+ etc

but with these programs such as tgf and mmf it is posible to make them on your own and thats a real driving factor, a Motivation every one here knows about. having fun with wat u create, the better it gets the more fun u have. thats wy playing is so much fun, ..and when u create u play

Nothing at the moment. Hence the reason why nothing I've been planning is finished.

Only the enjoyment of making the game motivates me. Far too often i just get bored or get stuck somewhere that makes the process a chore.

My motivation for making games is

1. I really like the ideas I come up with, and since I am a gamer, I would love to play them. That is something that really keeps me going.

2.I want to use the games I make as a portfolio so I can get hired at a game development company.

3. I love game design

I actually enjoy leaving a game alone for a week then just playing it. It feels quite... good! In a Venom kind of way.
cuz it always felt like enjoying your own game was like laughing at your own jokes.

I was born to make games, it's in my blood.
Soo blood motivates me.

Fame and money Actually it's faith in the game and to show it to the world

Usually a good plan is motivating for me.
As when I get like half way or more through a game I become unmotivated but when I have already made a plan it helps me through.

Posted by Muz 24th May, 2007

Boredom. Which is why my games don't get finished anymore

And sometimes I get a good idea, the motivation stops once I realize that someone else has thought of it.

Posted by Muz 25th May, 2007

Oh and schedules, just as long as they're not impossibly tight. Nothing's more motivating than realizing you have limited time to do something

If I really enjoy playing my game then that is really motivational for me.

On some games I've made, playtesting has been a real chore, but lately I've actually been really enjoying my game.

What also motivates me is playing a specific game for inspiration. This week I played system shock 2 for the first time (and finished it) and it had some great inspiration for my game.

Money.... for me it's not a hobby anymore, there are other things I can do for a hobby that interest me. As soon as my games stop making money, I'll quit, it's as simple as that. Until now that hasn't happened, so I'll continue to make new games. Once my games stop selling, there's no point in going on and I'll have to find some other source of income.

Posted by alastair john jack 26th May, 2007

Freeware.. The only thing that drives me is making things that I know will be free. I will continue to make games for free, and if that doesn't happen, I'll quit.

Starting new projects motivates me,and that's kind of a problem... Right now i'm working on the most promising game so far. Since i never finnish my games, i'm planning to release a demo soon. I think that would motivate me!

I like working on games with someone else at the same time...
