We all talk about the good old days of klikking, where development was not necessarily about making a profit but rather just for fun. We remember the days of getting excited about klik games. Who remembers the hype and excitement surrounding Eternal Daughter?
These days are not as prevalent as they used to be. Certainly at TDC member numbers have dwindled and user activity has declined somewhat.
So I've decided to try and inject some nostalgia at TDC by trialling a new idea. If it's popular enough I shall endeavour to continue it. I'm starting a new YouTube series called The TDC Archives which showcases various klik games of the past. Hopefully fond memories will be rekindled and we are inspired to enjoy making games, rather than seeing the whole development as a chore.
A Klik-and-Play game is the first to be featured. You may have heard of it. Mr Malibus was created before the turn of the 21st century and pushed K&P to its limits. As a platformer it can be a little crude and buggy, but if you can find it, it's worth a look (assuming it works on your machine!)
UPDATE: I've uploaded this game for all to enjoy. I converted a while ago in MMF, but you probably won't be able to get past Level 4. Here it is anyway for your pleasure - CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD MR MALIBUS
Great! My first introduction to klik games came from a shareware disk I bought at a computer store. Sadly I lost the disk but there were many great klik games on it like this one. Since they were all open source I learned alot just by going through their code!
Great work, Chris! I never played this particular game, but I was an avid user of KnP and the fact that the developer could push it to do these things it wasn't designed for is pretty awesome. Love the commentary too. One game I did play from the KnP era that was equally impressive was Elk. Wonder if you've got that lying around somewhere?
I enjoyed this video so much Chris I thought I'd log back in and write a comment. Good job mate, I better get back into finishing Block Master one of these days. Good to see the sites still a round
Another game I'd like to see, if you happen to have it, was an arena-shooter style Evil Dead game. It was corny and the graphics were only one step up from stick figures, but I enjoyed it back in the day! I have no idea how widely circulated it was though, I found it on some random KnP site AGES ago.
