Competition: OMG YAY UPDATE
News posted 1st July, 2002 by ShadowCaster
Ok, because of all the complaints I've been getting about the "open source" requirement for the competition, I've spoken with Clickteam and we have decided not to release the source code to your games you submit to the competition! Hooray! Nor will part of the marking criteria be based on the code of your game (unless, of course, it is buggy). HOWEVER, we will still require you to submit your source code to us. This is because Clickteam will not run any compiled EXE files on their computers, as someone could easily exploit the File object, for example. Rest assured, your games will be compiled before Clickteam release them.

Now, stop with the emails already :)

So if we send in the sorce-code, will you compile it before its seen anywere else? or do we need to send the compiled game as well?

Posted by Joshtek 1st July, 2002

no, they can compile it :) but you want to compile it before giving to them..not to give themthe compield version but to see if its under 50mb :)

YAY! So does this mean it doesn't have to be fully commented either?!?!

"Nor will part of the marking criteria be based on the code of your game." If I didn't get everything completely wrong, that means you don't have to write comments... right?

I hope so.

It doesn't mean comments aren't still helpful to speed up the process of the making of your game and help you to understand what your old code does.

Yea, they are, but usually when I write comments, they are only so I can understand em, they aren't descriptive...

Damn, after all that clean coding I did too ;) Ah well, at least now I'm assured nobody's going to reverse-engineer our high-score encoding..! :3

Posted by danjo 1st July, 2002

besides - i thought ALL the complaints would be more about the POP-UP ad's you now have

Hey guys :D Glad to see everyone's happy now :D I've put a lot of work into this (probebly more than you realise) so it's nice to get some positive feedback. Ok... just to answer a couple of questions: * No, you do not need to write comments anymore... unless you want to, of course :) * The zipped source code needs to be less than 50mb, not the compiled EXE file * Clickteam will compile your games for you once they have checked out the game to make sure it doesnt contain any malicious code. You do not need to submit 2 files :) That would defeat the purpose, as the compiled file could be different to the source code you send us ;) ~Mike

Oh yeah, and if you have any questions it's better to ask via email, as I check that a lot more often :D
