Viruses
News posted 24th November, 2002 by Shen
There have been a couple cases lately of downloads having to be deleted because viruses have been found in the zip files. You must do a virus check on the game files before uploading, and if possible, after downloaded (some viruses may lurk on the free web host servers).

I understand that most of the time the uploader didn't deliberately attach a virus to the files, and most people don't do another test after downloading. But if you continue to upload infected files after warnings, then you may well face a ban.

Thank you.

bloody internet

Your laziness to help the community is overwhelming. I don't even think you'll need to upload a virus to get banned with that additude.

What, being banned for uploading a virus isn't fair? I think it is. Virus-scan your files.

Posted by Buster 24th November, 2002

chicken, whats wrong with you? and what are you talking about!? Your not gonna waste your time checking your own files for virus's. You should get banned if you don't have an IQ over 6.

US BITCHING ABOUT CHECKING! I quote! "screw you, im not gunna waste my time checking my own files for viruses"

You get a warning first don't you? What's your problme chicken? Don't scan until you're warned. Once you submit a virus, you get a warning, THEN you scan your programs until you know where the virus came from.

Why not just scan any file before putting at the DC? It should take like 20 seconds. If you can't be bothered scanning your whole computer then don't.

If you have Norton Antivirus, you can add a button on the top of your explorer/folder displays so you only have to select the file to scan, click the button, and within around 2 seconds it'll report whether or not it contains a virus or not. At least Shen is being nice about it, I'd probably ban the user without a warning just for their stupidity.

Norton actually lets you just right-click a file and virus scan it directly, and it only takes about 2 seconds to do. If you think spending 2 seconds scanning a file (and it is only 2 seconds) is a 'waste' of your time, I hate to think how little time you must spend on your games, Chicken. Not everyone has virus apps running in the background (resource munching beasts that they are), so most people's systems won't warn the second a virus is downloaded. Why should everyone virus scan purely because one person can't be bothered?

Posted by Shen 25th November, 2002

Yeah, Norton flashes up a message that there's a virus and puts it into quarantine if a file is infected. Besides, I also do a manual virus scan anyway. I'm being nice about it because there isn't a warning on the add download page about scanning before and after uploading. Do it once and you'll get a warning, ignore the warning and you'll be banned. Oh, and chicken14528: 'you all have virus fighting software yet you still are all bitchy about checking' isn't my point - some people don't have virus checking software and I was encouraging them to get some.

I switch Norton's autoscanner off to save resources, I know alot of people do.

Paul: If any games of his get uploaded with viruses on he'll be banned for uploading a virus and ignoring the warnings. Jon: Get MMF then :P

You shouldn't have to check the files for viruses when uploaded to a web server. The responsibility is completely on for example brinksters side. Btw, don't people get web space from their internet provider. I do, I got 50 megs from Telia with mine, that's a service most ISP's provide. At least in Sweden. It's part of what you pay for, should be obligatory when subscribing for a internet connection. (If your'e not using one of those free modem isp things...)

Three words.... Chicken - Foot - Mouth!! lol, Well now we're all better....lets all learn from this experience....don't tell admins to kiss your ass!!

I agree with Nioreh.

Posted by Jusargh 26th November, 2002

This is pathetic. Of course you have to check your own files before uploading them.

Posted by Tigerworks 26th November, 2002

Of course. Imagine the resources, time, effort, processing and costs for an ISP or FREE webserver (which has even less of those to spare) to check EVERY SINGLE file that gets given to them, when they get probably thousands every day. It's not hard. One person can scan and noone downloading has to, or one person can choose to not scan, and up to a thousand people have to. It is NOT anyone else's responsibility, if you put a file up onto the web that file is YOUR responsibility, and if it contains a virus that is your problem, and you shouldn't make hundreds of people get infected because of your laziness. Viruses can muck up TGF and MMF especially, so weird unexplainable bugs could mean viruses.

Now chicken there is no need to get all angry about this. How freakin hard is it to virus scan a file. To protect other members computers. I think you should take everyones advice and stop being a tool. And virus scan your bloody files.

Posted by Phredreeke 27th November, 2002

What I meant, and I'm sure Nioreh meant too was that we shouldn't have to check the files after they've been uploaded. Of course we should check them before we upload them.
