Did I ever mention how much I love Spore for the PC? In case you didn't know, it basically lets you build anything from alien creatures, to spaceships, buildings, and vehicles just by dragging and dropping individual parts and pieces together. Using Spore, I've been able to build a model for the karts that I'll be drawing for this game.
The model itself is pretty rough because I only intend to use it as a guide. What I've been doing is taking screenshots of the kart in Spore at slightly different angles and shrinking them down. Once I have all of the rotations I need, I'll proceed to redraw each frame in my cutout style (hence the "paper" in Paper Kart).
The karts will have a total of 40 directions of rotation. Once I've finished them, then I can start drawing characters to stuff on top of them. :3
EDIT: Ended up with 44 directions in total. Here's a spinny GIF animation of them all:
This looks really interesting.
Seems like a pretty big task drawing all the karts and players frame by frame but it makes the quality better, I'm sure.
Once I have some screenshots up and I get the core physics finalized, I'd definitely want some help with track building. If everything works out the way I want it to, players will be able to import their own custom tracks by drawing them in MS Paint, Photoshop, etc, along with height and wall maps. We'll have to see thought - I don't wanna set the bar too high this early on.
Would be sad to waste the first good mode7 racing game by not having multiplayer. If you ever need help with the multiplayer, I can (to some extent) help you.
