Everyone does a breakout game eventually. It's like death and taxes. However, this one - which is my fifth production for the site - has a difference. 20 years after the Space Invaders were defeated, a wormhole opened in the once peaceful world of Breakout, and now it's up to Paddle to defend the world from the Breakout Invaders!

Well, maybe writing a plot for a breakout game's a bit of a mistake. Anyway, this Breakout game combines the standard ball movement with custom detectors to create an improved ball system - you won't have to mindlessly bat the ball around hoping it might just hit that last brick here. Additionally, you can pick up weapons to more efficiently destroy the blocks and the UFOs.

Everything is explained in the Help within the game, but here are the basic controls:

Mouse left/right: Move paddle
Left Mouse Button: Fire weapon
Right Mouse Button: Launch ball/Detonate Scatter Bomb

Music is taken from all over the place, and is credited within the game (there are even some of my own in there somewhere, which are MIDI versions of some of my songs at http://www.modarchive.com/artists/wong_chung_bang if that isn't too blatant a plug for you). Graphics are entirely original... all right, apart from the explosions.

A facility for level editing is provided, via an easy to use system that involves editing the INI file of the game. It took me ages to get that right, you know.

Thanks again to Steve Harris for hosting, and thanks to another completely different Steve Harris for a great new album.

UPDATE: I knew I'd forget to include _something_ in the ZIP. The LCD-like font for the high score table can be found here: http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~nm156/lcd_font.zip

Very nice. Although the control could still be improved by having more variation of direction depending on where it hits the paddle.

reminds me of . .. w. ell of breakout.Im not trying to be rude , the fun factor is high, but it doesnt have much more than the old one thats original.Breakout was probably done too many times lol.Well good game thoguh and i saw hardly no difference from regular ball movement.Sometimes your ball can get stuckin a loop for quite a while.God job though bye.

Nice :) I like the game over screen especially, but the game plays well too. Good sound. The only thing is that text on the high score table is too big on my screen, and each lines text gets cut off half way.

Posted by Andy H 3rd October, 2003

Oh, I see what is causing that, from your screenshots above, you are using that digital font. Most people will not have that.

Great ball movement, needs more bad guys to really feel seperate from other breakout games.

I see you used an INI file to store the level data, this was probably to decrease game size, am i right? I like it because it means you can edit the levels :D, not that I've bothered yet. Its a nice challenging game and making the levels work how they did with the INI file must have taken some hard work.

The way that the ball moves when it hits the bat is explained in the Help within the game. And yes, the INI file, which was used to reduce the size of the game and also make it more easily expandable, took me ages! Thanks for the comments, everyone.

The only thing I dont like is that title screen, it kinda sucks, no offense. On my pc, the text just apears as way to big arial text - I do have that font on my other PC, or 1 like it but this PC doesn't seem to have it. And is it me or is the title at the top way to distorted.

For everyone having problems, the LCD font can be found here: http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~nm156/lcd_font.zip I'll also update the description with it.

i know this strays a little from topic, but how do you tell if the game gets a thumbs down?

Posted by David Newton (DavidN) 4th October, 2003

At the top of the page, there are two icons: thumbs up and thumbs down. At the time of writing the score's 12 to 1. As for voting thumbs down, it could happen maliciously - if someone has something against the author of the game. On the other hand, it could genuinely be because someone doesn't like the game. No matter how good a game is, you can't please everyone.

Excellent Game. I love it. You should add it to the cnet download.com directory.

Good Idea and well thought out. I thought that the ripped music was the only let down of this game.. It's a double rip If this is converted mod music. It's also the theme music from one of the Tekken Tag stages.

Posted by David Newton (DavidN) 5th October, 2003

Well, I only ripped MOD music from my own compositions... does that count? <¦-) Yes, the other MIDs are mostly from www.vgmusic.com, though. You've got me there.

Didn't Arkanoid have a gun and enemies that fly down too?

DANCE OF DEATH===GREAT ALBUM???? NOOOOOOO WAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY!!!!! maiden and bruce-bruce are "dead"... metal is also dead... i'm sad... :(

Posted by David Newton (DavidN) 30th October, 2004

Metal isn't dead - have a look at www.noiserecords.com (particularly Iron Savior, Gamma Ray and Silent Force). Also, I can't believe it's been a year since I released this.
