Steve Harris's online draughts allows you to play draughts/checkers against players from all around the world or just a straight-forward 2 player game.

The game includes elements such as chatting and ranking of players. You can accept or decline challenges, host your own game or join another game.

Quitting mid-game will mean you automatically lose the game thus prevent cheating.

See if you can become a Grand Master!

You liked it so much, you put your name on it!

I would have reviewed this, but I wouldn't have been able to fill the character limit without resorting to primal screams.

This game is just odd. Firstly, it has Steve Harris's name attached, which is going to heavily confuse some Iron Maiden fans ("What?! Harris made a draughts game?!"). I despise having a name on a game, like Sid Meier's Civ, or Chris Sawyer's Locomotion - it's like people are going to say, "Oh, it must be good, Steve Harris made it", like a George Foreman Grille.

It's basically just posh draughts, with some odd music playing in the background (some weird annoying lounge music thing, like The Sims). I registered but there was nobody to play. I tried to host a game and it wouldn't let me. I played a game against myself, but I ended up losing. My experiences were not good with this app.

I don't really see a market for this (freeware) game. Draughts is draughts is draughts, and you can get it off Yahoo! for free anyway.

Plus, it's 7.4MB! Why download this when you can get the same elsewhere via a browser?

Also the quit button doesn't work.

Matt Boothman stop being so fussy. This is ten times better than a lot of the stuff that gets posted here. Why is it odd If he wants to attach his name to it? Really, it's no big deal

I agree, adam.

But it does make me think of all those old SNES games where they added some famous name on crap games to make them sell better. 'Nigel Mansells World Championship' ftw! x3

Chill out Matt! Blimey anyone would think I just added another crappy game to TDC.

If you read the instructions some people will have trouble using the game if they use a router. I even included a nice little link to show people how to fix it (by forwarding port 1203).

New version uploaded with super amazing quit button effect.

TBH I couldn't think of anything else to call the game.

Everytime I click a button different music starts to play (maybe its the same music) over the top of the other music. So if I spend ages clicking buttons then lots of music plays.

I didn't get to play online because there weren't any servers, but the actual game did look quite profressional. I hope to play it later when some servers are hopefully up.

Hmmm weird. Thanks i'll look in to it.

Steve

That music bug happens to me too.

Posted by Steve Harris 19th July, 2007

Should be fixed now.

Posted by Ski 19th July, 2007

There's no one online Lol Im not sure if I even remember how to play, last time was in some log cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains

You just have to cross over the other player's pieces right? Is it diagonally or something?

Sorry if my post seemed a bit strong, but it was late. The points are still valid though.

"I would have reviewed this, but I wouldn't have been able to fill the character limit without resorting to primal screams."

This first sentence made me chuckle. It's that bad compared to everything else here is it? Or maybe it's just compared to your amazing 2 downloads?

"This game is just odd." "I despise having a name on a game" What else am I going to call an online draughts game I made?

"It's basically just posh draughts" How do you make 'posh draughts'?

"I registered but there was nobody to play" It may have something to do with it only just being released? Call me mad but hey.

"I played a game against myself, but I ended up losing" You're either retarted or you played a 2 player game and also won?

"I don't really see a market for this (freeware) game. Draughts is draughts is draughts, and you can get it off Yahoo! for free anyway" Why bother doing anything then? OMG EA made a FPS, don't bother doing another one!!!111

The only relevant and useful contribution you made was to do with the quit button.

That's right Adam. There are some instructions with the game too

Posted by Matt Boothman 20th July, 2007

1. The first sentence actually doesn't say what I meant it too. I didn't mean it was so bad that it made me scream, I though there wasn't enough to write about, unless I used very long words (primal screams - AAAAAAAAAAH etc).

2. Call it "Draughts".

3. You make draughts, then add lounge music.

4. Yeh, you're right.

5. This was a joke. Maybe not a good one, but humour in the brain of the beholder.

6. What I meant was that this didn't offer anything that people haven't already got. Maybe if you'd included more games with it (chess, reversi etc) it would do.

Like I say, it was late and I was a bit harsh, but the points remain. It all depends on whether you can take criticismo or not.

Posted by Hayo 20th July, 2007

I actually worked hard to get the music like that.

Posted by Steve Harris 21st July, 2007

2. How then would it appear to be any different from other game?

3. Your point is? As Hayo has said that's what we wanted

6. That is the plan going forward.

I take CONSTRUCTIVE criticism very well. Someone bitching at me without any real points or helpful advice annoys me. Hence my post above.

Your avatar is pissing me off but the game looks nice.

This looks just like the MSN game >.>

Posted by Hayo 23rd July, 2007

Yeah but the msn game doesn't have the lounge music.

Posted by Matt Boothman 23rd July, 2007

Heh Steve, we'll agree to disagree here. You think I'm bitching, I think I'm criticising.

The thing is with EVERY online click game, eventually, after about two weeks, nobody comes online. So you have a redundant game. And seen as you cannot play one player games, the game ends up being deleted. Might be harsh, but that's the reality.

Yeah but it looks really nice!

''This game is just odd. Firstly, it has Steve Harris's name attached, which is going to heavily confuse some Iron Maiden fans'' indeed. ROFL your name is steve harris and your avatar is mc hammer amusing

Posted by DaVince 29th July, 2007

Actually, I agree on Boothman here. It's just online draughts, nothing special, probably one in a dozen. And without enough advertising there won't be anyone to play with.

Posted by Hayo 30th July, 2007

But you can still listen to the lounge music then.

I just have a few questions. What is draughts ? Is it sort of like Checkers ? ... I doubt it's like Chess. ...

I'd download to see, but it's MB's for a Board game, of all things ... take 5 min to dl it, but eats space, and just one more thing to delete, and I usually dl alot, then check em out later, so it's gonna sit on my computer collecting dust so to speak for a while.

Umm .. yea ... so ... what exactly are the rules ? .. if it's like Chess and had a computer opponent, i'd definitely give it a whirl.
