Full game.
'The Way Of The Empty Hand' is a retro-style 1 on 1 fighting game, based on Karate. There's no jumping around the screen, no throwing fireballs, just pure fighting.

Your goal is to take your karateka (someone who does karate) from a novice white belt right through to becoming a 10th Dan Black Belt master. You fight through a series of gradings to earn points which you can spend 'RPG' style to 'Level-up' your fighter. As you progress through the different belts, your fighter becomes tougher, more powerful, and learns new fighting moves.

The matches are full-contact bouts, no time limit, no rounds, win by KO.

You start by creating your karateka, setting his base attributes of Toughness, Power and Stamina. You also select the basic moves to start with. As you progress through the game, you earn points by winning matches. You can spend these points at each training stage to increase your base attributes and learn new fighting moves.

When you've beaten the Single Player game, you can go beat up a friend in the 2 Player mode!

The Game features:

* 3 blocks, 4 punches, 8 kicks and 3 preset powerful combinations to master.

* You can chain moves together to develop your own combinations.

* AI in the Single Player game starts easy and gradually increases to provide a decent challenge - the opponent reacts to your moves.

* Enter the dojo (training hall) to help familiarise yourself with the control system before you fight, and practice new moves under the watchful eye of your Sensei(teacher), using the makiwara (striking post).

* Matches are staged against several random backgrounds.

* 2 Player mode features 'handicap' options to balance out unequal skill levels between players to keep matches fun and challenging.

* Supports 2 gamepads or keyboard (redefinable): standard TGF2 Ctrl+Y to change controls.

* Full instructions included in the download zipfile - please read them first.

UPDATED VERSION - descriptions added to selection screens, some animations improved slightly.

Wow this rules. Good effort dude. Only thing I didn't like was not being able to read about each move before I bought it, instead only seeing the animation. Overall it's a lot of fun to play

The buttons are shift, ctrl, enter and whats button 3?

Thank you all for the kind feedback.

Mauri - button 3 is space bar by default, but you're probably better off pressing Ctrl+Y and redefining the keys to suit yourself.

Yea, playing with default keys won't get you far.

Just played it through again myself, forgot to mention . . . those of you who want a chance to fight the Sensei (guy in the red suit, in the dojo), beat the 10th Dan 3 times without a defeat and you get the chance!

If only everyone here made games this good.

I can't find a single flaw with this game.

Coming from me, that is an Incredible Compliment.

This is one of the best games I've ever played.

And did you notice I didn't say Klik Games ... no .. I said Games(.)

5 stars well deserved.

If you were to send me the OpenSource, I'd hail you as a God. Fantastic Game !

Ok, I do have ONE complaint after all.

I played through, finally figured out a winning strategy against the 10th dan black belt ...

And when I beat him three times, I got to fight the red suit sensei, like you said ...

Now here's the problem: I lost to him, now I have to fight the 10th dan black belt 3 times again ?

That's Torture ! .. I want to see what's past the red guy, but I don't want to beat those 10th dans again ... takes too long, and I've played the game to Death already.

Is there some sort of secret to warp to the red sensei ? .. Maybe you should have included a save point in the game or something.

There's no short-cuts in karate.

What's after the Sensei? Nothing. He's the token hidden character. I decided to allow players the chance to fight him because there's always someone who wants to fight characters that are primarily background figures.

What do you get if you beat him? Satisfaction that you beat him? Maybe . . .

I deliberately didn't include a save option, I don't want one.

Anyways, you've finished the game - congratulations. Image

Thanks. Can you play as the Sensei the next run through if you beat him ? Image

That would be a nice little bonus for beating the game.

And add a save feature for after you beat the game at least then .. so you'll be able to play as him on the next boot up if you beat the game.

Really though, the sensei feels like the end boss, that you can only get to by fighting the same ranked guy 3 times in a row instead of feeling like a secret.

I'll probably play back through at a later date, but I've played this game into the ground. Time to give it a break for a while.

Really good game nontheless.

And that's the ONLY thing I found wrong with it.

Oh, btw, I found a secret.

Unless it's a glitch, but if glitch then one that doesn't hinder gameplay at all.

There's a way to decrease power and stamina in the beginning, to gain a few more stat points to buy moves with.

I think you've found a glitch . . . it wasn't intentional, and I can't find how to do it.

Save features: Only ways I know of doing this are:

1) Create a password system so you enter a password to unlock each level - not suitable because your character can vary at each level depending on how you play the game.

2) Create a password to unlock the 10th Dan, after you've beaten him - possible I guess, I just didn't see the point.

3) Use ini files to save your current level and stats, which I don't really want to do because it's too easy for a player to edit them (cheat).

As for playing as the Sensei, I did think about adding him to the 2 player mode as a selectable character, along with different style/colour uniforms.
But it's a lot of frames of animation to edit, and I'm lazy. So I didn't.

Thanks again for your feedback, glad you enjoyed the game.

Ok, it's not a big event or anything anyways, it gives very little advantage, if any at all.

Here's how you do it. Click on a Move like you are going to buy it. Click once on the + for power or stamina. Click once on -10 for power or stamina.

It's that simple.

It allows you to get a powerful move really early in the game, IF you can beat the first opponent only using the beginning punch and no power that is.

Also, make sure you have just enough stamina to use the starter punch. If not, then you can't use any attacks, lol.

btw, this is my current Favorite Game. It'll take alot to change that.

Thanks for that, I'll look into fixing it at some point.

Updated: Added descriptions to moves when the mouse is passed over the animation, on the training screen. Minor change to the wheel kick animation.

Sequel in progress . . .
