I made this in about three hours and it only took up three frames! Actually, this was done for a contest where the entries had to be "arcade-y". I'd say that retro 80's is arcadey. The game is just a simple ball catching thing with the feel of an old arcade game (atari 2600 style). It's coin-op! All you do is control a small, pixellated cup left and right with the arrow keys. As balls drop from random positions on the ceiling, you have to catch them. If you can get the ball inside the cup, you get 500 points. You lose a life if it hits the bottom. Originally, the game had you lose a life if the ball touched the rim or sides as well, but due to difficulty that was removed and you get 50 points instead.

It's fun until you realise it doesn't get any harder

Posted by dndfreak 19th January, 2009

Like I said; three hours. If I get the time I'll redo it as Pang: The End lol.

Its fun hehe

thanks. I just thought it was funny how people will spend years making games like Noito Love 2 when, if maybe I added more difficulty, Pang could easily entertain for similar time periods.

Actually games which people spend years working on, show. I'll accept that this was made for purposes other then trying to really impress, but I can't not penalize it for simply being way to simply and quite honestly, kind of boring to play.

Sorry, but there's really nothing exciting or addicting about this game. I'd make suggestions about what you could do to make it better, but really... the sad truth is I think don't think this kind of game can be made better.

Tough position to offer constructive criticism in, but I tried.

Actually, There is a way BrandonC. All I would need to do is increase the speed gradually, add a few little powerups like a widener and a speed reducer/reset, a bonus multiplier for in-cups in a row, and some decent sound effects(the BGM track was waay too loud). Throwing in color would be a good idea too but I really wanted to make an atari style retro feel and I had a decent time constraint. I'm thinking about uploading a redo under those effects.

A simple game like this is meant to be a time waster, no matter how many features you put into it. A game that took years to make that has a vast story and a ton of game play and replay value will forever overshadow time wasters.

However, I like time wasters more. I don't feel like sitting down and playing some massive game for hours.

Posted by dndfreak 25th January, 2009

Exactly. That's why casual gaming is the highest earning genre in pc gaming (other than WoW)

You missed my point. A simple game like this could never be as good as a game that real work went into, nor will it last as long, as you claimed above.

Posted by dndfreak 26th January, 2009

I never said that the game would have more of a hook, im just saying that simple is sometimes better. Not necessarily with this game cuz I wasn't really trying to give it any effort but games in general. I mean, unless were talking strategy titles that try to be complex and even then you cant go too far...

This game will never entertain for a similar time period. Add 20 more levels and a ton of power-ups and it will still get boring sooner.

I mean that most players will fool around with them for a relatively equal amount of time. I'm not saying that Noito is the same length in any way, just that most players don't spend enough time on these games to finish what they started. I mean, I spent about 5-10 minutes playing noito until I beat level 1, rated it, and got back to the site leaving the game lost forever in a sea of long forgotten files archives.

You meant what you said, and that's it. If you didn't mean that, you shouldn't have put those words together.

What you said was that people will play this game for the same amount of time as Noito. Wrong.

Posted by dndfreak 28th January, 2009

It is what I said, just in a different way. Since apparently you don't have the processing power to understand that, I rephrased it above.

I pity people like you who don't have a grasp on English.

Posted by dndfreak 30th January, 2009

I speak English a lot better than most; grammar in forum posts doesn't matter. Then again, the same goes for your opinions. Just admit that you're a hypocritical dumb@$$ and let me move on with my life.

This game was a little boring, very bland graphics and gameplay. While I don't mind simplicity in games, this is so simple that there is little entertainment to be had.

It's not the grammar you retard. It's the words you used to express your idea.

Posted by dndfreak 5th February, 2009

look who stooped to insults now.

If I'm the one with the English problem, then how come you are the one that can't understand it?

@alspal yeah I know it was pathetic, that was kinda the point with this one...

I'm not insulting you. I'm addressing you by your title.

Anyway, looks like I won the argument here. Try to be a little... well... smarter... next time.

win what? last time i checked you gave up on delivering a rebuttal aka I won this one.

Even though you were wrong when you said this could entertain...

Posted by dndfreak 14th February, 2009

i didnt mean entertain as much as i meant 'waste time'. Happy now?

Posted by Kazuma 15th February, 2009
Rated :

Not really. It still wouldn't waste as much time as a game with serious effort put into it, as you claimed above.

Posted by dndfreak 15th February, 2009

Listen Kaz -can I call ya Kaz?- The average user might play a game on here for 5, ten minutes tops before rating (hopefully) and moving on. The fact that it's practically impossible to die in that game before ten minutes go by means that equality will be achieved. Unless, of course, you cant play this thing if your life depended on it. Or maybe you did what you did with my articles and quit after thirty seconds just so you can be more of a prick.

Or, you know, your game is boring, so people will quit soon, where as a game with effort put into it will entertain for a much longer period of time.

Posted by dndfreak 15th February, 2009

true the other game will have a greater POTENTIAL but most klik users aren't looking for a few hours of playtime, just a 5-minute indie thing before moving on to another, the same experience achieved at a flash site.

Not what you said before, you dumb little kid.

Sigh... this is getting old fast. You can't even remember what you said above?

I agreed with the fact that most people play time wasters instead.

However, you said your game, a simple time waster, could entertain for similar periods of time as a game with lots of depth and work gone into it.

Wrong-o.

Posted by dndfreak 21st February, 2009

no, I said will. Oh wait, I did say could, didn't I? Anyways, that's not the point. I was just usind a les definitive phrase so you wouldn't jump at me for a KC again.

Anyways, games like this one will attract the same game time. COULD? never, because games like noito has a far greater potential. WILL? probably, because clik gamers playing clik games won't put in the effort to reach that potential (unless, of course, they paid for said clik game, like those who bought the full Noito Love 2. But that's a special case.).

Entertain and attract are different.

The one you used before made you wrong. The one you use now, attract, makes you correct.

Posted by dndfreak 26th February, 2009

Depends upon your definition of entertain, but sure.

Really Kazuma- make a game or something. Don't compare yourself unless you know you're better.

Put your critique where your mouth is and then we'll talk.
