This is a pack of 5 tutorials/examples of features often found in RTS games, but not exclusively.

These are things I have learnt how to do in order to make an RTS game which i am currently working on.

These tutorials show the following:

Basic pathfinding: How to make a single active object navigate a path around obstacles

Drag and drop objects: How to drag and drop objects without the object snapping to the mouse position.

Selection box: A selection box much like those found in RTS's or operating systems. This one has 4 solid sides, not just the corners or a big translucent box.

Mini-maps: Use fast loops to create a mini-map showing the locations of units. This one works regardless of the frame size or shape as well as the maps own proportions.

Advanced Pathfinding: The final tutorial is really just an example of the foundations of an RTS engine. In it you can select units in various different ways and order them to move. Its primary function is to show how to use the APF to achieve pathfinding for duplicate instances of the same active object.

Some of the examples require the 'Advanced Pathfinding Extension' by Grey Hill. Available here:

Can I just say that these tutorials are really useful. I feel you shouldn't have included the basic pathfinding, it's way too good to share. But I'm going to use it any way.

(Most games on this site wouldn't be able to use it any way)

actually i just noticed, in the basic pathfinding one, it sometimes refers to a 'leader'. That is left over annotation from a previous version of it. If you just interpret 'leader' as 'unit' then it's the same.

I also see that there's a section at the bottom of the event editor called 'poo'

hahaha, that was probably a temporary section with counters in that was later deleted... except the title.

FOO!
Ranting on about no community spirit in one section, then making remarks like this in another.
Shut up FOO! And try to learn something from this good FOO concerning what is good behaviour and what's E-LI-TIST!
I pity the FOO who's E-LI-TIST!
I PITY THE FOO!

It's great of Mr TOM to share this with the community. It's stuff LIKE DAT that raises the quality of both the community and the games therein.

And its people like you 'Eternal Man' (or MR T) that lowers the quality and maturity of this community.

I see nothing pertaining to minimaps and selection boxes in here. Everything extracted to the Examples/APF eems to be all about pathfinding.
