Basically, whenever I try and make a game, i just get bored half-way through and never finish it. Maybe I am aiming too high? Should I spend more time on the design process?

Having a clear plan is a huge help, though I usually use them as more of a guide, but I still run into the problem of coding skills increasing faster than the progress of my games.

Try making a small game once in a while. I've only finished a couple of larger projects, and I've got a couple of huge ones in the works. It's nice to just flip out and stay up all night making a little shooter or something now and again. Don't worry about music or sound effects or even graphics, just make it minimalist and arcadish. And if it sucks, or you don't feel like finishing it, don't worry about ever releasing it. It's only a couple of hours, and you might even learn something.

Hmm, I often run into the same problem. It always helps to start small and get the basic game done, then work on graphics and extra features. It also helps to push yourself to keep working on it, don't allow yourself to start any other project until you've finished the first one. My final advice is to stop if you're not having fun making the game, you will only really be able to finish it if you enjoy making it.

Don't force yourself to finish a game unless you think it's going to be really good. If you don't like it how is anyone else going to? I do start tons of things that i have no intention of finishing but every now and then there is an idea that seems to 'click' and i carry it on, lol see what i did there?
Personally I have never designed a game before making it EVER!
and ive made about 11 that ive submitted here.
ive also done what Radix wrote about, whilst bored with making my current project I made a space invaders clone over about 2 days and it turned out really quite good fun (to make). Ive also thought about making a tetris mini game that will be an unlockable in my game. That way I'm still working on the game in a small way.

I haven't finished anything for ages, maybe more than a couple of years. All my work is lying in engines all over the place as I go from one project to another and rarely return. I am however trying quite hard to finish ONE game.
