Well 3ds max is good but it cost's monny but there GMAX and it's free and Really good 3ds max is better then GMAX made by same Company
3DS Max & Maya are the 2 bests out there at this point, personally, I'd try one of them out (I perfer 3DS Max). 6, 7, & 8 are all basicly the same, so if you can find all 3 of them, you can nail yourself 90 free days to decide if its worth your money. I use 3DS Max, so far I love it. If your on a very tight budget how ever, a really nice & very small program with system requirements that work on a Windows95 with no videocard, check out Anim8or. Its pretty impressive for what looks like an Indie project.
The first block, "points", contains the location of each point.
The second block, "faces", contains sizable lists of point indecies for the corners of the polygon.
Or instead of faces you could do facets and use 3 points each.
Or if you had a few brain cells you could use the visual editor.
okay, hopefully Ive got some brain cells. Last question I think.. How long did it take you to learn how to use it? Cause Im probably not a fast learner.
If you're talking about 3ds max, it usually comes with a load of tutorials which will guide you through the tools. And about learning to use it... there are so many features in 3ds max that you likely won't use most of them, however follow the tutorials for the specific things you want to do and go from there.
I just use Serif's ( www.serif.com ) Impact Plus. It's really a 3D animator, but it has a simple, incredibally easy to use modeler and it has great support for particles, lighting, materials, ect.... Oh, and it comes with a ton of built in models, I made my non-christmas avatar with it, here it is:
I also sometimes use CyberMotion 3D Designer ( http://www.3d-designer.com/ ). It makes it really easy to create landscapes and sky's and text and such. Some of the thing's I've made with it look photorealistic.
3D Studio Max 8 supports particals in addition to almost anything else you could ever need. If you need help getting used to 3DS Max though, check out www.3DBuzz.com , thats where I learned all of the basics I needed for 3DS Max, ideally with the interface, and basic modelling, they even go over rigging & box modelling, to make an alien model. The VTM's they have there are amazing, and will drop you off in a position where the tutorials that come with 3DS Max will make alot of sense & pick you back up. I'm still learning, but every time I dedicate some time to it, I learn alot and end up pumping out nicer looking stuff every time. On that note, 3DS Max was also used to help make King Kong, so thats got to be worth something.
The first episode was done that way, and it took them like three months to finish. Every one since then has been done in some software package or another. Now they can complete an episode in four days.
Doesn't it take six months to produce an episode of the simpsons? They have a couple of korean animation houses or something, and they have several episodes worked on concurrently.
