fuck, legendkpr, that was pointless again.
Playing Ristar again really inspires me to do gfx like that..maybe for BnH3.

Legendkpr,
they made 3d models of the donkey kong sprites on a super computer (pc?), then took 2d snapshots of the animation poses and compressed them to a format the Snes is capable of displaying. So they are 2d sprites of 3d models, so they ARE 2d.
That is true and well known by all who know what they're talking about.
The same methods was used for the backgrounds in resident evil 1,2,3 or final fantasy 7,8 and 9. The backgrounds are 2d pictures taken from 3d made on a more powerfull computer, hence the term pre-rendered.

They used silicon graphics machines for the DKC games, and for FF7 as well. Don't know about the FF's after that, might be pc's.

3d sprite is an oxymoron. Sprites cannot be 3D, that would make them meshes...

just for the fun of it, ive dug up some screenshots of final fantasy 9 in hi res mode via emulation.
they're quite large because they lose too much detail if i make them a jpeg or decrease the colours count.
they're about 400k each

I don't think there was anything too mean about my first comment.
