Ok, I am usually not the first one to bitch about admins, but looking at the downloads list right now I see games that should never have been accepted. Do admins even look at what they are accepting? The description and screenshots of the games I am talking about really are enough to reject them.
All right, let me make my reasoning more clear - since I began attempting to put more submissions on to the front page, I've been accepting games if they have at least one screenshot and a description that is actually at least mildly descriptive - regardless of the actual quality of the download. If a download has a good description and a fair number of screenshots that give a decent idea of the game itself, then it will be added to the front page.
In retrospect, I made the wrong decision when I added the three of them this morning - for a start, the screenshots are in BMP format. Usually when this happens, I leave a comment and leave the download in the queue for a few days to see if the author will fix it, and if not, they are deleted. And on this occasion, I didn't look at what I was accepting. It was a mistake, so sorry about that.
Perhaps by using these criteria I have been letting quality of downloads that are actually accepted slide. It's a bad example to bring up the issue using the three recently added submissions (which I'm fairly certain are from a fake account as well), but if admins are to judge a game based on its quality, where do we draw the line for quality of submissions? Each admin may have a slightly different opinion of what's acceptable.
Like Radix said, people have to start somewhere, and if downloads are filtered for quality too vigorously it may discourage newcomers from submitting their games. I consider it better for them to be criticised (constructively?) by the community rather than simply rejected from the queue without explanation.
I am only thinking decent games could drown when too many crap games are accepted/posted on the front page. Hooghaar XL for example was on the frontpage for about 3 hours, and then got kicked of by a bunch of unplayable, bad looking games. And of course you have to start somewhere..I started somewhere too but I didn't post anything.
The screenshots didn't help at all. They were either from the title screen or the menu.
It basically counts as having no screenshots, except it does waste bandwidth.
Listen here! We are NOT a fake account! We decided to join up and make a few games that we thought were pretty cool, and get them on the net! Why didn't you keep them on? We got over 20 DOWNLOADS! Isn't that good?
