Ok, I am currently working on this game, and I'm going to add lots of cinematics. But I fear it will be too large for online, or that people won't just want to download it. How big would be too big for a game to get? Filesize that is.
that's true Klikmaster. I'm almost done with the first level out of 6 (first level has 5 areas)..lol but it shouldn't be too long since the engine has been completed and all that Soon I'll released screenshots following, a small trailer
Or just put both up for download
Problem I find with large games is actually getting them onto a web server! Once I couldn't even upload a 30mb file to ectoprods because the server timed out while uploading it every time, and it wouldn't let me change the timeout time
It depends on what kind of people you expect to download. AOL users for example, usually don't go any higher then 100kb, cause it takes over a minute. Most cable users will download anything between 1 to 10mb, and if the screenshots look very nice and you have a great description, you can, and people have, been able to push that up to 40MB+.
So it all depends on how good you make your game sound. A few people will download it, based on screenshots and description. Then, if they like the game itself, they'll give it good ratings, even a review. After that, more people will download it, the download number goes higher & the ratings raise. Eventually you have a chain reaction of people downloading, until the game gets older.
The only thing that really gets around these "rules" would be online games, and that’s because online games usually aren't fun without a bunch of people. And it's difficult to get more people, if the people who first tried it, got bored waiting for more people to come.
The best way to keep this from happening is to build up a lot of hype and release beta tests to a small portion of people. That way the small portion of people who got to test it, can judge it, considering it's in beta, and the rest of the people waiting for the game, will feel like they FINALLY have access to something that was once top secret.
Too much hype, makes people who would have liked the game, think of it as shit, because they don't see what's so great about it, to gain it such high hype. Agree'd.
I'm on the computer right now, but the heating blanket is on the bet, warming it up. I'd gladly step away from the computer if it made you feel more "satisfied" knowing that the bed was warm with MY body heat though. (no)
