I kinda miss the days when I had no life. Back then, it was easy... finish homework at 6 AM, breakfast, work on a game till 12 AM, then go to school, come back, hang out on the internet all day, etc. And I made some pretty nice games back then too, though mostly useless things like doing fog-of-war in KNP when it could only handle 256 objects.
Now.. there's 17-credit semesters, assignments to send every day, learning the guitar, personal hygiene, etc. Some of you probably go through worse, so I was wondering... where do YOU get that time? No eating out? No showers? No hanging out with people in RL? No playing comp games? No homework? No sleep?
I mean there's a lot to do in making a game. Making the engines, making the sprites, animating the sprites, drawing the backdrops, swearing at Photoshop's filters, testing the engine, fixing the bugs, making a few levels, fixing the bugs, adding more characters and MORE animations, fixing bugs with hotspots & action points & rotations, swearing at MMF's lack of multiple action points, fixing bugs that show up on other peoples comps but not yours, and I'm not really sure what next, because I tend to give up by then...
Oh, and let's not add the little bits of knowledge gathering in between... learning tricks in Photoshop, animating tricks, pulling apart & analyzing someone else's sloppily coded engine, etc.
Disclaimer: Any sarcasm in my posts will not be mentioned as that would ruin the purpose. It is assumed that the reader is intelligent enough to tell the difference between what is sarcasm and what is not.
I do miss the times when I had seemingly endless free time, but I haven't ever had no free time at all (though you mentioned learning the guitar, which I've been meaning to get around to doing for several years). When I first started university I had been taking something of a break from Click, but in third year I got back into it, skiving off juts enough of my honours projects to make a couple of games.
Now that I've finished university, I've no idea what my time situation is going to be. Seeing as I can't even get a job without a permit (that takes 90 days), it looks like I'll be finishing my latest project fairly quickly.
yea guys I am with you....at work for the past 3 months, we've been working on this project. During these 3 months, I only had 2 weekends off.... I'm exausted by the time I am home but slowly I'm working on my game.. I can't stop.
I get a 5 month summer break from Uni and a part time job, but even when Im at work I want to be at home working on my games. But In that time Im also expected to have alot of work done form my final project in my third year
I have as much free time in this summer holiday as I ever had, what with no foreign holiday to endure. I am hoping to actually finish a proper, complete game, but when it comes to whether or not that'll happen your guess is as good as mine.
Doing things socially doesn't really eat into game-making time, seen as mostly it's at night, and I'd never be clicking at night anyway.
Yea Andy, I kinda feel the same way. I never released a game of mine due to that reason. Also, I haven't done a serious game in a long time, for obvious reasons, but I am trying...specially when this project is done at work, I'll have more time. I'm working on this game honestly to keep myself sane...allows me to be creative which at work, even though I work on animations and modeling all day, it isn't my creation so it doesn't do me much. I am working on this game really for myself and for my portfolio. If people do end up liking it, more to it but I do it for myself.
I'm not boring, I just happen to like films that don't feature some kind of anthropomorphised creatures with an underlying "moral", which are made for little children.
No. And the films aren't just made for children at all. I think it's sad you think you're unable to revert back to your childhood imagination, perhaps thats why you're boring? You grew up too fast, Peter Pan.
Maybe I didn't have a particularly brilliant childhood? Maybe there were times when I wanted to kill myself, Adam. Maybe, I wanted to grow up desperately just to be away from those times?
But for your information Adam, I am still in touch with my childlike side. I eat Angel Delight.
Hey Noodle, I know what you are saying as far as cartoons nowdays, but this one is really neat, they even say bad words, and have sex jokes on it..it's great. They made it so kids don't get it, but adults do...
So very clichéd. See Finding Nemo, Toy Storys 1 and 2, The Incredibles, A Bug's Life, Antz, The Antbully, Over the Hedge, Monsters Inc., Madagascar... the list goes on. I just don't like those films very much.
Well that's fine. But you can't say that people who watch it are imature or anything. It's a preference people have as others have for scary movies, adventure and so on.
i prefer stop motin films... like nightmare befor christmass!! but i loved the increbile... they did so many things that werent done befor in any 3d movies
When I had all the time in the world to code it was on the TRS-80 and Apple IIe
Nowadays I squeeze as much in as possible after my kids go to sleep after 7pm. And if anybody else is married out there, you KNOW your wife won't let you program every single night! So I probably work on klik games about 10-20 hours a week tops since I stay up way too friggin' late for when I have to get up and work in the morning.
I play guitar and bass on the off-nights, or draw or something. And then of course you have to fit in playing so-called "real" games on the SNES, GC, PC, and PS2!!

02/08/2006 23:04:11 Adam Phizzy sure, why?

He likes to pull the wool over peoples eyes, as the saying goes.
By a route obscure and lonely,
Haunted by ill angels only,
Where an Eidolon, named night,
On a black throne reigns upright,
I have reached these lands but newly
From an ultimate dim Thule
From a wild clime that lieth, sublime,
Out of space
Out of time.
