Been a while since I made something and posted it, but in tribute to Halloween coming up, I figured I'd make a Jack-o-Lantern. Looking for critique, so tell me what you think. Thanks.
Very nice indeed. The lighting is pretty awesome. I wish I could model >_>. I think the lit version is better...so many shades of orange =D. Nice work.
Critique, okay.
The first one is fine, but the second one looks like a bad render. Mainly that's because the grass doesn't look like grass and the pumpkin doesn't look like a pumpkin.
Biggest problem I can identify is the shadows on the bevelling of the face. The inside of the pumpkin is glowing, so it should be scattering the light in every direction relative to the inside surface. Which means the shadows inside the eyes and mouth should be less sharply defined if they're there at all.
Next, the colour of the inside of the eyes/nose/mouth is the same as the outside skin. That's just wrong.
Also, I realise this is nitpicking, but if you've ever carved one of those things you'll know how hard it is to get sharp corners, especially on the teeth. It's certainly possible but imperfections always help.
Finally, the exterior lighting and the skin texture just look kind of wrong. I'm not sure how exactly, sorry. But it just doesn't look right.
Appreciate the critique, Radix. I'll take all that into consideration for my next project (whatever/whenever that might be). Thanks.
PS: In the second picture, there is a light shining down on the pumpkin. The first one however, no lights are present except for the one inside. The glow is coming from the inside out.
