It doesn't work like that. You vote for whoever is more right for you. There isn't a party that does 100% of what I want them too, so I chose the closest. That's all you can do. Or simply vote against the current government just so they're no longer in power (I believe the Daily Mail coined this as "Give them a bloody nose").
Ben is right on the money. the "my vote will not count" only works when everyone else except that person votes.
If there is nobody good enough to vote for, stand yourself. If you can't be bothered, just vote for the best of the bunch (or vote tactically). Either way, there is no argument for not participating in elections.
I'm sure there have been many elections won by tiny majorities (maybe not 1, though).

Then vote for a party which is in support of the EU and it's relaxed immigration laws. Lib Dem, or Labour'd be your best bet.
Although i dont like The Labour Party i do personally believe Local elections you vote for the candidate who has done the best for the area, whether they are Conservatives, Labour or Liberal.
This Will suprise Shadrach Boothman but i voted Labour , the candidate has been in ages and always does good for the area, no point voting in someone useless who will neglect where you live is there?
Make your policy/political stand on general elections, thats when to get your opinion on the Party Politics i reckon.

Plus there was a report that stated that if we placed wind turbines offshore and on every piece of high land available, we would still need vast quantities of fuel generated power, the enviromental benefit is also minimised by the impact of building, transporting and errecting the turbines. Nice idea, i like it, but it is not the answer to solve the UK's power problem. Similar to recycling, the only material thats worthwhile recycling is aluminium, anything else has more of an impact that digging it out the ground and starting again , although the impact maybe justified as we are not using resources left in the ground. Hmm.
Lol i'm quite a socialist at heart, i just evaluate everything with a scientist's eyes, which makes me giggle at whats happening . I dont mind a true socialist, but Champagne Socialists really wind me up!
I have a freind who's family (all Labour supporters) is easily pulling in approaching 90k a year, but they moan about university fees (before the new system), road tax on their big brand new 4x4's, have a beutiful huge house and a lot of posh motors. I have a multi coloured British Leyland motor , but i would not trade it for the world
As i said Local Elections i vote for the best person for the job, party politics has nothing to do with it, the Labour guy takes care of the area, and thus got my vote .
In the general i dont know who to vote for , if i ever set a party up (me and a few old mates was talking about this the other day), you would be one i would ask to join , we was thinking of the "Common Sense" party, as so few people seem to have this ability nowadays.
Yeah, I agree about those people who drive massive cars then complain because they get taxed. I agree with having to pay for university - after all, uni is a privilege, not a right. I wouldn't want to be a drain on society simply because I wanted to spend three years eating dry cereal and wanking into my socks.
I would join your party Hagar, but there's no way you'd ever make a dent on the Big Three. But I am thankful we have at least three, in the US they only have two.
Haha university life so elegantly put, since i have been living with a girl - my eating habits have gone...healthy! . I dont drink or smoke either , some people class me as a weirdo for that hehe.
I personally think University fee's should be assisted upon Merit, much like the old old system. Being an engineer (electronic & Software), i think engineers will help the economy and therefore the cost to the enconomy is very little, if any.
Merit based scholarships are like gold dust now, and there is some superb engineers that can not afford to go to uni at all as in the old system the parents could not afford it, and on the new system thought of having that much debt freaks them out. A very good freind of mine never got to go to uni, and he would have done a BEng Mechanical degree so easy, he is that good. Things like that really annoy me, he should have had help...(says the "Tory").
Where a degree/university education will help the enconomy I reckon merit based scholarships should be given, thats my opinion anyway.
I agree without a large slice of money, we would stand no chance in a general. Even if i won the lottery, a few million is pennies for running a campaign .

4x4's are a little more needed up here though. Rivers flood, huge hills, snow storms from time to time.
I propose a system like Hagars university idea, where it's all based on merits. If you live in the hills you shouldn't get taxed extra on 4x4's. If you live in London with one then you are a spacker and deserve to get financially raped.
Personally I can't fault the university system. There are plenty of measures to help you out if you can't afford to go, you can take out an extra student loan to cover student fees so you can effectively go uni and not pay a penny till you start earning in a proper job.
Incidentally, it's cheaper for me to go away to one of our places on the mainland than it is to jump into the Motorhome for a UK break now. Now you can anywhere for a days worth of petrol.
Aaah Jimmi, you can't have one rule for the you and one rule for the rest. You do not need a 4x4 at all, that's balls. And even if you did, you could still afford to pay extra tax on it, seen as you talk of the several houses you have. It's your choice to live in the scenic, beautiful hills, away from the polluted cities.
Don't agree on the merit idea though. If you choose to follow an in-demand career path, you will be rewarded with a higher pay package at the end. If you choose to study psychology, it's your own fault if you can't find a well-paid job. University is available to all now, there's no financial reason not to go. If you're poor, you get it paid for. If you're rich, you can pay yourself. If you're in the middle (like me), you pay a bit, and the government pays a bit. A perfect solution to the problem by Labour.
