It has been since 2005 that we did a Desktop Compo so its about time for a new one!
Here is how it works, take a screenshot of your current desktop and upload it, then post the link right here. Everyone on the dc will then be able to vote for the best desktop. The winner will receive a (undisclosed) amount of *NeW* DC points. IF you think you are up for it and share your desktop with the world, then post it right here. Good Luck!

I'd enjoy Portal some more (I used to make maps) but for some reason the entire Source engine decided it was going to say "F You" to my computer, and now I can't get any of the damn games to run. HL2.exe keeps giving me a runtime error on startup and I don't get it. It really pisses me off though, because Team Fortress 2 was so much fun, and I never did get to completely beat Episode 2.
Reinstall maybe? My XP was giving my jip with HL2 games a while ago. A quick format and graphic card driver update later and its been running smoothly ever since.

I'd reinstall it, but I truly do not feel like doing that. I'm finally re-adjusting to my computer after formating a new hard drive in January.

well guess what. by the end of tonight i won't even have a desktop anymore. few days ago, everytime i booted windows from GRUB it would say there were inconsistencies on one of my disks, then proceed to scan, and about .5 seconds later, cancel the scan and boot windows. then i noticed my dvd drive wouldnt read any cds, not even blank ones, nor dvds. so i get on dell tech chat and the dude goes through this process and ultimately calls me up to walk me through rebooting and booting from the vista install disk. so says he that my cd drive works fine, its just fuckin windows thats pissing on it, and i have to do a clean install of vista. only i cant back anything up because the... ahem... DVD DRIVE DOESNT WORK!!! so i had to mickey mouse an old hdd and a old external cd burner case together to form "ghetto external hdd" which is 20 gigs. i hope to god its enough space and this stupid hdd format and reinstall works.
</rant>
i'll have my plain white desktop up in a few hours
Calling Dell to help you fix the problem was your first mistake. To assume that any solution of theres was going to help you, besides reformatting, is kind of silly. I have gone to eMachines over 8 times asking them how to fix a problem, and the only solution I received was "System Restore" and if that doesn't work "Format Hard drive".
What you should do, is try partitioning your hard drive, install Windows again. This way your CD/DVD drive is recognized on a copy of Windows. You will still be able to access all your files on the other partition, so now what you want to do is burn those files over and then reformat and reinstall. If you haven't tried this already though, which I'm sure you have.. just throwing it out there. I lost power to my computer a few weeks ago, something happened, not exactly sure what. Every time I tried to boot, I would lock up just after the Windows logo. I used the Windows Vista disk and I had it check for and repair any problems. Sat back for about 15 minutes, and it seemed to fix everything up.
Another thing you might want to try is, completely uninstall your CD drives. By that I mean, go into the hardware manager, storage devices or whatever, and uninstall them completely. Then when you reboot Vista, it should automatically reinstall them. Maybe what happened is, when something went kooky, something caused the current drivers to remain functional, but not capable of detecting specific hardware.
I'm just blowing smoke out of my ass, but 9x out of 10 when I do it... my computer in one way or another gets fixed without resorting to reformatting.
By now you prolly already formated, but at least my post will still be here for anyone else.
PS:
Oh crap... this was the desktop competition post. I completely forgot, because the topic was so off. Sorry, continue with the competition. (If you want to IM me about what I said above, mail me.)
Tim, is that a 16:10 and 4:3 dual monitor setup? never seen that before! (edit: lol it's not. just my broken perception)
I've disabled my 2nd monitor now. There's something not quite right with XP doing dual monitors (that and the night/day brightness difference between my Dell and iMac monitor ).
I designed mine to aggravate my brother, in his attempts to use my computer. It looks like its just the default windows.... until you realize those icons are all pasted onto it, not real

I like that wallpaper, interesting technique of the leaf brush, lens flare, and cloud filter. I never would've thought of that, so simple but still great.

btw i know it isnt voting time yet but i already vote for Markno2 because he made me laugh and actually put some effort into his wallpaper and desktop while everybody else just took a screenshot of their desktop- which is the idea of this thread but Markno2 just deserves the comedy price.
edit: oh by the way adam have you already seen the trailer for the winter olympics in toronto 2010? i loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove that animation. makes me happy every time. ive already used all winter olympics wallpapers in the past. its by the same author btw.
i am impressed how many people here like anime and have anime wallpapers. also i am impressed nobody minds those giant icons XP gives you by default- they are very ugly looking. i am also impressed there are people who play johnny rpg.
Heh I have a games folder in My Documents (Well Windows says it's 's Documents) with all my freeware games... Don't actually have any commercial games installed!
(OS X shot 'cause that's where I am)
EDIT: Aww none of those Octonauts walls are in 1920x1200 .

You mean the giant icons Vista gives you? XP's icons are smaller. You can change the size of them on Vista just like on XP though, but as long as the icons on the desktop have higher resolutions, they really don't look bad at all. Infact, once you have them for about a week, the smaller icons actually look blurry to me, even when I go out to the computer in the other room with XP installed on it. Plus the little shortcut arrow is uber big and covers most of the damn icon when they're tiny.
Here's mine.
I also have dual screens. Both have different resolutions though so that's why there's a little black under one of the screens.
I'm using my own breakdance background since if I bring chicks home they notice the bground and ask if I breakdance. Breakdancing is of course cool so that equals score .
Nah but seriously I had some sparetime some months ago and I did it in like 20 mins that is why it is so crap.

Oh, now I get what you mean. That's just my keyboard layout, ready to be set to US International at any given moment.
Slínk: to be exact, this is just the standard look of one of the many window managers. The window manager you see before you (called Gnome) has two bars by default. There are other window managers and all kinds of applications/window managers to drastically change your graphical system's look, but I like Gnome best (good performance plus plenty features).
I keep the MIDI controller pushed back when I'm not writing music so I can type easier whilst programming or doing homework. The right monitor (speaker) was sort of crooked when I took these, I usually adjust them fittingly to where I'm sitting. I don't think it's bad for a dorm-studio. (;
Look at the rest of the pictures for a better idea of what's going on.
Your desk and equipment aren't gonna help you win this comp, so if your desktop isn't too much to look at, simply do something about it or don't enter?
Hey hey hey. Aren't you antsy. I don't feel the need to 'do anything about' my desktop which is just fine, nor do I expect to win this compo. As I stated in my post, I was just sharing. Please get off my back
