Because if he wants to put text over a background, the anti-alias messes with it.
To call it an ugly effect though is pretty dumb, it's just an unwanted effect for now. Thats why Graphics Gale and Photoshop are both great editors. I prefer Photoshop, but that's only because I have it. I'm sure people don't want to spend money on it, if theres something free.
