This is gonna be hard! How in the world do you create an epic game in two weeks?
Well, I guess it's just to dig out all your old epic visions and get started!
Good luck to y'all!
Apparently, whoever judged my game didn't like it. Not that I blame them, it was a piece of crap. But I think that people who say, "FAIL" in their reviews the way they did should not be judges. Judges should be more neutral than that. More like, "Low score. Here's the reasons why-- voila."
Anywho, I'm glad I'm off this round, cause I'm going to camp! See ya'll latah!
(Don't forget to download the BOM demo in my sig! )
Ah, by the way, RGBeat has problems on computers that can't run it at 60fps, it seems - it has trouble on my laptop while on my desktop it's on beat. That might explain why it is offbeat for a lot of people.

I know, I was a little bit disappointed with those scores. I might end up doing all the judging myself.

I did. If you feel a score is unfair then I'd much rather you send me a PM directly and we'll handle things without needing to cause public argument.

So what... i can't realise why would anyone as a judge wrote crab 20 times in a row, unless he's bothered by the idiocracy of the guy who made the game. I do not swear if I don't have to. But the problem is that no one really listen to you if u don't. So it might be considered as wanting to get some attention. And that was the sole intention. Because i wouldn't like seeing you reading a review about your game in such a matter that someone is repeating how awfully u did something. Even if u are avare of it or not. I am not saying that the intention of the judge maybe was different from the result of it. But I think we should stay proffesionall on this subject. If someone is not, why should I be. The purpose of commenting on someone's game is to tell him of the mistakes he's done in a way that doesn't inculde insults.
Sry for my english.

Resolved. If anyone else on any round has a problem with a score, feel free to DC mail me.
I will try to handle this scores more professionally, especially now when the dropout have pretty much dropped out already, and the scores matter more. It's my first time professionally judging any game really, let alone 10-20 each round, so it's been a little rough. Thanks for your understanding.
ANYWAYS I thought I'd let you all know that the filesize limit for this round is 25MB.

Oh noes.. the .zip containing all the games will be even more unbearably large to download! BTW I noticed the originality score field is gone completely. Will we lose points for ripping gfx / sound / music / whatever else? Especially since the other fields are only really based on graphics, technical, sound etc, will these scores just magically drop if you steal material?
On another note:
In theory somebody could just submit someone else's game, or even a non-klik game since you don't take source code. I think it would be wise to include a required splash screen or bit of text to say that the game is made for "Tourey" competition or the likes. Not that I distrust anyone, just helps improve the integrity of the competition.
Don't be so hard on yourself, Peblo, you're doing a great job with judging and scoring all of these games! I know i wouldn't wanna do it, and i'm sure there are plenty of us on here who also wouldn't. This Tourey is great and we defo should have another one!

Those scores will not be docked for ripped material if the material is suited to the game and in a creative manner. Those categories scores reflect the apparent skill level of graphics you put into the game. So, ripped material doesn't count against or for you if it's done properly. If your game is totally ripped, you'd receive 0 points. Does that make sense?
A splash screen will be a good idea. I won't make it mandatory this round since I've already posted the rules, but next round.
Oh, and thanks for the support! This was definitely more work than I was planning, but it's turning out to be well worth it. Depending on the circumstances next year, there'll be another tourey.

I'm pretty scared Bibin. Though the fact that you didn't think of asking to cooperate with me before starting, and you saying it's a good game, makes me wanne try harder to beat you. So beware!! epic
I've been gone for a few days, but I just wanted to say that you have been a very good judge imo. I've read all gradings and I believe you have been both professional and fair.
And yes! This round is evil! Epic Evil! It's EVIC!
Is it just me, or does anyone else think that everyone is just going to duel? You could probably get an easy win
if you teamed up with your partner.. since you are in all likelihood going to stand unopposed, or only against
one other team or so. Also, instead of assigning the free win to a random contestant, why not give it to the person
who made the game with the highest score from the week before? If two people made the best game, then you could just
randomly pick one of them. That will help prevent the better contestants eliminating each other early, and keeps the
competition strong. It's up to you of course.

I did think of doing it that way. The thing is, I'm trying to keep things completely randomized so as to keep things fair. If the higher skilled person is skilled enough to get a win, then they're probably skilled enough to get a win again in the next round. I think I favor the top places enough 1st-3rd place prizes. You're free to convince me otherwise though.
"Isn't it always amazing how we characterize a person's intelligence by how closely their thinking matches ours?"

Well of course I don't really mind if you leave things the way they are. I might get a free win after all. However, the principle I was suggesting is similar to that of seeding players in knockout tournaments- you naturally put the best two players at opposite sides of the draw, so that they don't have to vs. each other straight up. Say for example you have four entrants, A and B are super pro, and C and D are complete noobs. If A was (stupidly) pitted against B first round, and C against D, then say B gets eliminated, but C gets through. Then C loses to A in the final. That way C came 2nd, stealing the glory from B, who is actually far more skilled.
That is just the principle of course, it's difficult to know who is best in this competition, especially when people submit "default win" games (intentionally weak entries). If you did a system where good players tend to be matched against weaker players, there would be good incentive to make a decent game every round. Since this is a little tricky to implement, it would be easy to at least give the free win to the best player. Since we've already completed a few rounds its a little late for a rule change, but of course it is in your power to do as you choose.
This is a great competition by the way I like the way it is inspiring me to actually finish games. I usually just have half finished crap scattered everywhere.

The way the competition now safeguards against good players knocking each other out is that you have to lose twice. I pit players with similar loss-win records with each other, so if you lose twice, you not only lost to a skilled klikker, but to someone who's ALSO lost at least once. The weak entries weed themselves out in a couple of rounds, and if they keep winning rounds, they will eventually end up in the upper brackets and be forced to enter decent entries or else they will lose.

Pretty good, I guess... Hopefully by the end of today I'll have the engine for pretty everything sorted out. But I have 6 groups, I wonder if I'm over doing it.......
Making an epic game in 2 weeks is hard, because part of what makes it feel epic is if you get the idea alot of work went into it. It has to feel like you're actually entering another world when you play. How mr God pulled it off in 7 days is a mystery to me
Do you think Peblo would notice if I just send him the link to Eternal Daughter??

You wouldn't get a very good score, I hated that game.
And you know... you can continue the games on to next round if you get a really good start as long as it fits the next set of rules as well.

Seems like you've fallen for the same trap I did. It's annoying because I've been sacrificing assignment time to work on this game, and I actually think it looks alright now, but there's not much story in it.. which is the important part for this round! But then again, if your game was 100% story and no actual gameplay, you'd get 0/30 for the gameplay score section. So I guess it is important to balance it after all.
Agh. I'm having difficulties! I started a waaaay to ambitious project for this, so I'm forced to start anew. It will be a challenge! An EPIC challenge...
i guess u actually r doing something, i v been having some sort of a mental blockdown, since i have started 2 projects both i didnt like, then figured that i should work on gasei for more, then i just stoped. So if I actually do anything by the deadline it will be epic just to think bout it.
hey peblo.. If me and Bibin both make a good game, and score above 70 points or so. And there are two guys that don't turn in a game, could we maybe both get a win?
I think it would be the worst idea possible to subjectively alter rules like that. The rules are very clear and should stay like that. Besides, neither you nor Bibin can get eliminated this round.
And don't you worry Peblo! I'm sure there will be quite a few submissions! I'm entering at least, with E.P.I.C COMMANDOS!!!

I shouldn't change the rules in the middle of a round, and I'm not sure if I should be changing them for the entire tourey at all. At least you guys will be in the competition regardless of who wins this round, right?
"Isn't it always amazing how we characterize a person's intelligence by how closely their thinking matches ours?"
~Belgarath
See, this is why i can't understand people who wanna drop out now - everyone is starting to struggle, it's a war of attrition! And that's why Tourey is one of the greatest compos i've ever seen! To have so many people start, each with 2 lives, and see that only a few are still sctively in it is awesome!
The winner of this compo so deserves it, and hats off to whoever it is!
Ok. I wasnt really looking to change the rules. It's just that I don't remember there being a rule about 2 people not turning in a game. But come to think of it, they would probably be concidered a team and both get a loss, right?
Unless they are both in the grand final against each other. I think the match would be re-held
But on a more serious note- how long (how many hours) until the due date for submission? Also is that
Tourey site going up anytime soon? Did the mailing list ever eventuate?
There is 11 hours left, not that you'd know when I posted this anyway though!
And on that matter, there is bound to be problems with the submissions tonight since TDC is acting up occassionally. It'd be quite awful if someone got a loss because he/she was unable to send you a dc-mail. Maybe you can take that into account tonight Peblo?
I had a thought, will you be doing the judging alone this round?
Don't know how it was the first round, but last round there were a few
complaints about the judging, so how will you do this one?
Out of what I've seen so far, and is a vain attempt at modesty, I think Eternal Entertainment's was the best and most polished, albeit short, Don Luciano's the best drawn, mine the best programmed (or at least complicated), and bibins, well, the cutest
It's a shame that I couldn't really enjoy yours because of lag I suppose. Periodically it'd run smooth, but most of the time the letters "got the shakes" and a creepy jumble of lagging weaponry messed up my ears. But besides that, amazing engine! I'd love to see the one you have posted screenshots for, the one with the ninja crates.
And Don Luciano, I tried to switch to high gfx, but it crashed on me!
Xrat: It was a really good concept! The bouncing off of walls was quite frustrating though, and you should explain somewhere that r restarts, took me quite a few tries before I realized it.
Jon: I beat it, but it told me I was vegetablized(maybe?)... or sumthin...
I happen to know that Borgi's game is awesome, so Borgi, POST IT!
you know it turned out the "Load image into overlay" command is what consumed so much resources, so I just made a few active picture objects to serve as preloaded buffers and pasted them into the overlays at command and BAM, 50 FPS. I would have figured it was the fact I was slicing each image into like 100 pieces
And Don Luciano, I tried to switch to high gfx, but it crashed on me!
I don't know why, it works perfectly for me, except that fps drops to 30-40.
It doesn't do much, it only creates an opacity circle object, but it's rather big, bout 2000 in resoulution.
Yeah, it's just probably to much for my laptop. Oh, and another thing, I tried after I died, maybe that messed up some code or something?
Anyways, really nice one! I just loved the menus!
arrow keys to move r to restart in each level except the last your goal is to get to the
stairs that lead to the next level there are 15 or 16 levels and 3 bosses the starting levels are more puzzle based middle are more action based and final quickness based
that's a demo of the game I entered. I just added a project page, since I too am gonne continue the game after this round.
I really liked that commando game too, eternal. Good job!
Thanks!
I have tried your supercute game several times now, but I keep dying at the evil green jumping blobs a bit into the second level, and when I do, I have to view the intro, play through the tutorial, watch the scene once more before I get to try it again! In the first screen it says "press 2 to jump to level 2", but it doesn't work!

Ha! It was actually really appealing! I loved that he looked all grumpy and held his hands behind his back! That was nice, but you ought to try and slow his walking animation a bit, it's too fast imo. Hope you continue it!
Give it a go if you like, though it won't last long! It's about a 2.5mb download, zip file,
cncs232.dll included. Arrow keys to move, shift jumps, enter combines items, backspace discards
your current weapon and control to attack. Normal difficulty lets you lose a lot of magic when
you get hurt (instead of a life), whereas hard will always take away a life.
Some scores were WAY too close. This was a evenly matched round! Expect it to be like this next round too... Same disclaimer, if you have a objection to a score, DC mail me and we'll work something out.
If you guys look at the first post in this thread, all the category scores add up to 85. So add 15 to your score to get your real numbers... I guess. Otherwise your score is out of /85 instead of /100.
ANYWAYS I've had about 16 cups of coffee and I've been driving all day so I will have the new stuff up tomorrow... night guys, thanks for your patience!

Thanks for the scores Peblo. I can't believe I came so close to Don's score (4 points difference!) Thought I was gonna be way off. Also you can't really just add 15 points to make your "real" score, you just divide by 85 and multiply by 100 right? Either way it still looks like the average scores are quite low, despite the games improving in quality. Are you being more critical as time goes on, or was it just the particular theme / category that produced this set of scores?
Also another thing that strikes me as odd is the idea of continuing a game (which I'd like to do), but getting a new partner. The fact that you can continue a game almost discourages you from working with your partner, because whose game would you continue? If one is clearly better than the other, then if you decided to share the good game it would mean the other person would now have part ownership of a better game than they can make themselves, which they could then continue working on in subsequent rounds. Would you want your future opponent to have more than half of their work done for them, by you?
Heh, i can't believe only mitch had better score than me this round. And i can't play his game. Mitch could u make a version that doesn't go fullscreen? My monitor goes beserk on small resoultions. ??
Those were indeed interesting scores!
And does everyone think it takes too long to hack/destroy things?
I want round 4! I want round 4!
*shivers* ...I can't imagine how I will be when the Tourey's over...
By the time the Tourey ends, it will be nearly time to start working on the Christmas compo And there is a very good chance of this competition appearing again next year from what Peblo has said so far. With attention from Clickteam already, it could even become bigger and better next time, with more sponsorship and support to ease the burden off Peblo a bit. I feel bad cause he is putting lots of time and money into this.. but on the upside there's lots of cool games coming out of it
