One nice trick for breaking up the monotony of repetitive tiles that look badly like you have there, is to throw in some backdrops throughout it, randomly spaced. You have those 12x12 tiles or whatever they are, and you can't really make them look good, since theres only 144 total pixels to change, so they'll always look like 12x12 tiles. Yet, if you created some widgets or nooks crannies bumps or potholes, and interspersed them into the areas where you have alot of 'blankspace' tiles, it breaks up the players vision of it being a single repetitive tile. Just little backdrops that don't stick out on their own.

It looks pretty cool, but don't leave any counters or strings as default. The string in the top right should probably be changed from its original font and the counter in the bottom left might look more appealing if it wasn't a gradient.
