I'm using the sound recorder that comes with Windows XP and It's pretty cheap sounding. Does it have to do with the microphone? Or just better software? Any help will be appreciated! Will work for pencils and sharpie markers.
OMC What a goofball Registered 21/05/2007 Points 3516	12th December, 2008 at 16:04:17 - Well, I use Windows XP's sound recorder for quick stuff. It's actually a very neat little note and music recorder when I'm in a hurry. Sounds quality is your mic, not the software. I also use NCH's free Wavepad editor for other stuff, though. It lets you record longer than 60 seconds at a time, you can speed up and slow down the recording and change pitch separately, unlike in XP's recorder. You can, to a degree, cut noise and optimize the audio, and it allows for fading, cross-fading, whatever. There are a few features that I think require the full version, but for the most part you won't need them. Also, I've heard good things about Audacity. Edited by OMC

It's probably your mic quality, but with Cool Edit you can add special effects, mix sounds, and save the recordings as several types of files. I know with sound recorder you can only save them as .wav and the file sizes are big.

Just record, go to File>Properties, click Convert Now, choose Mpeg Layer-3 in the Format box, and save.
