I can't understand why anyone would write a database driven website in ASP (especially not with an Access database since you are limited to about 25 concurrent connections). Not only that, normally you need windows based hosting to use it (unless you're clever and can install asp on mono or something), which is traditionally more expensive than linux based hosting solutions. I know I wouldn't choose a language with limitations that cost you.
there are many advocators of this site needing a php overhaul. myself included.
the fact is none of the coders have the time to do it. id do it but i dont have the time or energy to do it, let alone the access to the sites resources.
this site was written years ago. so the decision may have favored asp for some reason. i dunno. or maybe thats just what they knew how to do at the time. no php knowledge.
The site began before php was mature enough to be used in a production environment without dieing on its ass, the arcade however is being written in php
Well I would say php was fine since 2001, and I wonder how much code has changed since then? I would guess that quite a lot of it has changed. If it works then of course there's no point in changing it plus you have years of testing, I am just intrigued by how much revision a site can have when it's based on inferior (and expensive) technology.
actually around 2001 php was still pretty under developed or otherwise crap, with service providers over-charging its web services as a added bonus. Since at the time "interactive websites" was something new at the time and the fact that we were able to build it and build upon the code in the first place was huge for a bunch of people with no money.
Yes the code is out-dated now but and this is stage the site is working pretty darn good still. Sure you can start from scratch and buy yourself a nice electric train but why do that when your classic steam-locomotive is still happily puffing away!
On the flip side we are not a bunch of idiots we know asp is going to fade away but time is something we dont have and money is something that spits in our faces (and then runs away laughing)
That being said the upcoming brand new "Arcade" is written in php and is getting its database info from the current dc database, its fast and works. So as we continue on in the future I think you will see the site being upgrade "part by part" during a period of years. But there is really no rush since the site is humming along just fine for now.
We all have lives this is "and I am sad to say" not a commercial site that is making money that can hire Clubsoft as a coder and myself as a editor (that would be a good dream however So for now this is all done ins our very little spare time that we have but I still think we are doing just fine. (can you imagine what could be done if we could really put some good time into this, its mind blowing
Phew, k i think my bagel is burned around now, lol

Yeah things are running just fine. The odd bug here or there but nothing major (I had an error when trying to manage the icons that appear by my name) and the site is looking better than it ever has done.
"The site began before php was mature enough to be used in a production environment without dieing on its ass, the arcade however is being written in php"
and theres the very good reason why the decision was made.

thats actually my idea of how to convert the site. over time. a section can be rewritten in php and still be a part of the collective site. over time each section can be rewritten.
