I know this question has probably asked a million times but where is a good place to find sound effects? Specifically for a platformer. Any help is appreciated.

Google, and you can get 5 free from soundsnap. Used to be all free but unfortunately they decided to be gumfarts and make you pay. Audacity is good for editing things, but for recording you can use windows' plain old included recorder. I also prefer NCH's Wavepad to Audacity, for interface reasons.

SFXR is a nifty little program. It's useful for generating really retro sounds using sine, square or sawtooth waves, or a noise channel if that's the feel you want from your sound effects. I personally like it but I've heard others criticise it. Can't remember why now...

Here's the link anyway:

It's very limited, that's why. It's good for retro, but that's it.

Thats a lot of choices guys. Thanks a lot. I might use that retro one. Seems pretty cool.

Edit: I starting using that retro one and it saves it as a .sfs and Multimedia Fusion 2 doesn't accept its format for some reason.

sfxr is good for making the initial wave. you can use other software to add wavs together, mutate them, etc. but otherwise its just 8 and 16 bit retro sounds.

Lately I've been using Sounddogs.com, they have a rathe large selection of sounds, some of which are free. The good thing is, the ones that cost money offer a portion of the sound effect that you can download for free. For example, I just needed a quick footstep noise, so I searched footsteps and found a clip of someone walking, then I saved the free sample which had about 5 steps in it and chose the best one through audacity.

For Sam I made most of the sounds using just a mic and some creativity in Audacity .

For Tormi I just use Freesound for the real stuff (ambience etc) and SFXR for sounds. All edited in Audacity to balance sound levels and tweaking.

I've always meant to have a chat to you about the sound effects in Tormishire. I think sfxr is way too much retro. You're not making a NES game.

Sfxr is fine for a lot of stuff. Random stuff gets you "retro" sound effects. Or more accurately, the old games used random beeps as an excuse to have sounds

Heh, after I finish my thesis, I'm going to look into creating a better sound effect generator. Might not be free, though, would cost around $10 or $5 if it's not bad
