I've played a couple of decent games and used a few really good apps recently. I was pleasantly surprised by a game called Trace, and another game called Eliss. Also, CatchaMouse and Klikmaster's Hurdler have taken up a good bit of my time, too. I use a couple of other applications for Japanese study, another another to remind me of birthdays. Any other recommendations?

I almost made a similar topic when my brother and I bought an iPod Touch last week. So far I've been using AirVideo, which streams movies from your computer so you can save space. My brother likes LightBike a lot and I find FS5 Hockey (something like that. It's an air hockey game) to be a nice little diversion that even my mum played once. She doesn't touch video games. Also Google Earth is spiffo.

I'd like to make my own, but I don't have the time, energy, patience, or friend to learn Objective C right now. Guess I'll wait for the MMF2 runtime.

Looking forward to others' recommendations so I can waste some more time... I'll have to try the ones you mentioned.

I don't personally have one, but my girlfriend owns one and she has a LOT of applications on it. There's a few tower defence games for it, a mate of mine likes the fishing one where you flick the whole iPod to cast your line, I dunno.. I heard there was a rhythm game made for it, too.

I myself have an iPod Classic 160GB (now discontinued, only comes in 80/120gb now) just because of its practicality of hard-drive space. And Touchs only come up to like 16GB? or 32GB? The touch screen kicks ass and all that, but doesn't persuade me enough to get one until they release one with some fat space. (25gb of music on the iPod and it's not even my entire computer library)

Ah, I always get Klikmaster and KNPmaster mixed up. Sorry about that

Thanks for the tip, OMC. I'll give AirVideo a try.

Is it true that you need a Mac to develop iPhone games? Unity might be able to do it, but I haven't had time to check it out.

jthongbai - yea, the iPod touch only goes up to 32gb. It fills up pretty quickly if you have a lot of music and videos especially. You can choose which playlists to sync to the iPod. So if you're pedantic about organising your songs and actually rate them (eh, like I do), then you can only sync 4 star songs and above. Same for movies, etc.

If that's not enough space you can use one of the many media streaming apps. (Which reminds me, Apple's Remote app for controlling your computer's iTunes library is cool, as well as RemotePad, which lets you use the screen as a touchpad.)

There are one or two IDE's that support iPhone dev, I think, but the official and best way so far is to use XCode. My bro has a Mac so I could do it if I wanted, but learning a language is something I'd prefer someone taught me. I think I've learned quite enough about computers to have earned the right to want people to teach me from now on!

EDIT: Actually, Dr. James, I was excited about playing games when we got it, but I've kind of been disappointed in that area so far and have been enjoying the utilities far more.

Yea I prefer my 80gb 5.5G iPod for a music and video player and it'll stay that way until the iPhone gets 128gb.

Heh, same here. Now I'm more interested in where the machine will go next using the new sensors in the 3GS. I've seen a few rendered tech demos that could potentially happen on the 3GS (like that walking cat one). Just like with the consoles everyone wants funky new input methods.

I almost called it an iTouch as well, but then I realized it would be nitpicked.

Apple should just drop the pod and call it the iTouch. It's much easier. Unless they've got the name reserved for a tablet...

I'm glad you didn't because that's not what it's called! Just saying is all, if you spend any time on the mac forums and hear the kids all calling it a iTouch when there are at least 2 products out there with that name, but then again people with full blown keyboards still type in TXT SPK.

ensodot (thanks Cecil) is like a perfect little game for the iPod Touch / iPhone for me. I don't really get into long games on portable devices that weren't designed just to play games, and especially not when you have to run your finger all over the screen to move characters etc. Small "coffee break" games are perfect for me. That's why I like CatchaMouse so much. Edge is a great game too. Rastamonkey definitely looks like a game you'd like, Adam

yeah i spend most of my time on the app store in games->puzzle. they really need more good puzzle games and games that utilize the device properly. not games that try to be normal games using the devices input devices awkwardly.

My friend has an iPhone and he's trying to convince me Splotches would be awesome on the iPhone. Problem is he hasn't played the game so he's visualizing shaking the iPhone or something to spread them. O_o And the screen isn't large enough for the entire grid.

Found a color mixing game called Dapple and about died of sadness, but then downloaded it and was relieved to find that it was super awful compared to the Splotches gameplay.

Haha, "Torch"! I don't have an iPhone/iTouch or whatever (i'm obviously too old to be cool lol) but i do use my LG phone as a torch by just illuminating the screen after unlocking the touch-screen. Works a treat too, and it didn't cost me 59p!

They are full of some anal folk. It's funny but outside of Mac forums I find myself defending them, but on the Mac forums I find myself defending Windows. Mac laptop, home built Windows desktop is all I want.

There is definitely a balance to be struck. Though I myself can't stand OSX and any Apple product or marketing campaign other than the iPod, (OSX's interface thrives on loyalty alone--there's nothing revolutionary or more sophisticated about it. All hype.) I completely respect those who do...

As long as they don't act like turds.

Oh I don't know about that. I use both systems daily but OSX is lightning fast at navigation (mostly down to Expose, Smartfolders, the dock, Coverflow and Spotlight) and the seperate window look is great when working with lots of apps at once. I just wish the bugger had native support for address bars in Finder. And they must be doing something right for Win7 to have a hybrid of OSX and the taskbar UI design from Windows. Which could be very good (not tried Win7 yet ).

Heh. The mac forum people say the same thing about Windows too, about how the UI is slow and non-intuitive. Just goes to show it's all down to what you previously know

And no not really. I don't like the iPod Touch, it's just an iPhones poorer cousin so I'm hardly a fan of it.

I've used OSX's interface now for quite a while now, and it's definitely more clunky. And it's not just file navigation, menus and button configurations are awful. The whole having-to-use-expose is nuts, and the inconsistency between programs leaving icons and not leaving icons in the dock is annoying. The entire icon system on the dock is preposterous. I also hate having to go up to the top menu to exit out rather than just hit the x on the window, since that leaves it running. Random limitations in the UI are also absurd, like having to use the terminal to hide and unhide folders.

There are a host of things I hate about it, and I could probably go on and on about why else I think Macs are stupid, but I'm not being forced to use them so it doesn't really matter. Even if I were it hardly warrants an argument. Just saying I do have reasons behind my loathing for it.

And you know it's not even so much OSX. Both systems get the job done and it's down to personal preference. What really bugs me is the attitude surrounding OSX. Not everyone acts like it, but a lot of people think Windows is primitive simply because that's what they've been told. There isn't really anything revolutionary about OSX. Both windows and OSX are on par in sophistication, it's just that since so many people use Windows it gets targeted for malware more. The whole uppity feeling Apple sends me is off-putting. You could say the same of a lot of Windows users, but that's a personal choice rather than a bandwagon thing.

Lol, my uncle touts the virtues of OSX to me every chance he gets, ("Switch to mac, you'll never go back") and I play along, but then I start talking about computers and mildly technical stuff and he gets so confused. It cracks me up.

EDIT: Upon reflection, this long post makes it look like I care more about this than I do. I'll put a cork in it.

Well I'll explain the app anyway. It's a jailbroken app and you can pretty much download any app from the appstore for free (even the one's that your supposed to pay for ) That's where I get all my apps

Did you know: There's an app on the appstore called "iRa" that's $900!

Okay guys, a friend and I made an app called iLocker that lets you send movie, audio, text, powerpoint, or excel files (text can even be edited) from your computer to your iPhone/iPod Touch, and lets you protect them with a 3-digit passcode. Give it a try, it's just 99 cents!

Please, please, I beg of you to buy my apps - my dev hardware really needs funding right now, so if you buy any of them and like them then do please consider showing them to your friends.

Apps: Tilt! ColorPicker, ForeCast, iLocker!

There are two kinds of us mac people. The Mac Dicks, coined by Adiblasi, are the people you mention. The other group consists of computer users who happen to run some Apple hardware, and does not need to be exclusively this.

I couldn't agree more.

Heh. Reminds me of this:

One thing PC users can do that Mac users can't

Please, please, I beg of you to buy my apps - my dev hardware really needs funding right now, so if you buy any of them and like them then do please consider showing them to your friends.

Apps: Tilt! ColorPicker, ForeCast, iLocker!

I'll support you Bibin. Actually iLocker sounds very useful indeed. I'll check out the other ones, too. Just out of interest, how much of that 99 cents does the developer get?

Bibin, should I be looking at the apps by Nick Lee? Just checking. Also, I couldn't find ForeCast.
I want to buy WordCraft but it's "not available in the iTunes UK store". ffffffsdjfia

Yes, technically my friend Nick is the one who registered the account as we develop together.

We get 70% of the sale price, and then that's divided in half as Nick and I share the income for this for the apps we both work on. So, I get 35 cents for each time you buy it.

...It's not that bad...

Just released in Japan: http://www.i-fukkin.com/

It's actually quite novel. Shame about the name because I think it's a genuine mistake

(fukkin - "fookkeen" - means abdominal muscles in Japanese)

No Wolfenstein RPG on that list! For SHAME!

Also, the most recent gameloft stuff is quite good (Blades of Fury, Modern Combat)
