Anyone had a go at using Mugen before? I've been looking at some people's Mortal Kombat fan-games on Youtube and they look impressive; i just wondered what people who've used it or seen it thought?
It's ancient I actually liked it, but never really got into it because it's inferior to most brawlers and isn't that balanced when you download guys to play in it. It's still quite enjoyable as a free game.

It's old as, I used to used the 95 build but then everyone got into 2001 and then the really new one just ruined it all. But it used to be a lot of fun, messing around with making characters and editing peoples characters.
I tried to get into it again maybe a year or two ago for the hell of it, but it's very hard to find all the components for the build that you want to run.
Muz, you say you download guys to play it - does this mean it's just a "set" engine you just customize the characters with? How does it work and how much freedom does it give you to make a fighting game you want?
I checked Mugen out a while back. Took a lot of hunting to find the character I was looking for.
I'm not one for fighting games like that, really. They bore me quickly and more often than not they frustrate me with an AI who can get so many combos that you're just sitting there, unable to block or counterattack. -__-;;
Yes, when it was still running strong with Elecbyte, you downloaded the build you wanted from their site and it came with one stage, a dojo, and one character, Kung Fu Man. You needed to add all the characters in yourself, many people made rips from other Capcom/SNK/whatever games and stages. All the interface could be customized too, and the character selection screen/menu.

You just well.. download guys. There are plenty of sites with Mugen characters. You could do animations and skills and stuff. It gives a decent amount of freedom - special effects, combos.. slightly less flexibility than doing it with MMF, but a heck lot easier.

I used to be crazy for MUGEN. I had a character roster of around 300 and had the EVE theme installed. I never used it to create a real full game, just used it to have ridiculous characters fight each other. But it's still good fun
That game looks amazing!
I tried using this before, I thought it was hard to figure everything out.
But I only spent a couple days toying around with it..
By the lokos of that video, it can make some prety impressive stuff.
Your just jealous that you're not as awesome as me.
(And my megaman avatar )
I'll probably try Mugen one of these days.
I'm curious how easy it is to make fighting games with.
Is there a scripting language for it or what?
Just exactly how customizable can it be anyway?
Blood of the Ancient One, Seen only as Shadow, Faster than Lightning, Fierce as the Greatest Dragon, Nearly Invisible, Floating in a Dream, Entered through the Demon Door, Destroyer of Evil in a Realm with a Red Sky Scarred, Who could I be ?
Mugen what a GreatIdea it was ,
Back in the dos version, I understood quite a lot of what to do,
now-a-days with it being windows, its a much more slick programming environment,
I looked it up again about 5 months ago,
and if your going to use it
Find "Fighters Factory"
its a freebe editor for mugen fighters, and I think Background stages, and intros and virtually everything.. also... it allows you to check out other sprite files as it loads the sff straight into he editor..

Mugen is made in C language, it's pretty hard but my bro did a great mugen long time ago, the real creator of mugen is the genius because the others is just changing sprites and adding more functionalities and remove bugs
I found making your own characters to be insanely complicated, but that was a few years ago. i LOVE mugen though. such a great game, and a wonderful idea
[Game design makes my brain feel like its gonna explode.]
Like a few ppl in this post,
I used Mugen Way back in the DOS version, and also now in the windows version,
and Just everything seems difficult,
you the engine is really really good, they added support for extra sprites that follow the players,
(Like Duck King from RBS)
and there is death moves, somehow, and I read a post on a forum, about adding a Morph like Move to the players, like Shang Tsung from MK2
I did find a program that could create all aspects of the game, Called FighterFactory, look that up, it seems alien to me, but I did figure out that it can save sprites out of already created ones, and also sounds and stuff.
