I used to be a sucker for these when they first came out on PS1, though to be honest i was never very good. I gave up when i played (and sucked!) on an arcade version once in Hereford, then an 8 year old girl (who'd been watching) got on and totally handed my ass to me on a plate in front of everyone.
That was the last time i was gonna let that happen!!
I never really enjoyed bemani games. I find it to be one of the least interesting type of games. They do impress people in a social environment though (such as an arcade).
I only ever got semi good at one song on Dancing Stage [I think] though so I was pretty awful and got my ass handed to me several times. Such is life as a noob though
I remember enjoying them at youth group events. Haven't played DDR in so long though, that I've probably lost what little skills I had. That fad kinda passed (here, at least) when Guitar Hero hit the scene. Time for a comeback?
Alistair what bemani games have you played? I'm not a big fan of konami, but DDR (before supernova 2), pop'n music (amazing game), and possibly beatmania are mad fun.
In the Groove 2 is so much better than ddr though. The pads are 100x better and you can make custom songs and custom charts on your pc with stepmania and bring them to the arcade on a flash drive. I'm trying to get my hands on a cabinet. I don't think I would even consider buying a ddr cab.
Only one worth a crap is a Blueshark and they are no longer made. Had to pay $600 to buy someone off of some guy in canada used. Cobalt fluxes are the alternative - I don't like them, but they are decent enough to get pretty good at the game. They still run around 300 new I think.
You should see ITG. It is much, much harder than DDR especially since you can put custom songs on it.
The top tier ITG players are at a ridiculous level of skill. Someone made a file that was 67000 steps long, 140 bpm 16ths with absolutely no breaks. 120 minutes straight and some dude got about 97% on it.
There are players that are great at 200bpm 16ths, and it gets a good bit faster than that.

No doubt. But that's exactly the thing, arcade games are of a much higher quality than console games. And to enjoy them properly, you need a good setup.
Hahaha I've seens some guys that do that at a place before. A group of about fifty people were around this one guy and everyone cheered when he got another 100 farther in his combo. His name was Dave and he was AWESOME!!!
Must be this video. He is a very good player and was the first person to ever tri-star determinator (crazy ass song) on ITG 2. This is a pretty bad score for him on infernoplex, probably due to warmup or something and distractions.
He is still very, very good and could be considered a professional. He is well known for 100%ing a song in the last round of a tournament, cheering, and not stepping off the pad causing 2 mines to register resulting in him losing the tournament .
Heres the determinator vid. Hard to see the screen, but this was the first tri-star video.
I can pass determinator, but not with a great score (85ish percent?). I would have a good score on it if there was an ITG 2 machine around here.
I may actually be getting a cabinet soon so we shall see =]/
OMG stalker! But ya. I'm pretty good friends with the guy right next to dave's head in the gray sweat shirt. Hahaha I'm just out of view in the video. Oh! If you wanna find me, I'm right next to the red head guy
I play StepMania with a RedOctane metal pad. I was really into the arcade scene for a while, but there aren't any DDR machines in decent condition where I live anymore.
You're very good, but it would be more impressive if you weren't bar-hugging.

That is one of the most annoying things you could ever say.
I can probably AA this song without the bar. I AAd Max 300 centuries ago without the bar on a really bad run, I just don't make it a point to play 10s no bar very often. I almost always no bar 9s and under, but the Bar makes for much better PA/FA so might as well use it for AAA runs. Also if you plan to play for hours straight, playing no-bar on stamina draining songs is just a waste.
There are no top tier players that play exclusively without the bar, and right now, there are only a few that are actually really damn good without it.

I didn't mean any offense by my statement. I recognize that using the bar makes for more accurate runs. It was just always frowned upon by the local scene here (Wichita, KS, USA) circa 2003-2006 when I was really into the game. Like I said, it's evident from the video that you're very good.
Props to you on the PSMO run. Bar or not, that's impressive.
I didn't really take offense, but I am going to defend something that I find to be irrational.
Most of the time the people who frown against using the bar, are terrible at the game. Every person I have ever seen complain about using the bar has supposedly been playing much longer than I, and is pretty bad at the game. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure I was better than them the first day I got a good softpad. I've played against several no bar after they ran past the machine while I was playing a 10 and using the bar that whined about me using it and wrecked them in the process ( I'm a bit competitive so this is always going to sound cocky online, sorry for that). There are some no bar vids on my profile as well and all of them are pretty good.
It is also really irritating when people say "but you used the bar" for mind-bendingly difficult songs on ITG since most of them can't even pass ITG 10s which are much easier than DDR 10s. Even the officials can get extremely hard (almost any itg 11 is much, much harder than a DDR 10 and ITG goes up to 13 for its official charts). Custom charts go up to 17 or so and 17s are in a completely different league than 13s.
Example of maybe a 15/16 custom song on itg
Don't use the bar. . .right?
As for the PSMO, I thought it was a crappy score . I've beaten it a long time ago and fced it before. I just only have time to play once every month or so now =/.
