Do we get to choose what games we think are terrible? Actually come to think of it people could easily lie in order to do a remake of something they like.

Actually, now that I think about it, I'd imagine that some issues might arise about whether or not a chosen game is "bad." So I think that as long as the sequel you create for it is better than the original in every way, then it's okay, even if the original game was actually good.
What we could probably do is judge games based on "gap" between how bad the original was and how good the remake is. So a Mega Man X fangame that actually turns out a little better than the original would receive a lower score than someone who remade E.T. for the NES into something that's actually playable and really fun.
So for bad games, your mission is to make them good. For good games, your mission is to make them AWESOME.

If this is going to happen, would someone please do The Adventures of Micro Man?
Dude... Whoa.... I totally remember that game... I had it on my old computer, it sucked! And I had some Spork the Dork or something that came with it, and a PacMan rip off called MacMan...
I'm game for this compo I think perhaps we should just grade it on how good the click game is period, and then have extra points for the comparrison stuff.

alright... here's my two bits.
I think that sounds/music should be totally free-form.
and graphics/coding need to be completely original.
however,at least around 80% of characters, power-ups, enemies, etc.
should be from the original game.(their concepts, not their sprites)
what do you think? I think that's good.

It's a shame seeing such good competition ideas fade away. Although to be honest creating a complete sequel in a short space of time might be just too much to ask.

It's not that the idea and competition died, it's just that I thought of the idea during a time in the summer when I had little time to do something about it. I would love if someone started this competition, I would do so, but I would really like to enter, not be a judge.

Haha I had the same feelings towards a competition idea I had a while back. But then again, why does it have to be a competition? If it's inspires people to make something and they enjoy doing it can't that be enough?

because 'fan games' are VERY frowned upon in this community.

Bad fan games are frowned upon. As are any bad games, really.
I'd love to see more good fangames! If they faithfully recreate the experience and maybe add something extra.

I agree with AndyUK, you should make games to make yourself happy. Sometimes I haven't made a game because this community frowns upon using ripped sprites and or making fangames.

hey, why use Ripped sprites when you could ask around and find some desperate sprite artist to make custom stuff for ya?
as for fangames, i'd say they're only frowned upon because (like you all said) all the fangames on TDC are totall failures.
I'm all for GOOD fangames though.
@MaCAdaM I think your MegaMan Avatar is cool...
