It just looks like every other FPS on those screenies now - kinda depressing.

Duke Nukem should wallow in cheeseyness and awesomeness, not try and fit in with the crowds.

Duke is still relevant, if he wasn't nobody would care about DNF.
The fact that pretty much every major gaming site/blog covered the news that gearbox were continuing the project in their frontpage shows how popular duke nuken still is after all these years.

Hail to the king, baby.

too little too late

duken nukem's idea was great when it first came out.. becasue it was fresh, and original... what's it got to say for itself now? it's just a fps with an old game idea... aliens... i mean, lots of things happened since last duken nukem... half life for example, it happened 2 times, and as more alien games came out.. the idea have been watered down a lot.. so coming back NOW with the alien fps game idea? AGAIN? sounds like its for the sake of money, they took too long, they didn't care about us, they should go to hell if you ask me

Dogzer: Duke Nukem was never about originality so how can you say the idea was great when it came out ? The first duke nukem games were almost commander keen clones, and duke nukem 3d was very much like doom, quake, and pretty much every fps that came before. In most of those, coincidently, you also killed aliens.
What really made the series stand out was the style and attitude of the game and the main character. Nobody gave a crap if DN3D looked and played like doom, it was 10 times more fun simply because it had duke nukem on it.

If gearbox manage to keep what made duke nukem 3d so awesome, then they will have a great game, at least for me.

Yes i also think it's HILARIOUS!

I can't wait for Duke, if only to see what Gearbox have done with the franchise. I was also thinking about how none of the Duke-clones have ever gained any sort of success that Duke did back in the '90's, games like Serious Sam and Postal. I think one of Duke's strengths is his play on '80's action film hero's. Also, he looks a bit like that guy from Falling Down (excellent film):

I like sport games, but I don't like quiz games, even if they are sport themed. But even if it was an actual football game, if it sucked badly it probably wouldn't have much more than 15 downloads.

ok so dukem nukem wasn't original in its 'concept', and it wasn't the first fps, what I ment is... well.. just look at it, look at the graphics, it's one of the first FPS games there were, sure it wasn't the first great FPS, but the 90s it was the new thing to try out! Those games you could shoot from the character's field of view caught us lil games by surprise! Such pleasant surprises were sure welcomed back then! Nowadays it's like.. o great... another fucking fps, one looks the same as the other... (1) for knife... (2) for pistol.. (3) for shotgun.. (4) for assault rifle .. (5) for misile launcher... (6) for grenades (7) for plasma gun... and ( for really big gun... ALL GAMES have that exact setup, ALL OF THEM, in that order and with those same gun names! and it's always about you roaming alone through maps shooting targets.

It's a safe market, and game companies are exploiting it, and guess what, even after their supreme abuse to the 'fps game formula', its working for them pretty damn well!! it's given them millions, and you know what? I'm fine by it because in their game cloning business they at least have the decency of giving it a new name and trying to push it further a little, adding fresh concepts, and i'm not talking about making (3) assault rifle and (4) shotgun, I'm talking about taking the fps formula and push it a lil further, giving it something NEW and gaining the marker with at least a small effort, even though if it's just the good'ol 'better graphics' feature. But.. gaining the market using a 15 years old game name? They had you waiting without regards of your feelings as customers, as gamers.. as HUMAN BEINGS! Calling in for those long waiting FANS they once had? Because one things for sure, that's what they're going to rely on, fan love, they won't be push the graphics or anything, they just want some quick bux, and want to squeeze profit out of a mediocre game on account of oldschool gamer loyalty, that's not cool, guys, that's not cool at all, and they won't be fooling me into thinking the good gaming times are going to come back, it's too late for that, so i'll spend my money on some other FPS that actually dares to risk it in the gaming market with something new.

I don't think they'll be looking for new fans with Duke Forever, more relying on people who were around in the '90's and remember the original when it first came out (that's me!), and probably adolescent kids who will be playing it despite being below the BBFC age rating (or whatever rating other countries have)

And i don't think this game will remain at RRP price for long either, i'm not sure it'll sell at all! Hell, if they sold it for £30 RRP i wouldn't be surprised. If they had any sense though, they'd cleverly use all the hype surrounding this "13 years in the making" game and the controversy it brings and milk it for every penny it's worth.

And (IMO), i'm glad gimicky games like this come out. Gaming is supposed to be about fun and escapism, and the Duke games fit into a niche that has been favourable to me since i started playing games. The sheer diversity of gaming genres is what makes it so interesting to me; we've got arty and stylish games, we got racers, we got shooters, we got serious games, we got funny games, we got toilet-humour games, we got everything.

And although i don't like them all, it's nice to have the choice!

Dogzer:
I'm not exactly sure I understand what you are talking about...
Duke nukem was released in 1996, the first true fpses were released in 1992/1993, by 1996 the market was flooded with what back then were known as "doom clones", so no, at that time fpses weren't the new thing to try out. Your mindset was more or less what the same as almost everyone back then, except now games are a lot more diverse than they were back then thank to the technological evolution.

You are right to some extent, companies want to make money, that's their only way of surviving and their main purpose after all, but that doesn't mean the games they make aren't going to be any good.
You are talking as if Duke Nukem is going to be a mediocre game solely judging by work-in-progress screenshots and short and low quality footage. btw I think the graphics are on par with pretty much every other fps out there, even if they are not ground breaking.

If you look at all the biggest fps releases coming in and recently released, none of them are really original and most of them if not all of them are sequels. Call of Duty:Black ops, Medal of Honor, Bioshock 2, Left4Dead 2, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and so on are the first examples that come to mind.

I'm looking for DNF precisely because I'm hopeful that it's going to be true to it's roots, which means it will be different from most fpses on the market right now. Fighting bosses four times your size, duke's one liners, the badass soundtrack, the simple but efficient guns and all that are things that you don't find in every FPS nowadays.

Have you ever played Duke Nukem 3D ? If you haven't, try it, you'll know what I'm talking about.

I don't really care for the one-liners, the misogyny, the nagging feeling that you're playing a game designed by a 12 year old. I guess we live in more enlightened times now.

But Duke 3D is essential anyway. I think it's a bigger step from the abstract level design of Doom toward modern games' "real" locales than Quake or even Quake 2 is. And it was using scripted sequences too. And it's a lot of fun. (And it has a seperate melee key.)

Shadow Warrior does this stuff even better.

you do realize that the only reason people are "interested" in the game is because everyone wants to know what its ultimate fate will be. its been in development almost 15 years, has been in the hands of numerous developers, has spanned multiple generations of console and pc hardware, and had appropriately different engines for each. god only knows how many different games it would have come out as had it actually come out.

the game it was SUPPOSED to be is not the game it WILL be. the duke nukem franchise is NOT relevant in todays market. the game itself is a joke.

hum ..while all the debacle behind the development of the game probably helped with all the hype, but do you seriously think if it wasn't a duke nukem game, all these news around the resurrection of the project would have received this much attention ?

Look at Prey for example, coincidentally also by 3D realms. It was given up and restarted god knows how many times, took 13 years to be released and went through 3 different engines and several different designers and studios, but the final result was very well received by the critics. Needless to say, it didn't receive a quarter of the attention DNF received along the years.

I think you should read the previews and articles recently made on DNF. For a joke, it's receiving a lot of praise.

Also on the Duke Nukem series not being relevant today...2K has been investing a huge lot of money on the project. They know better than anyone what makes money and what doesn't. If Duke Nukem wasn't even slightly relevant today, they would have given up on the project 10 years ago.

Heh, I like football games, but I only liked Duke Nukem when I was 11. Once I got to around 14, the narm charm of Duke Nukem wore off.

IMO, looks like another typical FPS. It's overhyped, but I'm sure someone out there will pay for it and enjoy it. More power to them.

I'm sure i'll pay for it and enjoy it, but i am expecting to enjoy it for retro-ness as much as anything else. If i was 10 years younger and hadn't grown up with it, i'd bet i wouldn't buy it.

i came in my pants- multiple times and still i am. i had lost all my hope and faith but after i READ About it and saw the screenshots I screamed out of joy. I am just REALLY excited about it and I hope the MULTIPLAYER will be good because I never care about multiplayer but DUKE online is still so much fun nowadays.

i also hope you can blow up walls- modern games LACK this feature. also if there are girls shouting "kill me" in this game the chances of gearbox releasing it in germany are just very slim lol

I am not too hyped about this game, I will try it out since I liked DN3D though.

I read this article the other day:

http://www.gamesradar.com/f/why-the-12-year-delay-has-actually-been-good-for-duke-nukem-forever/a-2010090612486464080

Seriously, check it out. This guy makes some very good points about how Duke Nukem Forever's 12-year delay has actually helped it a lot more than it would have if it was released in its original due date in the 90's.

One of the points I agree about most is how virtually all FPS's these days share similarities in the way they present their story and characters, and the majority take themselves very seriously. Duke's satirical nature would provide a refreshing break from the trend of angsty shooters like Call of Duty and Gears of War.
